Insider’s info on Hyderpora attack can’t be ruled out: J&K Police

Dr. S.Jalal

Militants change strategy, carry out lethal attacks

“Security forces are investigating the possibility of insider’s information about the movement of an Army convoy that was attacked at Hyderpora in Srinagar last month in which eight Army personnel were killed and over a dozen were injured”, a senior police officer said here.

Militants chose an Army vehicle in the convoy with un-armed soldiers for the lethal attack on Hyderpora Bypass, a day before Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh visited Srinagar last month.

“We can’t rule out insider’s information about the particular vehicle of the convoy in which the Army men were without weapons. The attack was targeted at that vehicle only when there were up and down convoys plying on the highway. We are investigating various angles about what led to the targeting of that particular vehicle”, the officer said.

He added that militants have infiltrated into security forces ranks but police have been able to identify and nab them. The officer cited the example of Constable Abdul Rashid Shigan and Sub-Inspector Shiv Kumar Sharma alias Sonu who were working at the behest of the militants and were involved in the militancy related incidents in the State.

“We were able to identify and arrest them. We can’t rule out more infiltrations in police. Such infiltrations do take place in the security force ranks in conflict situations”, the officer said.

The officer said that militants in Kashmir have changed their strategy with the aim to inflict more casualties on security forces and in return incite them for collateral damage that could lead to public anger against the Government and street protests.

“Two police men were killed at point blank range in Hari Singh Street, Srinagar on June 22 in busy market place but we didn’t fire back as it could have caused civilian casualties”, the officer said.

The officer said that such type of provocative attacks where they were expecting collateral damage was Bemina attack on CRPF camp in March this year where children were playing cricket, Hyderpora attack on Army convoy, and attack on Dr. Sheikh Jalal in busy street at Pampore where two police men were killed and the doctor was critically wounded.

“The aim of these attacks at public places was to incite the security forces for collateral damage so as to incite people against the Government and trigger street protests”, the officer said. “But security forces didn’t fell prey to the militant designs and maintained utmost restraint during recent attacks on the security forces”, he added.

The officer said that soon after the attack on Army convoy in Hyderpora, Police directed the Army not to open fire. “We told the senior Army officers that there was no point to fire back as the militants had fled and the firing can only cause civilian casualty”, he added.

The officer said that this year there were more lethal attacks on the security forces in Kashmir valley in which casualty figure on security forces is higher than the previous years.

With the changing strategy of carrying out lethal attacks on security forces, so far 33 security men were killed in militant attacks since March this year. The biggest one being the Hyderpora attack of last month in which 8 Army personnel were killed and over a dozen injured.

Militants in most of these lethal attacks took security forces by surprise. In March 13 this year, 5 CRPF jawans were killed when militants attacked them at Bemina and most of the jawans were without weapons as they were on law and order duty.

In Hygam Sopore, militants on April 26 attacked a police party and killed four police men. The police party had gone to investigate a theft case which militants had faked.

In Tral on May 25, four Army men were killed when militants took them by surprise after trapping them in their drag net.

Ginkgo and Skin condition

HERB HELPS SKIN CONDITION

Up to two percent of the population has vitiligo, a difficult-to-treat skin disorder in which a loss of pigment-producing cells creates white patches on various parts of the body. A recent review of potential natural treatments for vitilago highlights a study using 40 mg of Ginkgo biloba, three times per day for six months. Of those taking ginkgo, disease progression was halted in 80%, and 40% experienced complete repigmentation, compared with only 8% in the placebo group. "Ginkgo’s apparent efficacy without the need for phototherapy – thus eliminating the adverse events inherent with phototherapy make sit a therapeutic option worth investigating," said the authors.

Cutivation of Ginkgo tree

Two recent studies support earlier research on the use of ginkgo for improving cognitive function, particularly in older people with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

Seniors with dementia scored better on memory tests and had other improvements. In the first, researchers from Ukraine enlisted 400 patients with dementia in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, 22-week study. They found that treatment with a gingko biloba extract (240 mg per day) to be associated with improvements in scores for a simple and short test for assessing cognitive impairment of memory and attention (SKT test) and neuropsychiatric symptoms. In addition, care giver distress scores were reduced significantly among care givers of patients in the ginkgo group, as compared to a worsening found among care givers of patients on the placebo. The researchers reported significant differences between the ginkgo and placebo groups in terms of apathy/indifference, anxiety, irritability/lability, depression/dysphoria,and sleep/nighttime behavior. They say the results suggest that supplementing with an extract of gingko biloba may benefit patients with dementia.

