Name Sgr-Muzaffarabad road as Shahrah-e-Aziz: 11th August Foundation

Srinagar : Various political parties cutting across ideological lines have hailed the commencement of cross LoC trade between Srinagar and Muzaffarabad, describing it a welcome development.

The truck service for trade across the LoC on the Srinagar-Muzzafarabad road was started on Tuesday.Welcoming the opening of trade route, the  11th August Foundation stressed the need for taking other confidence building measures that would pave way for final settlement of Kashmir issue.

APHC, clarified that neither peace could be restored in the subcontinent nor there would be any progress in the trade unless and until meaningful and result-oriented steps were taken to resolve Kashmir issue.

“Hurriyat hopes that Pakistan will take this development as confidence building measure and there is a need for taking several other confidence building measures that will pave way for final resolution of Kashmir issue,” said a spokesman of the Hurriyat in a statement today.

Democratic Freedom Party (DFP) acting chairman Moulana Muhamamd Abdullah Tari, while hailing the restoration of trade, described it a welcome step towards resolving 60 year old Kashmir dispute.

Expressing happiness over the commencement of trade, the National Conference general secretary Sheikh Nazir Ahmad said,”It has lent this day, October 21, a historical significance.” He said it would have a positive impact on the economy of the people on both sides and would pave way for resolution of political issue of Jammu and Kashmir.

Abdul Rashid Ghazi of People's league

Front ranking pro-freedom organisation the Jammu and Kashmir People's League leader Abdul Rashid Ghazi who was mysteriously found dead on Thursday in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district may have died due to torture, post mortem has revealed.

Reliable sources said that Rashid was been beaten to death by some unknown persons as his head was bleeding profusely. “It is a clear case of murder, not an accident.”

They said the deceased was returning from Islamabad after attending the condolence meeting of Party Chairman Mukhatar Ahmad Waza’s mother.

According to People’s League members, Rashid didn’t die by accident but has been murdered. “There is no question of accident, we have received postmortem report and it shows death due to torture.”
Rashid was taken to government hospital Baramulla where his postmortem was conducted around 12 pm, sources said.

A senior doctor from Baramulla hospital wishing anonymity said the deceased has died most probably due to torture as there are visible marks all over his body and abrasion on both knees. “The deceased has suffered grave head injury on the posterior side of right central bone in his head which leads to cardio reparatory arrest resulting in on-spot death,” the doctor said.

Chairman, Peoples League, Mukhtar Ahmed Waza said India has adopted unique way to kill innocent Kashmiris from 6-year-old to 70-year-old. “We don’t need state probe into the killing. As there are countless probes ordered which are altered according to their needs. We demand international agencies to conduct a probe into the innocent killing of Abdul Rashid Ghazi,” Waza said.

He said Ghazi was supporting the resistance movement from 1965 and has worked on various facades. “He has been murdered in a well-planned manner to crush the ongoing movement,” Mukhtar added.

A police spokesperson said we are ascertaining the facts into the mysterious death. “We have registered a case under 174 CrPc and investigation is on.”

He said we have shifted body to the hospital where postmortem was conducted. “One mark of injury has been found on the head.”

According to initial investigations, the circumstantial evidences of the spot suggest that it is a hit and run road accidental case. However police has taken the cognizance,” the spokesperson added.
Meanwhile, Peoples League General Secretary Muhammad Ashraf Vaid has demanded a judicial probe into the mysterious death of party’s senior leader.

On August 11, 2008, Chairman of Jammu Kashmir People's League, Sheikh Abdul Aziz was killed by army while he was leading a peaceful public demonstration against the “economic blockade” in the infamous Amarnath Shrine agitation which witnessed 68 innocent killings across Valley.

Third Front in Offing in the off-stream camp

SRINAGAR: In a significant development that could shake the political skeletons of Pro-freedom politics in the state of Jammu & Kashmir, Kashmir Media Watch through its reliable sources has learnt that most probably a Third Front’ of pro-freedom camp is quite high on agenda in the off-stream political heads and is likely going to be actualised soon reports Kashmir Media Watch.

Pertinently, these developments come at a time when one of the main factions of Hurriyat (Hurriyat M) is witnessing tremendous internal strife after the controversial statement of Professor Abdul Gani Bhat with reference to United Nations Resolution and its contemporary relevance and applicability to the Kashmir imbroglio.

