1987 elections forced Kashmiris to take arms : BJP

Jammu, Apr 23: In a noteworthy statement, a senior state BJP leader Saturday said the rigged elections of 1987 forced United Jihad Council (UJC) chief Muhammad Yousuf Shah alias Syed Salah-ud-Din to take to arms, reports Greater Kashmir.

“Faulty administrative functioning in the state and rigged assembly elections of 1987 forced the UJC chief Syed Salah-ud-Din to pick up the gun,” former union minister of state for defence and BJP legislature party leader, Chaman Lal Gupta told reporters here today.

“If we go into the history of Jammu and Kashmir, former minister Ghulam Mohi-ud-Din Shah, who was losing 1987 assembly elections with a huge margin, was declared winner on the directions of the then government. Everybody knows that Syed Salah-ud-Din who was at that time in mainstream and had contested the said election was forced to pick up the gun alongwith his colleagues following mass rigging of that election by the government,” Gupta said.

Gupta made these remarks in the backdrop of action against him by the party high-command for cross-voting in the recent Legislative Council polls which he said were also `rigged’.

“This is also the matter of probe that whether our seven MLAs have betrayed the party or not. There should be probe as how seven MLAs cross-voted. Mera Yeh Maanana Hai Ki Yahan Par Bahut Kuch Hota Hai (Anything is possible in Jammu and Kashmir,” he remarked.

Gupta said a bigger conspiracy was being hatched by “external and internal forces” aimed at taking Jammu and Kashmir to the pre-1953 position.

“Some external forces in collusion with internal forces are bent upon to take the state to the pre-1953 position by implementing the recommendations of Interlocutors. These external forces couldn’t succeed unless they get the logical support of internal forces (insiders),” the BJP leader said.

He said all-out efforts were being made to implement the recommendations of the Interlocutors who have recommended pre-1953 status for Jammu and Kashmir. “These elements are bent upon denting BJP’s image as they know that it is the only party which could oppose all such manipulations and fight against these forces,” he said, adding “All such developments and attempts will harm the interests of Jammu.”

He alleged that attempts were also being made to uproot BJP from Jammu and Kashmir.

Gupta, who is among the seven MLAs suspended of the party high command for cross-voting in April 13 LC polls, also questioned the suspension, saying the central leadership should make public the parameters and criteria for singling out seven MLAs while sparing other four in cross-voting fiasco.

On Friday, two suspended MLAs of the party, Baldev Raj Sharma and Lal Chand had also questioned the central leadership’s action and had asked the party high command to show the evidence and criteria on the basis of which seven MLAs were suspended.

Gupta termed the cross-voting fiasco as “unprecedented tragedy” and “unforgivable”, saying the incident is “highly condemnable” and it never happened in the history of the BJP.

He, however, denied that he has “betrayed” the party and remarked, “Time and again I have proved my loyalty. It was highly painful moment of my life when I was included among those seven MLAs who were suspended for cross-voting. I want to fully deny it as I have never betrayed the party and whatever party high command directed me, I followed that with full zeal and honesty.”

“I want to know as to what parameters they have used to single-out the seven MLAs while sparing the other four. The criterion should be made public and the decision should be judicious so that public come to know who the real culprits were,” he demanded.

Meanwhile, in virtual revolt against the party action, another BJP MLA, Prof Gharu Ram, has requested the Speaker Muhammad Akbar Lone to “treat his resignation withdrawn” as and when forwarded to him by the BJP high command.

Joining other five suspended MLAs, Gharu Ram shot a letter to the Speaker, requesting him to turn down his resignation if the BJP high command forwards it to him.

Sources said that he also reposed faith in the leadership of Chaman Lal Gutpa, saying he was their leader in the Legislative Assembly.

On Thursday, five BJP legislators had met the Speaker and gave in writing that the resignation letters which they gave to the party high command should be considered withdrawn.