In a second study by German researchers, 404 patients with mild to moderate dementia (333 with Alzheimer’s disease and 71 with vascular dementia) supplemented with the same type and dose of gingko biloba extract for a period of 6 months. Similarly, the herb was found to improve cognitive functioning, non-cognitive symptoms, and functional abilities. Patients treated with the gingko had improvements on the SKT cognitive test battery as compared to deterioration or no change inpatients on placebo. Scores on the Neuropsychiatric Inventory (NPI) also improved in patients taking the supplement, compared to either a slight deterioration or only slight improvement in placebo patients. The researchers say that supplementation with gingko may be of benefit to patients with mild to moderate dementia due to either vascular dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.

Walnut plantation/Cultivation of Walnut

WALNUTS SLOW GROWTH OF PROSTATE CANCER

Research in mice by UC Davis shows that walnuts slow the growth of prostate cancer.
Mice fed a diet with walnuts had smaller, slower growing tumors, the researchers reported in the current issue of the British Journal of Nutrition.

A low-fat diet is often recommended for reducing the risk for developing or slowing growth of prostate cancer. However, the UC Davis study suggests that not eating walnuts may be a mistake.
Walnuts are rich in omega-3 polyunsaturated fats, antioxidants and other plant chemicals. Eschewing walnuts may mean foregoing the protective effects of walnuts on tumor growth.

One in six men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer, usually later in life. One in 36 will die from the disease because most tumors do not spread beyond the local site, according to the National Cancer Institute.

“Our findings suggest that eating a diet containing walnuts may slow prostate tumor growth so that the tumor remains inside the prostate capsule,” said Paul Davis, research nutritionist in the Department of Nutrition and researcher with the UC Davis Cancer Center. “If proven applicable in humans, men with prostate cancer could die of other causes — hopefully old age.”

The research was funded by the California Walnut Board, according to a UC Davis Cancer Center press release. Visit The Sacramento Bee (Sacramento, Calif.) at http://www.sacbee.com

e rediscovery of a different variety of seeds from diverse cultures is always an exciting development. Sabja, a type of Tulsi seeds, is well-known in Aryuvedic medicine. These are the seeds of sweet basil, also called Thai Holy Basil, which is different from holy basil, the tulsi plant revered in India.
Native to Asia, particularly Maharashtra in India, sweet basil has been used for thousands of years as a culinary and medicinal herb and is also known for its therapeutic benefits. The seeds resemble the South American Chia seeds and are tiny round black, become gelatinous when soaked in water for about an hour. They form a translucent gel like membrane around each seed, resembling frog eggs. They are used in drinks in Asian countries such as Thailand and desserts such as Arabic falooda or sherbet.
In the past, basil seeds were used to relieve indigestion, sore throat, constipation and diarrhoea. Few studies suggest that the fibre in the mucilaginous layer surrounding the seeds after soaking is responsible for its bilk-forming laxative effect.
Perhaps, the gelatinous texture and high soluble fibre (80 per cent) of the swollen basil seeds helps make a filling drink, which could help curb appetite if consumed before meals. Although research is still in the preliminary stage, basil seeds may help control blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes, according to Sutter Gould Medical Foundation. Keeping blood sugars stable in weight watchers has the potential to help reduce appetite and food cravings.
In Thailand, three published studies have described the use of sweet basil seeds in treating constipation, diabetes and lowering high cholesterol levels. Interestingly, basil seeds are served with sugar syrup during Muslim fasts, to replenish lost nutrients.
In Southeast Asian cuisine, these seeds are often combined with water, sugar, honey and sometimes coconut milk to create sweetened beverages, some of which could be thick with a consistency similar to tapioca. The traditional recipes are high in sugar, which can be replaced by an alternative sweetener to reduce sugar calories. Its distinct texture creates an interesting and nutritious addition to desserts and puddings. Soaked basil seeds can also be added to your favourite juice, tea or sprinkled on top of salads. But do remember to soak them in hot or cold water for about an hour before using. Children and elderly could choke on swollen seeds and should be discouraged from consuming them.

Terror strikes in Kashmir : Kashmir loses a poor man’s doctor in Jalal’s demise

Dr. Sheikh Jalal a well-known cardiologist was cast for a role at the international level and had he opted for New Delhi he would have earned bigger laurels as a medical scientist. But he preferred Kashmir to a bigger role at the national level. However, the state lost a doctor who treated the poor. He died after a month-long battle in the AIIMs in New Delhi.

Dr Sheikh Jalal, who was loved by the senior faculty members at the AIIMS when he was simply a student undergoing postgraduate courses in cardiology, opted for his homeland, Pampore-Srinagar simply to serve people in the valley. And for about three decades he served people, irrespective of their creed, cast, region or economic status.