Kashmir Media Watch has also received inputs that prominent pro-freedom leaders like Azam Inquilabi, Shabir Ahmad Shah, Engineer Hilal Ahmad War, Nayeem Ahmad Khan, Javid Ahmad Mir, Hakeem Rashid, Mohammad Yousuf Naqash et al are going to be the prominent faces of the said ‘Third Front’.

It is to be reminded here that for quiet sometime now, there have been quite hectic political to float a pro-freedom Third Front in Jammu and Kashmir which as per the analysts is a consequence of the inertias of the two Hurriyat Factions and their failures to yield any positive results. The Third Front is hence expected to act as a more dynamic platform than the other two factions of Hurriyat.

The political analysts also suggest that finally for the first time in the pro-freedom history of Kashmir the ‘Third Front‘seems to be taking a concrete shape.

1987 elections forced Kashmiris to take arms : BJP

Jammu, Apr 23: In a noteworthy statement, a senior state BJP leader Saturday said the rigged elections of 1987 forced United Jihad Council (UJC) chief Muhammad Yousuf Shah alias Syed Salah-ud-Din to take to arms, reports Greater Kashmir.

“Faulty administrative functioning in the state and rigged assembly elections of 1987 forced the UJC chief Syed Salah-ud-Din to pick up the gun,” former union minister of state for defence and BJP legislature party leader, Chaman Lal Gupta told reporters here today.

“If we go into the history of Jammu and Kashmir, former minister Ghulam Mohi-ud-Din Shah, who was losing 1987 assembly elections with a huge margin, was declared winner on the directions of the then government. Everybody knows that Syed Salah-ud-Din who was at that time in mainstream and had contested the said election was forced to pick up the gun alongwith his colleagues following mass rigging of that election by the government,” Gupta said.

Gupta made these remarks in the backdrop of action against him by the party high-command for cross-voting in the recent Legislative Council polls which he said were also `rigged’.

“This is also the matter of probe that whether our seven MLAs have betrayed the party or not. There should be probe as how seven MLAs cross-voted. Mera Yeh Maanana Hai Ki Yahan Par Bahut Kuch Hota Hai (Anything is possible in Jammu and Kashmir,” he remarked.

Gupta said a bigger conspiracy was being hatched by “external and internal forces” aimed at taking Jammu and Kashmir to the pre-1953 position.

“Some external forces in collusion with internal forces are bent upon to take the state to the pre-1953 position by implementing the recommendations of Interlocutors. These external forces couldn’t succeed unless they get the logical support of internal forces (insiders),” the BJP leader said.

He said all-out efforts were being made to implement the recommendations of the Interlocutors who have recommended pre-1953 status for Jammu and Kashmir. “These elements are bent upon denting BJP’s image as they know that it is the only party which could oppose all such manipulations and fight against these forces,” he said, adding “All such developments and attempts will harm the interests of Jammu.”
He alleged that attempts were also being made to uproot BJP from Jammu and Kashmir.

Gupta, who is among the seven MLAs suspended of the party high command for cross-voting in April 13 LC polls, also questioned the suspension, saying the central leadership should make public the parameters and criteria for singling out seven MLAs while sparing other four in cross-voting fiasco.

On Friday, two suspended MLAs of the party, Baldev Raj Sharma and Lal Chand had also questioned the central leadership’s action and had asked the party high command to show the evidence and criteria on the basis of which seven MLAs were suspended.

Gupta termed the cross-voting fiasco as “unprecedented tragedy” and “unforgivable”, saying the incident is “highly condemnable” and it never happened in the history of the BJP.

He, however, denied that he has “betrayed” the party and remarked, “Time and again I have proved my loyalty. It was highly painful moment of my life when I was included among those seven MLAs who were suspended for cross-voting. I want to fully deny it as I have never betrayed the party and whatever party high command directed me, I followed that with full zeal and honesty.”

“I want to know as to what parameters they have used to single-out the seven MLAs while sparing the other four. The criterion should be made public and the decision should be judicious so that public come to know who the real culprits were,” he demanded.

Meanwhile, in virtual revolt against the party action, another BJP MLA, Prof Gharu Ram, has requested the Speaker Muhammad Akbar Lone to “treat his resignation withdrawn” as and when forwarded to him by the BJP high command.

Joining other five suspended MLAs, Gharu Ram shot a letter to the Speaker, requesting him to turn down his resignation if the BJP high command forwards it to him.

