The Jammu and Kashmir Medicinal Plants Introduction Centre-JKMPIC has maintaining a world class Olive propgation unit having capacity of 2 lakh plants annually of 3 leading OliveVarieties.

The Jammu and Kashmir Medicinal Plants Introduction Centre, Pampore-Pulwama was established under the Fruit & Medicinal plants Development Project during the year 1991.  The infrastructure, existing as on date, was created over a period of 5-10 years.  The Olive plantation was started during the year 2001-2004.  The main thrust of the programme was to develop Olive plantation of exotic/ improved cultivars.  Propagation of Pear, Plum, Peach, Apricot, Hazelnut,  Strawberry, Goji berry,Ginkgo biloba and Walnut were also included in the developmental plan of the Unit.  Under the Fruit & Medicinal plants Development , 3 cultivars of  Olive, 3 cultivars of Peach, 2 cultivars of Apricot, 3 cultivars of Plum, 3 cultivars of Almond, 2 1 cultivar of Saffron-Crocus, 4 cultivars of Pear, 3 cultivars of Hazelnut, 3 cultivars of Kiwi,4 cultivars of Strawberry and one cultivar of Persimmon were imported from Italy & China.

One olive oil extraction unit and one mist propagation chamber was also established under the said programme.

Fruit & Medicinal plants Development  was concluded during the year 1998 and the Station is being run by the JK Medicinal Plants Introduction Centre since then.

Main Markets : The institution mainly supplies its products to Mumbai,Delhi and Banglore.They also export Taxus bacatta ,Viola odorata , Bixa orellana fruit and medicinal seeds to North America. “ We exported Ginkgo biloba to Pakistan and are also planning to export to Gulf countries next year,” says Sheikh Gulzaar, adding, “ Our  medicinal seed production capacity is 200-500 kg per year.”

Manpower : There are two technicians with high school qualification working in the production of plants. We have two plant introduction centers, one in Ramban and one in Kishtwar ,managed by M.Sc biotechnology with 5 regular employees, maintains Sheikh Gulzaar.

Milestones: The institution plans to do large scale production of fruit and medicinal plants at Pampore in the future.``We have also introduced this year ready –to-use medicinal plants alongwith fruit plants,” says Sheikh Gulzaar. He is wellknown botanist  and has 21+ years experience and research & development  in medicinal plants and is interested to meet the expectations and needs of the nation. Not only the said The Jammu and Kashmir Medicinal Plants Introduction Centre is working in the country but throughout the world its research is going on. The institution has received about 7,880 applications since 1994 for giving full descriptions regarding such plants as well as identity, birth, botanical information and family structure of such plants and its benefits as well as “we have been given letter of originty, Phytosanitary information & letter of authenticity , with the result such fellows have been absolutely helped in carrying  over their research forward”.  “I have also secured hundreds of seeds from Europe, Middle East and Africa and have planted them in different areas and have obtained seeds from them as well as medicines, but it is difficult as the said seeds are only being sowing in such areas where the atmosphere will be neat and clean. Said Sheikh Gulzaar 

Sheikh Gulzaar further added that Government of Jammu and Kashmir is not helping us. “Till date government of Jammu and Kashmir has not helped us in any way, we have got on lab or other high-tech facilities so that our job will become easy”,

Research institutions, Universities and organizations should identify the problems of our agriculture; we lack the speed in all situations.

He further added that we are dependent upon organic fertilizers i.e. biomass, peat, manure plant leaves, tree barks but to obtain such items “we have to work hard as such the public is not hesitating to purchase our seeds and our target remains always upon such medicinal plants which is having demand in the market for ever”.

“Threat is not the availability of the fertile land but current tendency to go away from agriculture and converting the land for other proposes. He said “Lack of direct access to market place, involvement of the middle man and lack of man power due to the younger generation choosing other professions for better marginal & small farmers.” He said

To invest for upliftment of J&K “We have to make focus on Kashmir Himalaya for cultivating such plants to obtain medicines” which can be used for Cancer disease also and second main focus will be Food Technology as our country is presently facing heavy danger of Cancer and shortage of food.

A Medicinal Plant Conservation Area- The main aim of Jammu and Kashmir Medicinal Plants Introduction Cente's are to conserve the medicinal plants in its natural habitat and preserve its gene pool. JKMPIC is a stretch of natural vegetation having within it various types of habitat and microclimates. They are established in different biogeographic zones in co operation with the State Forest  Departments. Syed Ali Shah Gilani asked to pay Rs 1.73cr tax

Srinagar : Income Tax department has asked  Kashmiri separatist  Syed Ali Shah Geelani to pay Rs 1.73 crore in tax dues over a period when he had not filed his returns after rejecting his appeal.

The I-T sleuths, who had swooped on residences of Geelani and his family members in 2002 and seized valuable items including a diamond-studded watch gifted by Pakistan Government, had raised a tax demand of over Rs 1.5 crore.

Geelani challenged the demand and approached the Commissioner of Income Tax (appeals) for review of the case and also sought a waiver, saying he did not earn anything other than the pension from Government of Jammu and Kashmir and from agriculture land.

The case dragged on for nearly three years and recently the appeal was dismissed after which he was asked to deposit Rs 1.73 crore as tax liabilities by the end of 2010.

Geelani, who heads the breakaway faction of Hurriyat Conference, has still the option to go to the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT).

The Tax Department had raised the demand of Rs 1.73 crore against the firebrand Jamaat-e-Islami leader after giving him ample opportunities to furnish answers to a questionnaire about his sources of income.

The questionnaire followed an assessment of Geelani's wealth by the department following a series of raids conducted at his house and other places in June 2002.

The department had raided Geelani's house and other places of his kin on June 9, 2002 and seized Rs 10.2 lakh and 10,000 US dollars in cash, vouchers showing purchase of substantial amount of jewellery, a diamond-encrusted watch inscribed with "From Pakistan Government" besides documents pertaining to purchase of property and vehicles.

Geelani had shown an annual income of Rs 17,100--Rs 7,100 as pension from the state Assembly as a former MLA and Rs 10,000 as agriculture income.

However, according to the assessment made by the Income Tax Department, the monthly expenditure of Geelani allegedly ranged from Rs one lakh to Rs 1.5 lakh as he had 15 servants at his house and his wife had confirmed that she used to get Rs 25,000 per month for kitchen expenses.

When asked to comment, Geelani said he had not received the notice as yet and would like to first understand the grounds of rejection before reacting.
