Arifa Bibi was sentenced to death by stoning by a Pakistani tribal court, and was executed on July 11 at the hands of her family. Her uncle, cousins and other family members threw stones at the woman until she died, all because she had a mobile phone. She was buried in the desert far away from her home village, and according to reports, her family was not permitted to be involved in her funeral.

Stoning has been a common sentence in countries like Pakistan for a long time and is used against women and other vulnerable groups. Since the stoning of Arifa Bibi this summer, women’s rights groups have launched an even stronger campaign to put a ban on stoning.

Naureen Shameem, representative for women’s rights group Women Living Under Muslim Laws, says that stoning is used against women in particular as a way to control them.

“Stoning is a cruel and hideous punishment,” said Shameem. “It is a form of torturing someone to death. It is one of the most brutal forms of violence perpetrated against women in order to control and punish their sexuality and basic freedoms.”

The Asian Human Rights Commission explained the act of stoning against women in a recent press release.

“Stoning to death is a barbaric act from a primitive society,” reads the press release. “Society is sent the message that violence is the way to deal with women and other vulnerable groups. Women’s rights are negated through the use of these forms of punishment. Pakistani society has degenerated to the point that, for a woman, keeping a cell phone has become serious crime. It is treated as a worse crime than gang rape, murder and bomb blasts, through which many people are killed on a daily basis.”

Groups are currently petitioning the United Nations to enact a worldwide ban on stoning. It is not known what progress has been made on that front.

Carob tree-Ceratonia siliqua

Ceratonia siliqua seeds

Ceratonia siliqua seeds for sale in India

Carob tree
Family: Leguminosae
Medicinal use of  Ceratonia siliqua: The pulp in the seedpods of carob is very nutritious and, due to its high sugar content, sweet-tasting and mildly laxative. However, the pulp in the pods is also astringent and, used in a decoction, will treat diarrhoea and gently help to cleanse and also relieve irritation within the gut. Whilst these appear to be contradictory effects, carob is an example of how the body responds to herbal medicines in different ways, according to how the herb is prepared and according to the specific medical problem.

Propgation details:

The seedpods are also used in the treatment of coughs. A flour made from the ripe seedpods is
demulcent and emollient. It is used in the treatment of diarrhoea. The seed husks are astringent
and purgative. The bark is strongly astringent. A decoction is used in the treatment of diarrhoea.

Edible parts of Ceratonia siliqua : Seedpods - raw or ground into a powder. The seedpods are filled with a saccharine  pulp and can be eaten both green or dried. They are very sweet but fibrous, the pulp can be used as a  chocolate substitute in cakes, drinks etc. It is rich in sugars and protein. The pods contain about  55% sugars, 10% protein and 6% fat. Seed - rich in protein. A flour is made from them which is  60% protein, it is free from sugar and starch and is suitable for baking. It can be used as a  chocolate substitute. An edible gum is extracted from the seed, a substitute for Gum Tragacanth
(see Astragalus species). A stabilizer and thickening agent, it is also used as an egg substitute.
The roasted seed is a coffee substitute.

Cross LOC Trade in Kashmir

10 kg cocaine recovered from cross LOC trade truck

While claiming that the Rs. 10 crore worth cocaine consignment, seized from a truck across the LoC Hizbul Mujahideen, the Jammu and Kashmir Police have arrested an alleged operative of the militant outfit from the capital city on Friday. in Baramulla district, had been smuggled in for

The North Kashmir Deputy Inspector General of Police J.P. Singh confirmed the Baramulla Police operation and told The Hindu that one Shehzad was picked up from Fruit Mandi area of Srinagar. “Driver of the seized truck Abdul Ahad of Mawar, Handwara, revealed during sustained questioning that the cocaine consignment was for Hizbul Mujahideen’s Shehzad. We got him to Srinagar to call Shehzad to Parimpora. As soon as Shehzad reached the given spot, we took him into custody”, DIG Singh said.

Mr. Singh claimed that Shehzad was an “overground militant operative closely linked to Hizbul Mujahideen’s top brass in Pakistan and Jammu and Kashmir”. “He admitted to being the importer of the cocaine consignment but maintained during the preliminary questioning that the contraband was supposed to be delivered to another operative whose particulars would be communicated by the organisation from Pakistan”, Mr. Singh said.

Case FIR number 47 under section 6 of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act has been registered at Police Station Sheri in Baramulla district. Shehzad’s antecedents and background could not be verified immediately from independent sources.