Yes, a number of intellectuals, academicians, poets, writers, journalists, doctors and political leaders have lost their lives in the 23-year long militancy related violence but the valley may not be able to bear the loss it has suffered in the death of Dr Sheikh Jalal.

Dr. Sheikh Jalal died on Saturday at All India Institute of Medical Sciences a month after he was critically injured in a terror attack at his hometown of Pampore in Kashmir. Terrorists  attacked him and his gunmen on July 18, in which two security men were killed on the spot and Dr Sheikh  Jalal received serious injuries.

Hospital administration sources at AIIMS confirmed Dr. Sheikh Jalal's death and said that his post mortem was being conducted by a team of doctors. His body would be flown to Srinagar for funeral rites by an afternoon flight even as some J&K Government officials were trying to arrange a special air carrier.

Formerly Director of SKIMS tertiary care hospital and Head of Cardiology department Dr. Sheikh Jalal had been attacked by suspected terrorists near his ancestral home in Dr. Sheikh JALAL's street, Pampore on July 18. Both of his personal security guards had died in the broad daylight attack.

Dr Sheikh Jalal, was a down-to-earth more of a human being than a medical practitioner. Money was never his love and had it been the case he would have become a multi-millionaire during the his 45 year long active service. One has yet to see a son as dutiful as Dr Jalal who preferred to be by the side of his mother, a widow, to earning laurels as a cardiologist in New Delhi.

Son of a Pampore Dr Sheikh Jalal
had achieved eminence by his caliber as a cardiologist. And those patients from Jammu and Kashmir who would visit New Delhi or Chandigarh for treatment to their heart ailments would usually refer those patients back to Dr Sheikh Jalal.

People and politicians in the valley had complete trust in his expertise as a cardiologist. Had it not been the case Sheikh Abdullah would have not opted for Dr Sheikh Jalal’s opinion when he (Sheikh) fell ill in August-September 1982. Dr Sheikh  Jalal spent a number of weeks in the house located behind the Nedous Hotel on the Maulana Azad Road in Srinagar tending to the ailing leader. Though some of the eminent cardiologists from New Delhi and other parts of the country had visited the Sheikh they prescribed medicines only after seeking opinion from Dr Sheikh  Jalal.

Unfortunately he had become victim of what one would call “dirty political intrigues within Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences, Soura,Srinagar, where he joined as a cardiologist and rose to become its Director. I have not been able to fathom the reason for being in the centre of one controversy or the other. He was a doctor,a gantleman who was misunderstood by his colleagues, by political leaders and never by patients.

Dr Sheikh Jalal had many interesting anecdotes to say.One pertained to a senior doctor in the AIIMS. .One eminent surgeon, Dr Atma Prakash, had t aken ill during the middle of a night. He used to reside within the faculty complex of the AIIMS. Since he had faith in Dr Sheikh  Jalal Atma Prakash called for the young doctor. Dr Sheikh Jalal administered all medicines that were required to revive his heart. But he died in the morning.

Whe his body was being carried to the cremation ground Dr Sheikh Jalal was one among a big group of mourners accompanying the body. A couple of sleuths of an Indian intelligence agency, who also accompanied the body, were heard by Jalal asking each other “why Atma Prakash had summoned a muslim when there were other senior doctors available for help ?” They went even to the extent of smelling some mischief from Dr Sheikh Jalal.

Alas! Dr  Sheikh  Jalal survived that incident but could not save himself from the bullets of terrorist. His death is a big loss to his wife, mother and children but a bigger loss to the people of Kashmir.

What could have been the reason for unidentified terrrorist to attak Dr Sheikh Jalal ? He was highly gullible. He placed trust in everybody and would open his heart before strangers too.

His mother would be waiting for her son to get up and have “namkeen chai”(tea added with salt and milk) and chappati made of maize flour for his breakfast. Personally I believe that Dr Sheikh  Jalal was a symbol of a man of simple living and high thinking. He did not move out of of Pampore and settle somewhere in Srinagar when he had the option. He had no love for comforts and that is why rustic life suited him.But the gunmen thought otherwise. Peace be to his soul. (KIP)

Abdul Rashid Ghazi of People's league

Front ranking pro-freedom organisation the Jammu and Kashmir People's League leader Abdul Rashid Ghazi who was mysteriously found dead on Thursday in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district may have died due to torture, post mortem has revealed.

Reliable sources said that Rashid was been beaten to death by some unknown persons as his head was bleeding profusely. “It is a clear case of murder, not an accident.”