Independent J&K to emerge as strong nation: JKLF

Srinagar, Sept 27: A day after Hurriyat (G) chairman, Syed Ali Geelani said Jammu and Kashmir’s survival as an independent state was difficult, the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front Sunday said the independent state would emerge as a strong nation on the world map because of its huge water and other natural resources.

Geelani in an interview with NewsX on Saturday said that he personally felt it was difficult for the state to survive as an independent entity given its geo-strategic location. However, the JKLF while rejecting Geelani’s statement said that the majority of the people in the state were in favor of independence as was “evident” from various surveys conducted by international organizations.  

Without naming Geelani, the JKLF leaders in a statement said, “A prominent pro-freedom leader on Saturday told an Indian news channel that an independent Kashmir was not viable.  There are several countries smaller than Jammu and Kashmir in terms of size and population and low on natural resources that have survived as independent entities. Furthermore, if Jammu and Kashmir is given independence it would thrive merely on its huge water reservoirs and other natural resources.”

“ In 1990, when other groups joined the freedom movement the JKLF to avoid internal anarchy announced to accept the decision of the majority during a referendum— whether in favour of India, Pakistan or independence. And the same principle was the basis of the Hurriyat Conference constitution. The JKLF leadership stands by its promise of respecting the will of the majority,” the leaders. (Writer-South Asia)

Chidambaram Appeals to People of J&K to Ensure

New Delhi, 27 September: The Union Home Minister, Shri P. Chidambaram has appealed to all sections of the people of Jammu and Kashmir to ensure that all schools and colleges function normally. In a statement issued here today he expressed happiness over the fact that most schools and colleges have reopened, disregarding a call by one of the Hurriyat leaders. Following is the text of the statement:

“Government is happy to learn that most schools and colleges have reopened in Jammu and Kashmir and most students have gone back to school/college today.

There was a call by one of the Hurriyat leaders to parents asking them not to send their children to school/college. Happily, parents have disregarded that call and sent their children to schools/colleges.

There were a few minor incidents of stone-pelting on school buses at Habak, Bemina and Nowgam. How can any right thinking person pelt stones on school buses? I hope that such mischief will stop immediately. Anyone who has the interest of the children at heart cannot indulge intone-pelting; nor should anyone support such mischievous attempts to interfere with the functioning of schools and colleges.

I am confident that the few schools and colleges that remain closed today, presumably out of caution, will reopen tomorrow. I am also confident that the attendance will improve significantly tomorrow. The Government of J&K has assured us that every effort is being made to ensure that all schools and colleges reopen and function normally and that security will be provided to enable the students to attend schools and colleges.

I appeal to all sections of the people of J&K, especially parents, to cooperate with the State Government and ensure that all schools and colleges function normally”.

Pakistani flags fly over Kashmir

Srinagar, August : In disputed state of Jammu and  Kashmir, the APHC Chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and veteran Kashmiri Hurriyet leader, Syed Ali Gilani have expressed complete solidarity with the government and people of Pakistan on the flood disasters in the country. Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Syed Ali Gilani in their separate statements in Srinagar on the occasion of Pakistan’s 64th Independence Day, today, prayed for the stability, prosperity and progress of the country.

They thanked the government and people of Pakistan for their continued moral, political and diplomatic support to the Kashmiris’ just struggle for right to self-determination.

The Crescent and Star flutters in the hearts and the minds of the brave people of Kashmir. No amount of repression and obfuscation can hide that fact. The Kashmiris once again proved it in the dog days of August. What do you say about a people that hoist Pakistani flags and hold freedom rallies on August 14th (Pakistan independence day), and then the next day on August 15th (Indian independence day) they burn Indian flags and host black flags across the state.

It says that the the Kashmiris in their hearts and in their souls are Pakistan. they listen to Pakistani songs, watch Pakistani Television and root for the Pakistani cricket team during the India-Pakistan matches. Pro-freedom, Pro-Pakistan and Anti-Indian demonstrations continue in Srinagar. “They” hide the pictures of the Pakistan flags, but once in a while, they slip up. Keep an eye out, you will find hundreds of green Muslim flags mingled in with Pakistani flags in the crowds, and atop building in Kashmir. You see them burning the Indian flag and kissing the Pakistani flag. They yearn for freedom and they aspire to become Pakistanis. Pakistan is their destiny and “Azadi” (freedom) is their dream.

