Latest Human rights situation in Kashmir

Srinagar: Palhalan, nearly 30 km away from the Srinagar city on the Srinagar-Baramulla national highway in Pattan constituency of Baramulla district is a picturesque area having a cluster of villages and apple orchards and serene atmosphere, cogent enough to draw one to poetry praising nature for its creativity and piety. However, unfortunately the fairy tale feeling vanishes off as soon as one enters a house or interacts with any local of that area. The region has known nothing but killings and mayhem. There will hardly be a family which must have not suffered any loss in the form of their dear ones or property during the ongoing struggle, for the last two decades. As such, on the account of the ongoing and lingering Kashmir conflict humanity has been dealt hard blows over here. One simply feels pathetic, miserable, gasped and suffocated when one enters one of the worst pain stricken and browbeaten area (Palhalan). Palhalan over past 25 years of the struggle against oppressed occupation has seen the worst tragedies and has been reduced to a concentration camp. With every family having lost a son, a father, a brother, a sister, a daughter, a mother and what not. Getting beaten up by the security agencies, being called for questioning, detaining without reason, and much more by the security agencies is the order of the day at Palhalan.

It is worth mentioning here that the recently martyred brave hero of Kashmir (Mufti Hilal) also hailed from the same area. As soon as one meets his family, one can’t do anything but burst into tears and cries, such is the saga of pain and agony and it is not the only family nor is the first one in the area, which has such deep gashes in the bosom.

Pertinently, J&K Police on its part had stated that Hilal Molvi (Mufti Hilal) of LeT was martyred in an encounter with the police in Narparistan (Fateh Kadal) area of old Srinagar city. But, as per the family members the veracity of the police version about the encounter is doubtful rather concocted and engineered. They also allege that it actually was the torture and brutality of the security agencies that forced Hilal into militancy.

Hilal’s father, Mr.Ali Mohammad Rather states in a painful note–“We doubt the veracity of encounter as a dozen bullets were pumped in his chest alone. During these months our house was continuously raided and we were mentally harassed .My world has finished due to Hilal’s martyrdom. Both me and his mother are in great distress.” Rather further states that the torture and suppression forced his son into militancy. “My son was a learned scholar and his only crime was that he dared to tell the truth in the mosques and aware people about the great teachings of Islam. He was a learned Mufti (Islamic Scholar) and had studied in Gujarat and Deoband in this regard. The oppressive system in our part of the world believes in silencing with the use of brute force those voices which propagate the real teachings of our great religion ‘Islam’ and similarly Hilal was also harassed by security agencies for propagating the truth,” states Ali Mohammad Rather.

On the other part his mother who always keeps shedding tears for his son is in a state of deep shock. “My son believed in telling truth and has been martyred for the same. His power of his knowledge irked the Indian oppressors and they brutally silenced his truthful voice,” states his mother.

According to his family, two Public Safety Acts were slapped on him resulting in him being in prison for more than 21 months. His brother and Uncle are also shattered and depressed to the core. They state that with Hilal’s martyrdom their world has been shattered. His father sums up the pain of Palhallan in these words- “Telling truth in Kashmir is a grave crime and we the people of Palhallan are annihilated and killed for telling and upholding the truth.”

Ground analysis suggests that suffocating scenario of Palhallan needs to be pondered upon in a thought provoking manner. (Kashmir Media Watch)

Kashmir is fighting for Right to Self Determination

Egypt and Kashmir

To draw a comparison between the two would be a fallacy
Burhan Majid

After Tunisia, Egypt is the buzzword. Indeed Egyptian people deserve applause. They have shown the world that how dedication and collective endeavour can bring a revolution. Even as the Egypt’s future remains to be precarious, a thirty year old dictatorship had fallen, reports Burhan Majid.

Though this major political development has its impact on the world politics, unfortunately, a section of people has surfaced, both within and outside, which drew parallels between Egypt and Kashmir, a Himalayan valley. Infact their argument is that Kashmiris should learn from the Egyptians.

To me it is a flawed argument, sufficient enough to add insult to the injury. The courage shown by Egyptian is worth inspiring, however, in no possible way can we draw a similarity between the recent protests in Egypt which toppled a regime and the struggle Kashmir is involved. If we do so, we delude our people.

At the first instance, Kashmir is fighting for Right to Self Determination; the Egyptian people want the change of regime that has been governing them for past thirty years. There is a world of difference between the two. In Egypt protests are related to governance and economy. In Kashmir the case is entirely different. Kashmir is a geopolitical issue. The world saw a sea of people at Tahrir Square (Egypt) for consecutive eighteen days. Can we think of same gathering for the same duration at Red Square (Lal Chowk) in Kashmir where at times people are not allowed to assemble for a peaceful demonstration? Where, last year alone, 112 youth fell to bullets while protesting against the atrocities committed by Indian forces and local police; where children as young as eight are killed mercilessly.

Another significant difference is that the protests in Egypt were given a widespread coverage by international media. Major media houses of the world ran the news about Egypt minute after minute. Live updates, videos photographs, debates, analysis and opinions were broadcasted. On the other hand, Kashmir is seldom talked or debated in the international media circles.

