Red alert in Srinagar

Buy Balloon Vine seed
Jammu and Kashmir Police Saturday sounded an alert after several cases of motorcycle thefts were reported from various parts of the Jammu and Kashmir's summer capital - Srinagar.

"Police have started investigations into bike lifting cases that have occurred in the past few days in Srinagar. Four bikes were reported to have been stolen from different places in the city," a police spokesman said.

Security agencies are looking into the possibility of militants having stolen the motorcycles for use in subversive activities, police sources said.

In the past, militants have used stolen bikes to carry out attacks on security forces in Srinagar and elsewhere in the valley.

The attack on an army convoy at Hyderpora here on June 24 which left eight soldiers dead and several others injured was also carried out using a motorcycle snatched by militants from two students in a nearby locality, the sources said.

The common pattern in the four theft cases reported over the past few days is that all the stolen bikes are at least 13 years old. (PTI)

Attack On 'Dr. Sheikh Jalal' Inhuman

Sir Dr. Sheikh JALAL
By: ABUL HAQ
Forces of terror are raising their ugly head in the Kashmir valley all over again; however there has been a major shift in their strategy. Militants no longer go after poor villagers of remote areas; they have little use of such people since only a mass scale operation in rural areas creates the desired impact and such an operation has become difficult in view of the reduced strength of their groups, their limited personal capability and the enhanced vigilance of the people. What militants now look for is lucrative targets in urban areas; a police post that is thinly guarded and an eminent personality are considered to be the most rewarding hits.

It is against this backdrop that the strike on the eminent cardiologist and former Director SKIMS, Dr Sheikh Jalal-ud-din has to be seen. The Doctor is a respected member of the Kashmiri society, known for the years of self less service that he has rendered to the state, his community and humanity in general. Like other intellectuals of his calibre he also would have been quite lax so far as his security is concerned considering it to be an unnecessary appendage; after all, who would want to kill a person who has only saved lives and not harmed even a fly. The good doctor has for many long years of his life remained cocooned within the folds of his noble profession; he had no enemies to be afraid of. It is these very qualities of the doctor that converted him into a prime target for the evil forces.

A few days of reconnaissance would have created the opportunity to go for the attack, the militant were quite certain that an escape route was easily available. It is the escape route that is most important for the modern militant who values his life more than anything else. If this was not the case he would go for a fidayeen attack on some military post or some big well guarded political leader, but that would have meant certain death. Going for a soft, harmless target like Dr Jalal-ud-din fulfilled his sadistic impulses and personal security requirements; above all, the necessary impact would be there for all to see and the security forces would be seen as incapable and inefficient.

It was sheer providence that Dr Jalal-ud-Din Survived the attack even though his two security guards were not as lucky. It would be difficult to ascertain the complete sequence of events but it can be said with a reasonable amount of certainty that the brave policemen performed their duty to the hilt and managed to keep their charge relatively safe while taking the brunt of the attack on themselves. Thus the evil plan of the militants got thwarted What is most distressing is that the militant cadre has lost the very religious sanctity on the basis of which they launched their so-called Jihad in the Kashmir valley. Why otherwise would they attack another Muslim old enough to be their father in the holy month of Ramadan? Would Dr Jalal have expected in his wildest dreams that something like this would happen to him at this point in time? What enmity did these killers have with the person of Dr Sheikh
Jalal and why in the process did they take the lives of two innocent soldiers? The conclusion that can be drawn from this unfortunate incident is that the militant movement in Jammu and Kashmir has completely lost out on its religious and ideological moorings and has become the den of common criminals bent upon creating mayhem with the demented view that they would be able to brow beat the State, its people and the security forces into submission. In other words, they carry a wholly warped view of their importance and capability. The only solution is to hunt down these rats as soon as possible and rid the region from the menace once and for all. One small step taken in unison would produce the desired results.

One would like to bid a speedy recovery to Dr Jalal-ud-din as would millions of others, the entire sadistic and irreligious incident only goes to prove that God Almighty stands by his own.