Sources said that he also reposed faith in the leadership of Chaman Lal Gutpa, saying he was their leader in the Legislative Assembly.

On Thursday, five BJP legislators had met the Speaker and gave in writing that the resignation letters which they gave to the party high command should be considered withdrawn.

APHC Constituent Excluded for Meeting Interlocutors

Srinagar | Apr 20, 2011: Separatist Kashmiri group Hurriyat Conference headed by Mirwaiz Umer Farooq today suspended its constituent Itehad-ul-Muslimeen (IuM) after the chief patron of the party Maulana Mohammad Abbas Ansari met the Centre's interlocutors on Kashmir here.

"We have suspended IuM for violating the Hurriyat decision on the issue of meeting the interlocutors appointed by Government of India," Mirwaiz told PTI.

Ansari, a former chairman of the Hurriyat Conference, met the interlocutors panel headed by veteran journalist Dileep Padgaonkar today.

The IuM is among the founder constituents of Hurriyat Conference and one of the seven parties which have representative in the highest decision-making body, the Executive Committee.

Mirwaiz said the suspension will remain in force till the next meeting of the executive body of the amalgam which is likely to take place sometime next week.

"Although IuM is represented by Ansari's son, Maulana Masroor Abbas Ansari in the Hurriyat meetings, the party is a member of the amalgam and should have abided by the Hurriyat decision," he said.

Ansari was the chairman of the Hurriyat Conference when  leader  Ali Shah Geelani had engineered a split in the amalgam for the failure of the leadership to run an effective boycott campaign in the 2002 Assembly elections.

BJP will talk to separatists: Rajnath Singh

http://jkmpic.blogspot.c
Jammu, April 12: Senior BJP leader Rajnath Singh Monday said his party had no reservations about talking to different shades of opinion in Jammu and Kashmir including Kashmiri separatists, reports Rissing Kashmir.

"We welcome all shades of opinion in Kashmir including the separatists for talks. But it will be within the ambit of the constitution," said Rajnath, who is in Jammu along with the BJP's J&K parliamentarian study group.

He said the group was not going to knock at the separatists' doors but would hear them if they came forward to talk.

The former BJP president, who is also the group's chairman, said the BJP did not have a vision document on Jammu Kashmir so far and the party leadership felt the need for having one to project it in the country and the Parliament. “We believe that genuine aspirations of the people of State should be taken into consideration if peace and prosperity has to prevail and we are here for that,” he said.

Rajnath said the group would hold discussions and take feedback from civil society members, bureaucrats, political and social organisations. "We will study the genesis of the people's problem and highlight them in the Parliament. The BJP has not formally invited any certain section of the society but those who want to meet us are welcome,” he said.

He said the group would conclude its Jammu visit on Wednesday and then leave for a two-day Srinagar tour. "The team will interact with people in the Ladakh region during its next visit,” he added.

Ilyas Kashmiri

US announces $5 Mn reward for info on Ilyas Kashmiri
Johan Simith
Washington Apr 7: The US has announced a bounty of USD 5 million on the head of Pakistan-based dreaded global terrorist Mohammad Ilyas Kashmiri, a key suspect in the Mumbai terror attacks who is now called the "new bin Laden". He is also behind the killing of top APHC leader Sheikh Abdul Aziz. The State department said Kashmiri is the commander of the terrorist organisation Harakat-ul-Jihad al-Islami (HuJI), which is linked to al-Qaeda, and has launched several attacks in India and Pakistan.

HuJI is believed to be behind the March 2006 suicide bombing at the US consulate in Karachi that killed four people, including US diplomat David Foy, and injured 48 others. Kashmiri, according to Pakistani media reports, has been named as al-Qaeda chief for Afghanistan and Pakistan in place of Mustafa Abu al-Yazid, who was killed in a drone strike in May last year. He is presently believed to be holed up with commanders of al-Qaeda Lashkar al-Zil.

In January 2010, a US federal grand jury indicted Kashmiri for terrorism-related offences in connection with a plot to attack the Jyllands-Posten newspaper in Denmark, over cartoons depicting the Prophet Mohammed.

Last August, the US branded Kashmiri as a "Specially Designated Global Terrorist" and HuJI was labelled as a "Foreign Terrorist Organisation."

Born in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in 1964, Kashmiri is six feet tall and weighs about 90 kilogram, the State Department said in a statement.

He has black hair and brown eyes and has been seen with a thick beard dyed white, black or red at various times. He has lost sight in one eye, often wears aviator-style sunglasses and is missing an index finger too.