Though Indian media reported the events in Kashmir however the intention was only to malign the cause of Kashmiris and to label the genuine protestors as terrorists, paid agents and what have you. It was after so many killings that Kashmir was discussed and debated in Indian media circles.

The protests in Egypt were gaining momentum, the coverage by the media across the length and breadth of the world also intensified.  The BBC, CNN, New York Times, Guardian and many other international media outlet continuously reported about the situation unfolding in Egypt. Who voiced the voice of Kashmiris at the time of unrest?

Leave alone the question of international media as the agitation gained ground in Kashmir, the local electronic media was gagged and it continue to be till date.

Moreover, according to the media reports, Egyptian Army exercised maximum restraint while dealing with the protestors. Look at the way police and security agencies used power to crush the people and protestors.
Egyptians acknowledged that social networking websites played an important role in accomplishing the goal of ousting Hosni Mubarak. Though social media wasn’t the cause of revolution in Egypt, it hastened its pace and transferred the voice from one to millions.

In Kashmir, the youth tried to use the facebook in the similar fashion; tried to highlight the atrocities committed upon hapless people; but, they were arrested and few were charged under criminal offences.  SMS were banned. The service is yet to be restored for prepaid customers after ‘normalcy’ returned. The bottom-line is that the two are different and to draw comparison is fallacious.

Death toll 79 : 4 more innocent youth martyred in occupied Kashmir

Srinagar, Sep. 06 :  Indian troops and police personnel in their fresh acts of state terrorism martyred four more innocent Kashmiri youth in Kupwara and Pattan areas.

The troops martyred three youth at Afroda in Handwara area of Kupwara during a siege and search operation, which continued till last reports came in. A 15-year-old boy was martyred when the police personnel fired on a group of youth at Palhalan in Pattan.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of All Parties Hurriyet Conference, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq in a statement issued in Srinagar urged India to release all the illegally detained innocent Kashmiris before Eid-ul Fitr. He appealed to the world human rights organisations to send their teams to take cognisance of the miserable plight of the detainees at different jails in and outside the territory.

Senior Hurriyet leaders, Syed Ali Gilani and Agha Syed Hassan Al-Moosvi, in their separate statements in Srinagar strongly condemning the recent suicide attacks in Pakistan expressed deep grief and shock at the loss of life in these attacks and sympathy with the families of the victims. They said that the suicide bombings were the handiwork of the forces that wanted to destabilize the country.

The Chairman of JKLF-R, Farooq Ahmed Dar, in his statement said that India would not be able to suppress Kashmiris’ liberation struggle by resorting to brute force.

A delegation of Al-Ghani Welfare Educational Trust visited different hospitals in Srinagar and enquired about the health of the people who were injured by Indian police and troops during the ongoing uprising in the territory.

Kashmiris ask India to withdraw troops

Srinagar, August 28 : The All Parties Hurriyet Conference Chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and veteran Kashmiri Hurriyet leader, Syed Ali Gilani, leading big demonstrations in Srinagar, today, asked India to withdraw its troops from occupied Kashmir. The APHC Chairman before participating in a procession from Jamia Masjid to Naqashband Sahib, where a sit-in was staged, addressed Juma congregation.

He urged India to stop state terrorism in the occupied territory and take steps to settle the Kashmir dispute by holding talks with Pakistan and genuine Kashmiri leadership.

Syed Ali Gilani led a big protest in Hyderpora and addressing a gathering on the occasion pointed out that the people of Kashmir had been rendering sacrifices to secure their inalienable right to self-determination and not for perks and privileges.

APHC leaders, Agha Syed Hassan Al-Moosvi, addressing protesters in Badgam and Ghulam Ahmed Mir in Thanamandi emphasised that India would not be able to subdue Kashmiris’ movement through force. Anti-India demonstrations were also staged at Lal Chowk, Soura, Buchpora and Residency Road in Srinagar and in Islamabad, Bijbehara, Sangam, Pulwama, Tral and other towns. Liberation leaders addressing the demonstrators urged India to show seriousness in resolving the dispute in accordance with the Kashmiris’ aspirations.

Illegally detained senior APHC leader, Shabbir Ahmad Shah talking to mediamen at a hospital in Jammu said that the present surge in the liberation struggle had unnerved Indian authorities, who were engaged in a genocidal spree in the occupied territory. The authorities had brought him there for medical check-up.

The Executive Director of Kashmir Centre London, Professor Nazir Ahmad Shawl, in a statement in Islamabad said that resolution of the Kashmir dispute was vital to the peace and stability in South Asia. Kashmiri intellectual and lecturer in Delhi University, Syed Abdur Rehman Gilani in a media interview in Bangalore said that the people of Jammu and Kashmir should be given an opportunity to decide their future themselves.

On the other hand, the 43rd death anniversary of prominent Kashmiri liberation leader and religious scholar, Mirwaiz Muhammad Yousaf Shah will be observed, tomorrow, and special functions will be held on the occasion on both sides of the Line of Control.

Meanwhile, China has refused visa to a serving Indian army general, B. S. Jaswal, on the ground that he is the incharge of the Indian forces in occupied Kashmir. China has been describing Jammu and Kashmir as a disputed territory. (Writer-South Asia)