Nine packets of cocaine, each weighing one kilo and valued at Rs. 10 crore in international drug markets, had been seized from a cross-LoC trade truck earlier on Friday. Entire fleet of the trucks that had gone across the LoC to the Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir’s Trade Facilitation Centre at Chakoti to deliver goods on Thursday, was intercepted and thoroughly checked at a barricade on Baramulla-Uri Road on Friday.

The DIG said police had received information about the possibility of smuggling of drugs and arms through three particular trucks. He said that the contraband was seized from a truck bearing registration number JK02F-0127. It had been concealed in a tyre in the tool box of the vehicle that had carried a load of bananas from Srinagar to Chakoti.

The barter trade of over two dozen listed items operates for four days a week through Uri in Baramulla district of Kashmir valley and Chakan-Da-Bagh in Poonch district of Jammu. As a significant feature of the confidence building measures between India and Pakistan, the cross-LoC trade has been in operation since October 21, 2008. Cross-LoC travel had been resumed after 57 years in April 2005.

While as the PoK government has set up the TFC at Chakoti for delivery of the goods imported from Srinagar, the J&K government has a similar facility at Salambad, short of the Aman Sethu bridge, the zero-line on LoC in Uri. Goods imported from Muzaffarabad are delivered there for trans-shipment to Srinagar and Baramulla.

Even as some prohibited items, including rounds of ammunition and Pakistani SIM cards have been recovered from some vehicles and passengers in Jammu, it is for the first time in the last five years of the cross-LoC trade that a sizable quantity of cocaine has been allegedly smuggled in and seized.

Attack On 'Dr. Sheikh Jalal' Inhuman

Sir Dr. Sheikh JALAL
By: ABUL HAQ
Forces of terror are raising their ugly head in the Kashmir valley all over again; however there has been a major shift in their strategy. Militants no longer go after poor villagers of remote areas; they have little use of such people since only a mass scale operation in rural areas creates the desired impact and such an operation has become difficult in view of the reduced strength of their groups, their limited personal capability and the enhanced vigilance of the people. What militants now look for is lucrative targets in urban areas; a police post that is thinly guarded and an eminent personality are considered to be the most rewarding hits.

It is against this backdrop that the strike on the eminent cardiologist and former Director SKIMS, Dr Sheikh Jalal-ud-din has to be seen. The Doctor is a respected member of the Kashmiri society, known for the years of self less service that he has rendered to the state, his community and humanity in general. Like other intellectuals of his calibre he also would have been quite lax so far as his security is concerned considering it to be an unnecessary appendage; after all, who would want to kill a person who has only saved lives and not harmed even a fly. The good doctor has for many long years of his life remained cocooned within the folds of his noble profession; he had no enemies to be afraid of. It is these very qualities of the doctor that converted him into a prime target for the evil forces.

A few days of reconnaissance would have created the opportunity to go for the attack, the militant were quite certain that an escape route was easily available. It is the escape route that is most important for the modern militant who values his life more than anything else. If this was not the case he would go for a fidayeen attack on some military post or some big well guarded political leader, but that would have meant certain death. Going for a soft, harmless target like Dr Jalal-ud-din fulfilled his sadistic impulses and personal security requirements; above all, the necessary impact would be there for all to see and the security forces would be seen as incapable and inefficient.

It was sheer providence that Dr Jalal-ud-Din Survived the attack even though his two security guards were not as lucky. It would be difficult to ascertain the complete sequence of events but it can be said with a reasonable amount of certainty that the brave policemen performed their duty to the hilt and managed to keep their charge relatively safe while taking the brunt of the attack on themselves. Thus the evil plan of the militants got thwarted What is most distressing is that the militant cadre has lost the very religious sanctity on the basis of which they launched their so-called Jihad in the Kashmir valley. Why otherwise would they attack another Muslim old enough to be their father in the holy month of Ramadan? Would Dr Jalal have expected in his wildest dreams that something like this would happen to him at this point in time? What enmity did these killers have with the person of Dr Sheikh
Jalal and why in the process did they take the lives of two innocent soldiers? The conclusion that can be drawn from this unfortunate incident is that the militant movement in Jammu and Kashmir has completely lost out on its religious and ideological moorings and has become the den of common criminals bent upon creating mayhem with the demented view that they would be able to brow beat the State, its people and the security forces into submission. In other words, they carry a wholly warped view of their importance and capability. The only solution is to hunt down these rats as soon as possible and rid the region from the menace once and for all. One small step taken in unison would produce the desired results.

One would like to bid a speedy recovery to Dr Jalal-ud-din as would millions of others, the entire sadistic and irreligious incident only goes to prove that God Almighty stands by his own.
