Dogripora-Wular flood channel : The Silent Guardian of Kashmir"

Dogripora-Wular flood channel

The Dogripora-Wular flood channel is a proposed, not yet constructed, flood control project designed to divert surplus water from the Jhelum River in Dogripora (South Kashmir) to Wular Lake (Bandipora, North Kashmir) to mitigate flooding in the valley. The project has been stuck in the planning and feasibility stages since its inception after the 2014 floods, with various departments studying its technical and socio-economic viability, and preparing the necessary Detailed Project Reports (DPRs).

Project Details
Purpose:
To reduce the severity of Jhelum River floods by creating a new, dedicated channel for flood discharge.

Route:
The proposed channel would run approximately 80 kilometers from Dogripora in South Kashmir to Wular Lake in North Kashmir.

Status:
The project is still in the proposal and planning phases, with no construction underway.

Challenges and Delays
Detailed Project Report (DPR) Issues
:
The project has faced delays due to the inability to complete the detailed project report for several years.

Feasibility Studies
:
Technical and socio-economic feasibility of the project is still being assessed, including studies on its environmental impact.

Funding:
The project is considered a mega project with an estimated cost that may increase after accounting for land acquisition.

Current Efforts
The project is included in the Jhelum Tawi Flood Recovery Project.
Studies are ongoing, with the hope of completing the DPR and moving forward with implementation to protect the region from future devastating floods.