Terror strikes in Kashmir : Kashmir loses a poor man’s doctor in Jalal’s demise

Dr. Sheikh Jalal a well-known cardiologist was cast for a role at the international level and had he opted for New Delhi he would have earned bigger laurels as a medical scientist. But he preferred Kashmir to a bigger role at the national level. However, the state lost a doctor who treated the poor. He died after a month-long battle in the AIIMs in New Delhi.

Dr Sheikh Jalal, who was loved by the senior faculty members at the AIIMS when he was simply a student undergoing postgraduate courses in cardiology, opted for his homeland, Pampore-Srinagar simply to serve people in the valley. And for about three decades he served people, irrespective of their creed, cast, region or economic status.

Yes, a number of intellectuals, academicians, poets, writers, journalists, doctors and political leaders have lost their lives in the 23-year long militancy related violence but the valley may not be able to bear the loss it has suffered in the death of Dr Sheikh Jalal.

Dr. Sheikh Jalal died on Saturday at All India Institute of Medical Sciences a month after he was critically injured in a terror attack at his hometown of Pampore in Kashmir. Terrorists  attacked him and his gunmen on July 18, in which two security men were killed on the spot and Dr Sheikh  Jalal received serious injuries.

Hospital administration sources at AIIMS confirmed Dr. Sheikh Jalal's death and said that his post mortem was being conducted by a team of doctors. His body would be flown to Srinagar for funeral rites by an afternoon flight even as some J&K Government officials were trying to arrange a special air carrier.

Formerly Director of SKIMS tertiary care hospital and Head of Cardiology department Dr. Sheikh Jalal had been attacked by suspected terrorists near his ancestral home in Dr. Sheikh JALAL's street, Pampore on July 18. Both of his personal security guards had died in the broad daylight attack.

Dr Sheikh Jalal, was a down-to-earth more of a human being than a medical practitioner. Money was never his love and had it been the case he would have become a multi-millionaire during the his 45 year long active service. One has yet to see a son as dutiful as Dr Jalal who preferred to be by the side of his mother, a widow, to earning laurels as a cardiologist in New Delhi.

Son of a Pampore Dr Sheikh Jalal
had achieved eminence by his caliber as a cardiologist. And those patients from Jammu and Kashmir who would visit New Delhi or Chandigarh for treatment to their heart ailments would usually refer those patients back to Dr Sheikh Jalal.

People and politicians in the valley had complete trust in his expertise as a cardiologist. Had it not been the case Sheikh Abdullah would have not opted for Dr Sheikh Jalal’s opinion when he (Sheikh) fell ill in August-September 1982. Dr Sheikh  Jalal spent a number of weeks in the house located behind the Nedous Hotel on the Maulana Azad Road in Srinagar tending to the ailing leader. Though some of the eminent cardiologists from New Delhi and other parts of the country had visited the Sheikh they prescribed medicines only after seeking opinion from Dr Sheikh  Jalal.

Unfortunately he had become victim of what one would call “dirty political intrigues within Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences, Soura,Srinagar, where he joined as a cardiologist and rose to become its Director. I have not been able to fathom the reason for being in the centre of one controversy or the other. He was a doctor,a gantleman who was misunderstood by his colleagues, by political leaders and never by patients.

Dr Sheikh Jalal had many interesting anecdotes to say.One pertained to a senior doctor in the AIIMS. .One eminent surgeon, Dr Atma Prakash, had t aken ill during the middle of a night. He used to reside within the faculty complex of the AIIMS. Since he had faith in Dr Sheikh  Jalal Atma Prakash called for the young doctor. Dr Sheikh Jalal administered all medicines that were required to revive his heart. But he died in the morning.

Whe his body was being carried to the cremation ground Dr Sheikh Jalal was one among a big group of mourners accompanying the body. A couple of sleuths of an Indian intelligence agency, who also accompanied the body, were heard by Jalal asking each other “why Atma Prakash had summoned a muslim when there were other senior doctors available for help ?” They went even to the extent of smelling some mischief from Dr Sheikh Jalal.

Alas! Dr  Sheikh  Jalal survived that incident but could not save himself from the bullets of terrorist. His death is a big loss to his wife, mother and children but a bigger loss to the people of Kashmir.