Kashmiri is also known by several aliases such as Muhammad Ilyas Kashmiri, Elias al-Kashmiri, Ilyas, Naib Amir, and Commando Commander.

"We encourage anyone with information on Mohammad Ilyas Kashmiri's location to contact the nearest US embassy or consulate, any US military commander, or the Rewards for Justice office via the website ( www.rewardsforjustice.net), e-mail (RFJ@state.Gov) or mail (Rewards for Justice, Washington, DC 20520-0303, USA). All information will be kept strictly confidential," the State Department statement said.

11th August 2OO8 The Bloody Day of Kashmiri Nation

By Er. Bilal Ahmad

Sincerely supreme sacrifice makes one supreme.”
Sheikh Aziz
 (Father of Jehad-e-Kashmir)
was a supreme. His sacrifice led to a mass uprising which attracted global attention.

In a A symbolic march by Kashmirs to march towards north (Muzaffarabad) when they are harmed in the south (Hindu Jammu) has caused more lives for Kashmiris. It is indeed a shame for human civilization that India continues to be engaged in genocide of Kashmiris. As part of Indian strategy to kill Kashmiris in a sustained manner under different guises, some more Kashmiri Muslims were murdered by India in the background of the Hindus fascist fight for Sri Amarnath illegal land deal. After direct fire on Muzaffarabad marchers, at least eight persons, including a most senior Hurriyat freedom fighting leader of Jammu and Kashmir, Shaikh Abdul Aziz (Father of Jehad-e-Kashmir), were killed as they were marching towards the Line of Control in Baramulla district leader and a boy were killed by Indian security forces in Srinagar district on August 15 a couple of days ahead of Indian independence day.

Following the killing of six protestors including most senior Sheikh Abdul Aziz, the authorities imposed curfew in Srinagar and other parts of Kashmir. However, the freedom fighters have reiterated their resolve to continue their mach, come what may. Economic terrorism unleashed by Hindus in Jammu region by blocking the movement of goods between Jammu and Kashmir have caused serious economic problems and this economic terrorism is resented by Kashmirs who have suffered badly and decided to mach to Muzaffarabad to show their anger. Economic terrorism is been used by USA and the Western powers against third world nations, now especially Iran, to cripple their economies. India has thought out similar strategy to make Kashmiris to bend completely and bow down to Indian military dictates. Economic blockade is a crude manifestation of the decades_ old policy of making Kashmir economy fatally dependent on others. Notwithstanding arrests by police in different parts of Kashmir,

Kashmiris in thirty hundred thousands marched towards North Kashmir to participate in the Muzaffarabad March to protest against the economic blockade of the Valley. In North Kashmir, the march to Muzaffarabad commenced from Sopore Fruit Mandi after people defied restrictions. Sopore Fruit Mandi was besieged early morning by police and CRPF men and five trade union leaders were detained and tyres of decorated fruit laden trucks were deflated by the troopers. After arrest of leaders, announcements were made through Public Address System (PAS) asking people to join the Muzaffarabad March_. Thousands of people again joined march with women lined up on roadside yelling pro freedom and pro_Pakistan slogans. They were seen serving water and food packets to the protestors and praying for their safety. After the protestors reached Baramulla, the processionists boarded buses, trucks, scooters to move towards Muzaffarabad. Amidst pro−freedom, pro−Pakistan and anti−India slogans, the protestors, who were led by Huriyat leaders, Sheikh Abdul Aziz and Shabir Ahmad Shah reached chahal, Uri, some 20 kms from Uri. They could not move ahead as the army had dug up trenches to prevent people and vehicles from moving ahead. When the protestors tried to march ahead, they were fired on by the troopers, causing injuring to at least 20 persons including Sheikh Abdul Aziz. Aziz received bullet injury in his abdomen and was rushed to nearby hospital, where from he was referred to SMHS hospital, where he succumbed. Meanwhile, thousands of people were on streets till late night at Sangrama, Delina, Sheeri, Hyderbugh, Zumgum, and Pattan. They were waiting for the sunrise to recommence their _Muzaffarabad March_. There have been thousands of known and unknown Kashmiri martyrs who have laid down their sacred lives in their freedom struggle, much more than what the India had lost dung their independence fight under British rule. Sheikh Abdul Aziz was a pro−Pakistan Kashmiri leaders fighting for the cause of gaining sovereignty back from occupying India. Muzaffarabad is legally a part of Kashmir, now the capital of Azad Kashmir with an independent premier administrated by Pakistan and which would be a part of new Kashmir when it becomes free from Indian military occupation.

