Srinagar : The Jammu and Kashmir High Court Bar Association has called for a two day Kashmir Bandh beginning tommorow. Accarding to a spokesman of the Bar, the call has been given to mark protest against the alleged custodial killing of top ex-militant commander Mr. Abdul Qayoom Ganai in Pampore. The International organisation viz Amnesty International and Asia Watach have been called upon to use their good offices to shop such killings in Kashmir.

As the body of the deceased reached his home town in Nambalbal, Pampore, thousands of people including women and children defying  restrictions staged massive pro-freedom and anti-India demonstrations. Later, thousands participated in the Nimaz-e-Jinazah of  Abdul Qayoom Ganai and his body was laid to rest in the local graveyard early morning. (Writer-South Asia)

JKPL URGES UN, INTERNATIONAL COURT OF JUSTICE

Srinagar, Oct 16: The Chairman of  Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Leauge (JKPL) Sheikh Yaqoob on Thursday urged the International Court of Justice and United Nations War Crimes Tribunal to initiate a probe into the unmarked and mass graves in the disputed state of Kashmir.

Sheikh Yaqoob   said during the past over two decades nearly 10,000 Kashmiris went missing in the custody of various agencies. “Unmarked and mass graves have been found in various areas of the Valley. We believe that most of the Kashmiris who have been subjected to enforced disappearance are buried in these unmarked and mass graves. We make a fervent appeal to the International Court of Justice and United Nations War Crimes Tribunal to send their teams to the Valley and initiate a through probe into the unmarked graves for unmasking the perpetrators and putting an end to killing of innocent Kashmiris,” Sheikh Yaqoob said.

Citing example of extra-judicial executions, Sheikh Yaqoob said in 2006, five people mostly from south Kashmir’s Islamabad district were killed in a fake encounter in Ganderbal for rewards and promotions by the Special Operations Group of Police and Army.

 “The case is only tip-of an ice-berg. In past two decades, the troopers turned Kashmir into killings fields by executing Kashmiris and burying their bodies in unmarked graves to suppress the movement for right to self-determination,” Sheikh Yaqoob  said.

Pertinently, last year the International Peoples’ Tribunal on Human Rights and Justice, a rights watchdog in its report ‘Buried Evidence: Unknown, Unmarked, and Mass Graves” had claimed to have to found 2700 unmarked and mass graves containing bodies of 2943 people across, 55 villages in north Kashmir.

“The graves include bodies of extra-judicial, summary and arbitrary executions, as well as massacres by the Indian military and paramilitary forces. Of these graves 2373 (87.9 percent) were unnamed. 154 contained two bodies each and 23 contained more than two bodies. Within these 23 graves, the number of bodies ranged from 3 to 17,” the report had stated.

Sheikh Yaqoob  maintained that panacea for all the problems of Kashmiris’ is demilitarization. “Till the troopers leave the State, Kashmiris will continue suffer, fathers will have to face the painful moment of shouldering coffins of their sons and playfields will turn into graveyards.”

Accusing India of exploiting natural resources of Kashmiris, Sheikh Yaqoob  said the power generated from Kashmir is supplied to other states. “While Kashmiris are left in lurch. Our forests and mountains are also being vandalized by troopers. I want to maintain that Kashmiris will feel sense of security when the troopers vacate the State,” he said. (Writer-South Asia)

Indian Army Chief Visits HQ Northern Command

Jammu, October, 16:  The Chief of Army Staff Gen VK Singh PVSM, AVSM, YSM, ADC accompanied by Mrs Bharti Singh, President Family Welfare Organisation (FWO) arrived at Udhampur after having visited Leh and Srinagar, on the second day of his three day visit to Northern Command. 

The COAS addressed all officers of the Udhampur and Nagrota garrisons and impressed upon them the strengths and core competencies of the Indian Army. He enjoined the officers to inculcate the deepest sense of professionalism  whilst working in the interest of the Nation. He stressed upon the rich traditions and the value system base and emphasised the importance to remain focussed on the job at hand and prepare for all contingencies.

He had a detailed interaction with Lt Gen BS Jaswal, PVSM, AVSM**, VSM GOC-in-C Northern Command and reviewed the security situation in the State.       A lunch was hosted in his honour at the impressive Officer’s Mess, Headquarters Northern Command which was attended by senior officers and their ladies.  He thereafter departed for Nagrota on the last leg of his visit.

Mrs Bharti Singh, President FWO, interacted with wives of all ranks in the forenoon and talked of the high traditions and the dedication of Army wives. (Writer-South Asia)

Crackdown on Kashmir Face Book users

Srinagar, Oct 10: Continuing its crackdown on the facebook users in the Valley, police Sunday arrested a J&K Bank employee from south Kashmir’s Shopian district and slapped Public Safety Act on him. The PSA was also slapped on three more youths hailing from different parts of the township, reports Rissing Kashmir (10/10)

Reports said police has launched a special drive in south Kashmir to gain control over protesters and a list carrying names of dozens of youths, allegedly involved in stone-pelting, has also been prepared.

Police sources said, “After thorough investigations, it was found that a youth Mufti Wajid Yaqoob was influential in organizing protest demonstrations in Shopian through popular social networking site facebook. He was arrested and shifted to Kathua jail.”

Wajid, a resident of Baba Mohalla, Shopian, is working as a relationship executive in J&K Bank branch, Shopian, and with a degree in computer technology, is counted among the intelligent youths of the town.

The arrest and detention of Wajid under PSA has created a wave of anger among the people of Shopian.

Police has also arrested Farooq Ahmad Dar, son of Manzoor Ahmad Dar of Manloo Shopian; Sheeraz Ahmad Mir, son of Abdul Majeed Mir of New Colony Shopian and Ayaar Ahmad, son of Abdul Gani of Pinjoora Shopian. All of them have been sent to Kathua jail after PSA was slapped on them. Locals said all the arrested youths fall around the age-group of 25.

Family members of Wajid said he was arrested outside the bank when he was returning from a nearby mosque after offering Friday prayers.

“At the time of  Wajid’s arrest, protests were going on in the town and police was chasing them away. Police arrested Wajid there only.” they said.

Meanwhile, a youth Adil Ahmad Dar of Gousia Colony, Azad Ganj, Baramulla was arrested by police when he was going for work.

Pertinently, the government had ordered the release of youths detained under PSA in its Unified Headquarters Meeting, held last month. However, arrests have continued both in Srinagar and rural areas of the Valley.

Over 100,000 mental patients in Kashmir: Says report

Srinagar, October 10 : In Kashmir, the number of mental patients in the wake of Indian state and private  terrorism has crossed the one hundred thousand figure, reports KMS (10/10).

This has been revealed in a report issued by the Research Section of Kashmir Media Service on the occasion of World Mental Health Day, today.

The report maintains that bombings, beatings, torture, unjustified arrest and detention, extra-judicial killings, and, Indian troops’ sense of impunity from prosecution, are among the violations recounted and such abuses have affected the local psyche adversely.

The KMS report says that enforced disappearance is one of the most harrowing consequences of the armed conflict in Kashmir and during the last 21 years more than 10,000 people have been subjected to enforced disappearance by the troops. Of the disappeared persons, between 2000-2005 a majority were married males. Although men have been subjected to disappearance largely, but women have been badly affected because of being related to them as daughters, mothers, sisters and wives.