What could have been the reason for unidentified terrrorist to attak Dr Sheikh Jalal ? He was highly gullible. He placed trust in everybody and would open his heart before strangers too.

His mother would be waiting for her son to get up and have “namkeen chai”(tea added with salt and milk) and chappati made of maize flour for his breakfast. Personally I believe that Dr Sheikh  Jalal was a symbol of a man of simple living and high thinking. He did not move out of of Pampore and settle somewhere in Srinagar when he had the option. He had no love for comforts and that is why rustic life suited him.But the gunmen thought otherwise. Peace be to his soul. (KIP)

India's eminent cardiologist Dr. Sheikh JALAL

Dr. Sheikh JALAL
Another doctor fell to bullets. A sympathetic   note followed from the authorities, but as usual no Ex- director of SKIMS, an ex-head of the department and a doctor who was engaged in  care  of Kashmiri patients….Almost two decades back the bullets hit another doctor of SKIMS, another head of the department, a bold surgeon, a conceiver, a visionary and a humble human being-Prof.Abdul  Ahad Guru. He was murdered for a crime that each one of us committed those days-asking for something that was denied to us for ages. His murder was wrapped under the thick black quilt of “murder by un-identified gunmen.” No one spoke for the justice to the victim or to his family. A young boy lost his father, a woman lost her husband and Kashmir lost an able son. No probes, no inquiries and the matter stood forgotten. probes and no inquiries. In a few weeks from now   the matter will be forgotten. This   time it was an

The fear that gripped the community of doctors was so much that Dr.Guru was never remembered   on his death anniversary, never was a lecture delivered in his honor, and never was a stone erected in his memory in the very premises of the college he conceived. No medical associations of the state, country or the world-talked about Dr.Guru….ever.-

Years went by , a  loyal bureaucrat  of Government of India  who has played long innings in Kashmir came out  with the stunning revelation in his book ‘My Kashmir’ about the truth regarding the murder of Dr. Guru. He named those who were responsible for the dastardly act, he named the real men behind the scene  as he removed the dark quilt from the dark scene. A late revelation-  nonetheless informative. No one yet again after these facts which exposed the authorities   came to the surface- spoke about justice to the victim. The family   had possibly reconciled to their fate as the actual murderer had been eliminated.

Another great doctor fell to the bullets almost within the premises of the hospital he worked in. Dr Farooq Ashai   served as Medical Superintendent and a head of the department in Bone and joint hospital Barzulla. He was on his way to his hospital when he   was shot at. A talented man, a versatile doctor, a competent orthopedician, a loving teacher was silenced forever. Who killed him, why   and how- was never revealed. His wife who intubated her own husband with the hope to revive him in the very theatres where he had revived thousands –is waiting   even today for the justice to her husband. But will she ever get it in this dark valley? And we all have maintained silence- out of fear or out of callousness –regretfully so.

A little less known than these doctors was a gentle Professor of surgey at SMHS hospital Dr. MS Malik. The humble Professor was crushed   by Forces vehicle in Lal Chowk. No probes, no punishments and no inquiries. They were not bothered and we too continued with our lives.
Another doctor who dared to enter into the world of politics –Dr.Lone was mysteriously killed to satisfy someone’s thirst   for a doctor’s   blood. His friends   in political circles never asked for a probe into his death. Here too a doctor was a victim.

Well a survivor she is-thankfully , Dr. Girja Dhar one of the boldest principals of GMC Srinagar who held it together when it was all set to be doomed, faced a shower of bullets - a horrifying incident that went unaccounted, un-probed. The attempt on the   life of a high profile public servant did not evoke a condemnation from any quarter.

Doctors have borne the odds, suffered but   delivered amidst   crises in this conflict zone. But these witnesses’ of genocides are being hit and no one it seems is bothered. From Dr.Guru to Dr.Ashai, Dr.Malik to Dr. Sheikh Jalal-these were the doctors who stayed back in trouble torn valley to treat patients. Their families had invested in them   and their patients had trust in them. Why won’t someone tell us why they were killed?

What about the national and international health organizations and associations? These agencies busy with celebrating Malala days are maintaining a criminal silence over the death of our Messiah’s-Why?

