A species of the herb is found in the deserts of Iran and the mountains of Afganistan, but it is also cultivated in Kashmir. While it's origins are from the Middle East, but over a period of time Heeng has gained immense popularity across India too.

The major supply of asafoetida to India is from Afghanistan and Iran. There are two main varieties of asafoetida ie. Hing Kabuli Sufaid (Milky white asafoetida) and Hing Lal (Red asafoetida).