Every year on 14th Aug (Pakistani Independence Day), Pakistani flag is hosted every where in Kashmir, including the govt. buildings and on 15th Aug, same people burn the Indian flag. 

APHC leader, Yasmeen Raja led a big procession in Pampore in connection with Pakistan’s Independence Day. A Pakistani flag was unfurled while children sang Pakistan’s national anthem on the occasion.

Hurriyet leaders, Agha Syed Hassan Al-Moosvi, Aasiya Andrabi, Masarrat Aalam Butt, Farooq Ahmed Dar, Jammu and Kashmir People's Leauge, Tehreek-e-Hurriyet, Democratic Freedom Party, National Front, Peoples Freedom League, Jammu and Kashmir Salvation Movement, Mass Movement and High Court Bar Association in occupied Kashmir in their statements felicitated Pakistanis on the Independence Day. The APHC-AJK chapter organized a function in Islamabad, today, to extend felicitations to the people of Pakistan on this occasion. It was presided over by Convener, Mehmood Ahmed Saghar.

Meanwhile, despite curfew and stringent restrictions, forceful anti-India demonstrations were staged in Hazratbal, Pattan, Bandipore, Budgam and Seloo. Several people including a 5-year old girl were injured when Indian troops resorted to heavy baton charge and excessive teargas shelling to disperse the protesters in Islamabad, Ganderbal, Pattan, Bandipore and Seloo. Thousands of people, today, participated in the funeral of a youth who was killed in the firing of Indian troops on protestors in Trehgam, yesterday.

On the other hand, Kashmiris on both sides of the Line of Control and the world over will observe the Indian Independence Day, tomorrow, as Black Day marked by complete strike in occupied Kashmir and protest rallies in world capitals. Call for observance of the Black Day has been given by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Syed Ali Gilani. Srinagar, August 8:  Acording to Kashmir Media service, a two-day shutdown will be observed from tomorrow to protest against the killing of innocent protesters by Indian police and troops.

Call for the shutdown has been given by veteran Kashmiri Hurriyet leader, Syed Ali Gilani as part of the Quit Kashmir Movement. He urged people to conduct a march towards Pampore town on Wednesday to mark the 2nd martyrdom anniversary of APHC leader, Shaheed-e-Azemat Sheikh Abdul Aziz.

The Acting President of High Court Bar Association of  Kashmir, Aijaz Bedar and senior lawyer, Zafar Shah addressing a press conference in Srinagar, today, said that the occupation authorities had restricted all political activities in the occupied territory, which had forced the lawyers to come on streets. They demanded immediate release of the Bar President, Mian Abdul Qayoom and General Secretary, Ghulam Nabi Shaheen and all Hurriyet leaders and activists.

The APHC Chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, who continued to remain under house arrest urged the Organization of Islamic Conference to immediately call a session of its Kashmir Contact Group to deliberate on prevailing situation in occupied Kashmir. The Executive Council of APHC in a meeting in Srinagar said that the liberation movement would continue till the Kashmiris secured their inalienable right to self-determination.

Citizens Forum for Democratic Rights took out a peace march in Jammu to express solidarity with the victims of Indian police and troops in the Kashmir Valley during the last two months. The march was led by Professor Zahoorudin, Anu Radha B Jamwal and Advocate Chowdhry Anwar.