Kashmiris have been at the receiving end since their nation was annexed by it neighbor India and hardships are nothing new to them either. Also, now this is not something new to the now fragile economy of Kashmir that it has been subjected to, over the last six decades. The backdrop in which the economy of Kashmir traveled along the time path included a focus on making Kashmir prone to dependency cult, intentionally pursued by New Delhi; priority setting as per the whims of policy planners at New Delhi. The horticulture, floriculture and other commodity sectors have suffered losses that have varied ramifications and most of the growers cannot possibly sustain these losses. These commodities are flooding the already saturated and impoverished local market of Kashmir. The acute hardships faced by people in valley by scarcity of essential commodities, life saving drugs and medicine, even kids_ items, by the economic blockade does call for a new thinking based on self reliance. Of course, now it looks the popular uprising is not going to end until the Kashmirs obtain freedom and independence from India. First of economic terrorism must end followed by state military terrorism. It is noteworthy that in this regard JKLF Chairman Muhammad Yaseen Malik went on a hunger strike unto death but fortunately freedom fighting leaders like Geelani persuaded him to end his long hunger strike. Geelani also reminded him saying, _We differ with the idea of fast unto death as it is not an Islamic way and that we must pray to the almighty for the continuity and eternity of the unity we have showed this time_. Besides, no one will care in India even if entire Muslim community in Kashmir goes on hunger strike until death. India promotes genocide in Kashmir, after all and death of Kashmiris and other Muslims in any manner is welcome to New Delhi. But it is time the Governor of Jammu Kashmir NN Vohra considers recommending to New Delhi to grant independence to Kashmir so that the Kashmiris do not have to stave and die like this and let them live with honor and resources. Any further day in decision−making in favor of Kashmiris could be disastrous for both Kashmiris and India. The Kashmirs do have the efficient leadership, resources and the capacity to govern their own nation in a peaceful manner. About the author: Er. Bilal ahmad can be reached at: bilal2009@gmail.com

JKPL URGES UN, INTERNATIONAL COURT OF JUSTICE

Srinagar, Oct 16: The Chairman of  Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Leauge (JKPL) Sheikh Yaqoob on Thursday urged the International Court of Justice and United Nations War Crimes Tribunal to initiate a probe into the unmarked and mass graves in the disputed state of Kashmir.

Sheikh Yaqoob   said during the past over two decades nearly 10,000 Kashmiris went missing in the custody of various agencies. “Unmarked and mass graves have been found in various areas of the Valley. We believe that most of the Kashmiris who have been subjected to enforced disappearance are buried in these unmarked and mass graves. We make a fervent appeal to the International Court of Justice and United Nations War Crimes Tribunal to send their teams to the Valley and initiate a through probe into the unmarked graves for unmasking the perpetrators and putting an end to killing of innocent Kashmiris,” Sheikh Yaqoob said.

Citing example of extra-judicial executions, Sheikh Yaqoob said in 2006, five people mostly from south Kashmir’s Islamabad district were killed in a fake encounter in Ganderbal for rewards and promotions by the Special Operations Group of Police and Army.

“The case is only tip-of an ice-berg. In past two decades, the troopers turned Kashmir into killings fields by executing Kashmiris and burying their bodies in unmarked graves to suppress the movement for right to self-determination,” Sheikh Yaqoob  said.

Pertinently, last year the International Peoples’ Tribunal on Human Rights and Justice, a rights watchdog in its report ‘Buried Evidence: Unknown, Unmarked, and Mass Graves” had claimed to have to found 2700 unmarked and mass graves containing bodies of 2943 people across, 55 villages in north Kashmir.

“The graves include bodies of extra-judicial, summary and arbitrary executions, as well as massacres by the Indian military and paramilitary forces. Of these graves 2373 (87.9 percent) were unnamed. 154 contained two bodies each and 23 contained more than two bodies. Within these 23 graves, the number of bodies ranged from 3 to 17,” the report had stated.

Sheikh Yaqoob  maintained that panacea for all the problems of Kashmiris’ is demilitarization. “Till the troopers leave the State, Kashmiris will continue suffer, fathers will have to face the painful moment of shouldering coffins of their sons and playfields will turn into graveyards.”