They said the deceased was returning from Islamabad after attending the condolence meeting of Party Chairman Mukhatar Ahmad Waza’s mother.

According to People’s League members, Rashid didn’t die by accident but has been murdered. “There is no question of accident, we have received postmortem report and it shows death due to torture.”
Rashid was taken to government hospital Baramulla where his postmortem was conducted around 12 pm, sources said.

A senior doctor from Baramulla hospital wishing anonymity said the deceased has died most probably due to torture as there are visible marks all over his body and abrasion on both knees. “The deceased has suffered grave head injury on the posterior side of right central bone in his head which leads to cardio reparatory arrest resulting in on-spot death,” the doctor said.

Chairman, Peoples League, Mukhtar Ahmed Waza said India has adopted unique way to kill innocent Kashmiris from 6-year-old to 70-year-old. “We don’t need state probe into the killing. As there are countless probes ordered which are altered according to their needs. We demand international agencies to conduct a probe into the innocent killing of Abdul Rashid Ghazi,” Waza said.

He said Ghazi was supporting the resistance movement from 1965 and has worked on various facades. “He has been murdered in a well-planned manner to crush the ongoing movement,” Mukhtar added.

A police spokesperson said we are ascertaining the facts into the mysterious death. “We have registered a case under 174 CrPc and investigation is on.”

He said we have shifted body to the hospital where postmortem was conducted. “One mark of injury has been found on the head.”

According to initial investigations, the circumstantial evidences of the spot suggest that it is a hit and run road accidental case. However police has taken the cognizance,” the spokesperson added.
Meanwhile, Peoples League General Secretary Muhammad Ashraf Vaid has demanded a judicial probe into the mysterious death of party’s senior leader.

On August 11, 2008, Chairman of Jammu Kashmir People's League, Sheikh Abdul Aziz was killed by army while he was leading a peaceful public demonstration against the “economic blockade” in the infamous Amarnath Shrine agitation which witnessed 68 innocent killings across Valley.

Prof. Dr. Sheikh Jalal

Prof. Dr. Sheikh JALAL
India's eminent cardiologist Prof. Dr. Sheikh Jalal died after cardiac arrest in the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) here on Saturday, a month after he was critically injured in a suspected militant attack in his hometown Pampore, near Srinagar.

The attack occurred on July 18, when Dr. Sheikh Jalal was on his way to attend a condolence meeting, after examining patients for free in his clinic. Both his police guards died on the spot and the assassins decamped with their arms and ammunition.

However, no militant outfit has claimed responsibility for the attack in which his eyes, chest, lungs and other organs were severely damaged. Hospital sources told The Hindu that Dr. Sheikh Jalal developed infection in the lungs which led to multiple organ failure.

Dr. Sheikh  Jalal was Director of the prestigious tertiary care hospital, Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), in Srinagar for three years after heading the Department of Cardiology and working as Dean of the Medical Faculty for over 15 years. It was at the AIIMS, that he had got his degree of Doctor of Medicine in Cardiology in the 1980s.

The body, embalmed after post-mortem, will be flown to Srinagar early on Sunday. Family sources said the funeral would be performed at Pampore.
Ahmad Ali Fayaz in Srinagar

Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, along with his wife, visited the AIIMS to console Dr. Sheikh Jalal's wife Masooda Rajpuri, a retired Registrar of SKIMS, a deemed university.

Political leaders and the intelligentsia in Jammu and Kashmir described the death of Dr. Sheikh Jalal as an irreparable loss to the State, while the medical fraternity is shocked. “His contribution to infrastructure development at SKIMS stands unparalleled,” Head of CVTS Ghulam Nabi Lone, said.
Dr. Jalal is the second senior faculty member of SKIMS who has been shot dead by suspected militants in J&K, after the fatal attack on eminent cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon Abdul Ahad Guru in 1991-92.

Dr. Guru, who had returned from Buffalo in the U.S. to serve the people in his State, was shot dead a day after he was kidnapped from SKIMS. Known for his proximity to the pioneering guerrilla group Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF), Dr. Guru, it is widely believed, was eliminated by a rival militant outfit.

However, the retired bureaucrat Wajahat Habibullah, who was Divisional Commissioner of Kashmir in 1992-93 and who later gained proximity to separatists like JKLF chief Yasin Malik, added a new dimension to the episode when he wrote in a book that Dr. Guru's murder was engineered by a government agency which later got his assassin eliminated in a covert operation.