The Washington-based, Muslim Public Affairs Council in a statement posted on its website while calling for an immediate end to the use of force against the civilians in occupied Kashmir demanded an impartial international probe into the recent civilian killings by Indian police and troops in the territory.

by Tanveer Habib: I am sorry to say that both are strong enough to be compared with each othjer. While Sajjad is young and dynamic Geelani sahab is more determined unchanging and sound. Both are needed by the people of Kashmir very much. last night on CNN-IBN Sajjad sahab himself said that it was below his dignity to speak against Geelani sahab, so why create a divide? I was really angry with Sajjad sahab for being in the fray for elections carried out by India but now i realise he is an asset and we need him. I would like him to unite with Geelani sahab as soon as possible. We need him.

‘Sheikh Aziz's town boiled"

Pampore , July 31: In disputed state of Kashmir, braving restrictions, people mostly youth staged protests against India and killing of civilians by paramilitary forces firing and clashed with police and CRPF personnel across the Valley. At least three dozens persons were injured in paramilitary forces’ actions who used teargas shells and brute force to disperse protestors.

Defying restrictions, youth staged pro-freedom demonstrations at Pampore, Sambora, Khrewa, Awantipora, Lethpora,Chanpora, and other areas of Shaheed-e-Azemat Sheikh Abdul Aziz's town. The protestors clashed with Indian army, STF, and Indian Central Reserve Police Force, who used tear smoke shells to disperse the protesting youth.The protestors clashed with policemen, who lobbed tear smoke shells to disperse the agitating youth. At least 7 people including some women were injured in the police actions.

The locals said the police and CRPF men beat up pedestrians smashed windowpanes of several houses and parked vehicles at Pampore, Sambora and Awantipora localities of South Kashmir..

The residents of South Kashmir areas including , Nambalbal, Shaheed-e-Azemat Road, Drangbal and Sambora on Friday accused the troops of going berserk by ransacking houses and beating inmates.

Pampore  residents said huge contingents of police in presence of senior officials started pelting stones on the houses breaking the windowpanes.  “Thereafter the cops barged into the houses and beat the inmates including women and children,” the locals said.

Besides they said the cops ransacked the household items including electronics and furniture. “They kicked the TV sets and other electronic goods,” the locals alleged.

Residents of  Pampore said the windowpanes of houses close to the main road were damaged. “Almost all the houses near the main road bore the brunt of the vandalism as cops went berserk,” said the residents of Pampore while showing the broken windows of the houses.  

According to police, a mob of slogan-shouting protesters attacked the Naidkhai camp of the state armed police in Bandipora district Saturday afternoon.

'The policemen posted inside fired warning shots in the air which failed to quell the mob prompting police to open fire. Two people were critically wounded. One of them, identified as Mudasir Ahmad Lone, 23, later succumbed to injuries,' a police official here said.


A large procession of locals carried the body of the youth from Sumbal police station to Naidkhai village where more mourners joined them targeting security men with stones and rocks.


A teenager identified as Javaid Ahmad Teli sustained a serious gunshot injury when protesters in north Kashmir's Baramulla town attacked security forces deployed in the area. Teli, who suffered a critical head injury, was taken to the Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences at Soura in Srinagar but later succumbed to his injury while undergoing treatment.


Earlier, three people including two women and a boy suffered gunshot injuries in north Kashmir's Kreeri village where a mob attacked a camp of the local police.

The injured have since been admitted to hospitals in Srinagar city. A large mob of protesters attacked vehicles plying on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway at Pampore town,  14 km from here in south Kashmir's Pulwama district. The mob also burnt two vehicles of the Indian Air Force passing through the town during the protests.


All the occupants of the two vehicles, however, escaped unhurt. They took shelter in a local bank building before being rescued by the security forces. The mob had surrounded the local police station in Pampore and the security forces are trying to disperse them using batons and tear smoke shells.


In Sopore town, mobs torched a building at the local railway station and also a fire tender that had reached there to douse the flames.


In south Kashmir's Kakpora town, mobs hurled a petrol bomb at the vehicle of the local deputy superintendent of police. 'The officer and his guards escaped unhurt, but the vehicle was destroyed in the fire triggered by the petrol bomb,' police said. According to police, the number of protesters and security men injured in Saturday's clashes across the Valley is 12. Two protesters were killed in Amargarh area of Sopore town Friday when mobs damaged the rail track there and two more were killed in the adjacent Pattan town where mobs attacked and torched the local police station.