Accusing India of exploiting natural resources of Kashmiris, Sheikh Yaqoob  said the power generated from Kashmir is supplied to other states. “While Kashmiris are left in lurch. Our forests and mountains are also being vandalized by troopers. I want to maintain that Kashmiris will feel sense of security when the troopers vacate the State,” he said. (Writer-South Asia)

Mirwaiz Umar, Sheikh Yaqoob remembers Shaheed-i-Azemat (Martyr of Determination)

Srinagar, August11: Senior Hurriyat Leader and Chairman Jammu Kashmir Peoples League, Sheikh Yaqoob has said that the second death anniversary of Sheikh Abdul Aziz Shaheed-e-Azemat  (Martyr of Determination), would be observed across Jammu Kashmir on August 11. Sheikh Yaqoob reiterated that Aziz was imprisoned scores of times for the sole crime of speaking the truth, never compromising his principles and calling for justice. Yaqoob said that the people of Kashmir would never forget the selfless contribution and the tireless efforts of Sheikh Sahib, who has scarified his life for the cause of nation.
Srinagar-Muzaffarabd March
Yaqoob said that the blood of martyrs would not go waste as Kashmir is being discussed in international forums and the world community had taken keen interest in its solution.

"The Kashmir movement is passing through a critical phase and all of us have to resolve our determination towards it. We have to accept the challenges and take the movement to its logical end," Sheikh added

The PL Chairman said that this Day will be observed also in international level like in Pakistan, Brussels, Canada, Australia, etc to reaffirm Kashmiris resolve to continue their struggle against all odds.
Sheikh  Yaqoob called upon the world community and international human rights organizations to put pressure on India to halt massive human rights violations in Kashmir and resolve the long-standing Kashmir dispute in accordance with aspirations of Kashmiris.

Sheikh Aziz (Martyr of Determination), was killed on 11th August 2008 at Chayal Boniyar Uri, Baramulla while heading a peaceful protest march to LOC in view of the economic blockade enforced on Kashmiris by right wing Hindu organizations of Jammu.

Glowing tributes paid to Sheikh Aziz

Washington, August 09 : Kashmir American Council-KAC, Ex Director Dr Ghualm Nabi Fai rich tributes were paid to the Shaheed-e-Azeemat, Sheikh Abdul Aziz who has scarified his life for the cause of nation. Sheikh Aziz was ascribed to be amongst the frontline Pro-freedom leaders and was one of the Executive Member of All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) - which represents the aspiration of Kashmiris politically, diplomatically and socially.

On August 11, 2008, about 300,000 people from across  Kashmir, along with trucks loaded with fruit, began marching toward several points on the 778-kilometer Line of Control to cross over into the Pakistani side of Kashmir, in their bid to reach Muzaffarabad, the capital of Pakistani Kashmir. Indian security forces opened fire at the marchers at several places to break up their protests, killing 10, including senior Pro-pakistani Kashmiri leader (commonly known as Baba-e-Jehad-i-Kashmir) Sheikh Abdul Aziz who was also a prominent member of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference and was also a member of the co-ordination committee of ethnic and religious nationalities struggling for right to self-determination under the chairmanship of Justice Ajit Singh Bains formed in Delhi on March 23, 2008.  “Sheikh Aziz was a friend of Sikhs and supporter of Sikh cause for independence,” Over 1,000 people were arrested, and hundreds of wounded were hospitalized at different hospitals across the Kashmir valley. As the protests continued, over 3000 truckloads of fruit were destroyed, allegedly by Indian security forces.

Protests calling for freedom from India continued through August and September in different parts of  Kashmir, with dozens killed and hundreds injured. However, a government-brokered agreement with the Hindu protesters of the Jammu region was reached, under which the land allotment to the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB), which had been cancelled due to protests by Kashmiri Muslims, was revived in a different form.

The Jammu and Kashmir government, with the understanding of some Muslim and Hindu leaders, leased the land to the SASB for the limited pilgrimage season, giving them no proprietary or title rights. The Hindu leaders called off their stir after signing the lease agreement. The agreement said: "The Shrine Board  may use the land for erecting temporary prefabricated accommodation and toilet facilities and for shopkeepers to set up shops."  This second reversal by the government in its decision to allocate the land to the Hindu shrine has been rejected by the Kashmiri leaders, fuelling a continuation of anti-India protests. The demonstrations are the biggest since 11th august, 2008 when violent anti-India protests killed about 72 Kashmiri  muslims.