India's eminent cardiologist Dr. Sheikh JALAL

Dr. Sheikh JALAL
Another doctor fell to bullets. A sympathetic   note followed from the authorities, but as usual no Ex- director of SKIMS, an ex-head of the department and a doctor who was engaged in  care  of Kashmiri patients….Almost two decades back the bullets hit another doctor of SKIMS, another head of the department, a bold surgeon, a conceiver, a visionary and a humble human being-Prof.Abdul  Ahad Guru. He was murdered for a crime that each one of us committed those days-asking for something that was denied to us for ages. His murder was wrapped under the thick black quilt of “murder by un-identified gunmen.” No one spoke for the justice to the victim or to his family. A young boy lost his father, a woman lost her husband and Kashmir lost an able son. No probes, no inquiries and the matter stood forgotten. probes and no inquiries. In a few weeks from now   the matter will be forgotten. This   time it was an

The fear that gripped the community of doctors was so much that Dr.Guru was never remembered   on his death anniversary, never was a lecture delivered in his honor, and never was a stone erected in his memory in the very premises of the college he conceived. No medical associations of the state, country or the world-talked about Dr.Guru….ever.-

Years went by , a  loyal bureaucrat  of Government of India  who has played long innings in Kashmir came out  with the stunning revelation in his book ‘My Kashmir’ about the truth regarding the murder of Dr. Guru. He named those who were responsible for the dastardly act, he named the real men behind the scene  as he removed the dark quilt from the dark scene. A late revelation-  nonetheless informative. No one yet again after these facts which exposed the authorities   came to the surface- spoke about justice to the victim. The family   had possibly reconciled to their fate as the actual murderer had been eliminated.

Another great doctor fell to the bullets almost within the premises of the hospital he worked in. Dr Farooq Ashai   served as Medical Superintendent and a head of the department in Bone and joint hospital Barzulla. He was on his way to his hospital when he   was shot at. A talented man, a versatile doctor, a competent orthopedician, a loving teacher was silenced forever. Who killed him, why   and how- was never revealed. His wife who intubated her own husband with the hope to revive him in the very theatres where he had revived thousands –is waiting   even today for the justice to her husband. But will she ever get it in this dark valley? And we all have maintained silence- out of fear or out of callousness –regretfully so.

A little less known than these doctors was a gentle Professor of surgey at SMHS hospital Dr. MS Malik. The humble Professor was crushed   by Forces vehicle in Lal Chowk. No probes, no punishments and no inquiries. They were not bothered and we too continued with our lives.
Another doctor who dared to enter into the world of politics –Dr.Lone was mysteriously killed to satisfy someone’s thirst   for a doctor’s   blood. His friends   in political circles never asked for a probe into his death. Here too a doctor was a victim.

Well a survivor she is-thankfully , Dr. Girja Dhar one of the boldest principals of GMC Srinagar who held it together when it was all set to be doomed, faced a shower of bullets - a horrifying incident that went unaccounted, un-probed. The attempt on the   life of a high profile public servant did not evoke a condemnation from any quarter.

Doctors have borne the odds, suffered but   delivered amidst   crises in this conflict zone. But these witnesses’ of genocides are being hit and no one it seems is bothered. From Dr.Guru to Dr.Ashai, Dr.Malik to Dr. Sheikh Jalal-these were the doctors who stayed back in trouble torn valley to treat patients. Their families had invested in them   and their patients had trust in them. Why won’t someone tell us why they were killed?

What about the national and international health organizations and associations? These agencies busy with celebrating Malala days are maintaining a criminal silence over the death of our Messiah’s-Why?

It is a pain to be born in Kashmir-and more painful to be a practicing doctor witnessing death in all forms. The stress under which a doctor works here is tortuous   and the risk to life and honor is tremendous. If a doctor braving it all cannot be protected-then where should doctors seek asylum and where will the poor patients go?

This may not be the entire tale of doctors working in Kashmir and dying at the hands of unknown and unidentified men-I hope to talk more elaborately in my book “Whiteman in Dark”-till then I dare to condemn the attacks  on life and honor of doctors of Kashmir (Greater Kashmir)

Tribute to Dr. Sheikh JALAL-H.E. Chairman Muslim Educational Institute- MEIT

Dr. Sheikh JALAL
With deep sorrow and grief, H.E. Chairman Muslim Educational Institute- MEIT, on behalf of the Management and Staff, condoles the said demise of Dr. Sheikh JALAL renowned Cardiologist and Ex-Director SKIMS. Dr. Sheikh JALAL will always be remembered for his services to the community in general and downtrodden people in particular.

Muslim Educational Institute shall remain closed on 21st of August,2013 in his honour.