It is a pain to be born in Kashmir-and more painful to be a practicing doctor witnessing death in all forms. The stress under which a doctor works here is tortuous   and the risk to life and honor is tremendous. If a doctor braving it all cannot be protected-then where should doctors seek asylum and where will the poor patients go?

This may not be the entire tale of doctors working in Kashmir and dying at the hands of unknown and unidentified men-I hope to talk more elaborately in my book “Whiteman in Dark”-till then I dare to condemn the attacks  on life and honor of doctors of Kashmir (Greater Kashmir)

Dr. Sheikh Jalal in AIIMS, New Delhi

Dr. S. Jalal
He never linked himself with any political party....his only aim was to fullfill his fathers wish.... to serve d nation of Kashmir. His father  Haji Sheikh Ghulam Nabi had told him to serve d nation n i.e what he was doing...now see what gift this nation gave him he never charged a single penny to people for his services when he was in SKIMS n associated hospitals. True asset of valley. May Allah bless him.
Saleem Shah, Srinagar

Dr Sheikh Jalal to be flown to AIIMS today

Dr. Sheikh Jalal
Srinagar : Not accepting the police claims that Dr Sheikh Jalal Ud Din was not the target of ‘militants’, the family of  Dr. Sheikh Jalal is still apprehensive of possible attack on the ailing doctor. The family according to sources has decided to take him out of state for further treatment apparently because of ‘security reasons’.

Meanwhile, an air ambulance has been arranged to carry Dr Sheikh Jalal for specialized treatment at AIIMS Delhi today.

Comparatively stable after being operated second time on Friday, doctors are hopeful of his survival.

The doctors treating Dr Sheikh  Jalal said he is responding to medication and is stable.
Dr Sheikh Jalal is stable but his family wants to take him outside for security reasons,” said a doctor wishing not to be named.

“They fear for another possible attack on the doctor,” he added. Dr Sheikh Jalal, a renowned cardiologist and former director of SKIMS was shot along with his two personal security guards by some unidentified person at his ancestral home in Namlabal Pampore. Police claims attack was carried out by militants. The two guards later succumbed to their injuries leaving Dr Sheikh Jalal critically wounded. He was rushed to SKIMS where he is being treated presently.

Immediately after the incident, a team of experts at SKIMS operated upon his brain and abdomen, but he is said to have lost his left eye as bullet has pierced the eye. According to doctors they are not sure whether he would be able to see with his right eye.

The preliminary report of police investigation hinted that Dr Sheikh Jalal was not the target of the militant attack, but it was aimed at his security guards. The two policemen were killed in the attack and the rifle of one of them was snatched.

“It seems that Dr Sheikh Jalal became collateral damage,” said a police officer. “We are investigating whether it was a chance encounter or not,” he added.

Dr Sheikh Jalal

Dr Sheikh Jalal
Dr Sheikh Jalal, a leading cardiologist of South asia, was seriously injured in a militant ambush that left his two police guards dead.

A senior police officer said militants fired at the vehicle of Dr Jalal near Shaheed-e-Azemat Road, Namblabal Pampore in south Kashmir Pulwama district on Thursday afternoon.

“Dr Jalal was seriously injured in the militant attack and has been shifted to hospital for treatment while his two police guards were killed on the spot,” the officer said.

Dr Sheikh Jalal an eminent cardiologist had headed the cardiology department of the states only tertiary medical facility, Soura medical institute for a long time and had been its director for some time.

After his retirement Dr Jalal has been doing private practice in capital Srinagar.

He belonged to the south Kashmir Pulwama district but is presently living in capital Srinagar. He had been provided security by the government.

No militant outfit has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.

Police, assisted by security forces, have cordoned off the area and a hunt has been launched to nab the assailants, police said.

The attack comes a day after a top Hizbul Mujahideen militant was killed in a grenade explosion at Batmaloo in central Srinagar while he was being shifted to Baramulla district jail in a police vehicle.

Police blamed militants for the attack, but Hizbul Mujahideen accused the cops of stage managing the attack to eliminate Shakeel Ahmad Kasana, who was arrested last year.

Hizbul spokesman Baliguddin told a local news gathering agency that the outfit will carry out attacks to avenge Kasana's death.