Chief Minister Omar Abdullah convened a meeting of his ministers and senior party leaders in Srinagar, which was also attended by his father and union Renewable Energy Minister Farooq Abdullah. At the end of the meeting, a spokesman of the ruling party said the law and order situation in the Valley was reviewed. 'It was also decided to release all the arrested political leaders and youth very soon. The central government would be urged to start a dialogue with the local separatist leaders without wasting any further time. 'The MLAs (legislators) of the ruling party have been advised to remain stationed in their constituencies and monitor the situation there,' the spokesman said. (Writer-South-Asia)

Srinagar, July 02: : The General Secretary of Hurriyat Conference , Masarat Alam Bhat, on Thursday said the ongoing resistance movement in Jammu Kashmir had nothing to do with Amarnath Yarta.

“Our struggle is not aimed at sabotaging Amarnath Yatra but for liberating Jammu and Kashmir,” Alam said in a statement.

“The ongoing Quit Kashmir movement is gaining momentum with every passing day and it has unnerved the government and it is now vainly trying to give it a communal colour to mislead the people in India,” he said, adding that the “The local agents are a party to this propaganda.”

Masarat made it clear that the ongoing freedom struggle is not against Yatra. “We are fighting for freedom,” he said.

Reacting to the union home minister P Chidambaram’s statement, Masarat termed it as childish, saying that “We will not be overawed by such statements.”

Masarat condemned the deployment of heavy contingents of troopers in and around the Pathar Masjid to prevent the women from assembling there as part of the “Quit Kashmir” movement. “Despite curfew and other restrictions, thousands of women led by Dukhtaran-i-Millat chief Asiya Andrabi assembled at Mughal Masjid, Chattabal, here and made the programme successful,” said Masarat, adding that special prayers were offered on the occasion for the success of ongoing freedom struggle.

Masarat strongly condemned the arrest of youth and attack on the residential houses of civilians by the police and CRPF troopers at various places in the Srinagar city yesterday evening, smashing window panes and beating inmates.

He also condemned the continued detention of pro-freedom leaders and activists including Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai, Dr Muhammad Qasim, Muhammad Yousuf Mir, Muhammad Yousuf Nadeem, Firdous Ahmad Shah, Gen Musa and Ghulam Qadir Bhat.(Writer-South Asia)

No plan to ban Lamhaa, says Govt

Srinagar, 30, June: With Kashmir on the boil, one would think a film with the troubled valley as its theme could run into trouble with the government. But Union Home Secretary G K Pillai says the government has no plans to stall the release of Lamhaa, which stars Sanjay Dutt , Anupam Kher, Bipasha Basu and Kunal Kapoor . Producer Bunty Walia's film is slated to release on July 16, reports rediff

The film, set in Kashmir, tells the story about a soldier played by Dutt and his Kashmiri love interest, played by a de-glamorised Basu. Parzania director Rahul Dholakia had made the film. Director Rahul Dholakia told 16 June to Ed. Sheikh GULZAAR in from Mumbay that film is stated to release on Jully 16.

The home secretary felt that stalling or banning a movie is not the answer to the problem. "This is a democratic set-up and in a democracy people have the right to speak up and put forth their views. I am confident that the release of such a movie will not add to the existing problem," he added.

Dholakia told Rediff.com that he is happy with the home secretary's statement. "This is the right decision. It is the time to create an environment of trust so that the problems are solved. Kashmir is burning today and it is our responsibility to create an environment of trust," the director said.

His movie, he added, is not reflective of the government's views, but deals with the plight of resident Kashmiris. The film does not deal with the sentiments of India or Pakistan on this issue, he added. "We are just dealing with the state of the residents of that beautiful place."

"I am hopeful that the movie will do well," Dholakia said. His last film, starring Naseeruddin Shah and Sarika is yet to be released in Gujarat.