Kashmiri Americans held a peace rally in front of the Indian Embassy to record their protest against human rights violations in occupied Kashmir and to remind Manmohan Singh, the Prime Minister of India, that his promise of zero tolerance has not seen the light of the day.

The demonstration was highly impressive and reverberating with the slogans of “Indian army go back.” Protesters were carrying placards demanding ‘Self-determination’, ‘India honour UN pledges’, ‘Stop killing of peaceful protesters’, ‘Stop state terrorism in Kashmir’, ‘President Obama appoint special envoy on Kashmir’ and ‘Kashmiris demand right to life’.

The participants also raised slogans having one singular theme that India quit Kashmir and allow the people of Kashmir to choose their political destiny. All the Diaspora political parties showed unflinching faith in their goal for freedom.

The Executive Director of Kashmir Centre Washington, Dr Ghulam Nabi Fai addressing the protesters said, “We demand that Indian Government stop the killings and agree to an impartial investigation into the recent killings, and into the human rights violations going on in Kashmir for the longest time.” He said that to resolve the outstanding Kashmir dispute between India and Pakistan, the international community in general, the United States in particular, and the full leadership of the people of Jammu and Kashmir must be involved for lasting peace in South Asia.

Ms Sanaa Naqash said, “My heart aches and I feel grieved for the innocent kids brutally being beaten, shot and killed. I can't bear to see such acts done to my people anymore. This needs to end and we need to stand together as one, during this difficult time. Let us pray for our kids, the mothers that lost their sons, the fathers that lost their shields, the sons that lost their fathers, and all the people that have sacrificed their lives for us.”

Attorney Mumtaz Wani implored that the sacrifices of the Kashmiri people will not be allowed to go waste and the world would have to honour their determination for salvation and freedom. He said that the killings of teenagers must shake the conscience of all peace loving people.

Ehtisham Kayani pledged to support the cause of Kashmir till the people achieved their right to self-determination. He said that self-determination is non-negotiable.
Mujtaba Wani made a passionate appeal to the world community to come forward to rescue the innocent people of Kashmir.

Umaid Qureishi made fervent plea to President Obama to use his personal influence to persuade India and Pakistan to settle the dispute over Kashmir and impress upon India to bring an end to the atrocities by Indian troops in occupied Kashmir.

Zubair Khan said that the people of Azad Kashmir were united in their support to the oppressed people of Kashmir. Ms Aneela Khan appealed the audience to continue the struggle at the international level to make the world community aware that Kashmiris would not accept anything short of right to self-determination.

Noorul Amin said that the sacrifices of the people of Kashmir would not go in vain.  He asked the world community to come to rescue the people of Kashmir in their hour of need. Zulfikar Khan congratulated the Kashmiri Americans for making the demonstration a grand success. This demonstration he said is a moral booster for those who have said no to Indian occupation. e-Media is Reviving The Kashmir Freedom Moment

By: Sheikh GULZAAR
Srinagar, August 04: These days a term “New Media” is used almost everywhere. But only a few people actually know its meaning. “New Media” means to encompass the emergence of digital, computerized, or networked information and communication technologies in the later part of the 20th century. Most technologies described as “new media” are digital, often having characteristics of being manipulatable, networkable, dense, compressible, and impartial.

People around the world are taking advantage of new media. It is the most effective, fastest and easiest way to communicate with other people around the world. Social networking sites like Facebook, video streaming sites like Youtube and blogs all fall into the horizon of new media.

The traditional media have been covering and reporting about the events occurring in Kashmir for years now. But for last two years, the people have started reporting events on their own, utilizing the new media. Young men using camera mobile phones are recording events all around Kashmir and sharing captured videos and pictures on sites like Youtube.

According to these men, by doing this they are gathering evidences against the Indian Army about their inhumane treatment with the innocent people. And so far they are quite successful. One of the most famous videos shared was shot by Adnan, a 15 years old boy in which aftermath events are shown of the killing of a Sheikh Abdul Aziz & others by a bullet in year 2008. The video was viewed more than 3, 50,000 times in just a few day after its upload.

By the way, this type of reporting is termed as Citizen Journalism. People of Kashmir are communicating their messages with the rest of the world utilizing digital publishing. A group of youngsters which is highly involved in these reporting term it as ‘Cyber Protest’.(Writer-South Asia)
