ETIM terror group 'behind Tian'anmen suicide attack'

Terrorist organization the East Turkistan Islamic Movement (ETIM) was behind this week's suicide attack in Beijing's Tian'anmen Square, China's top security official said.

"This violent terrorist incident in Beijing was organized and premeditated by the ETIM, which is entrenched in central and western Asian regions," said Meng Jianzhu, chief of the Commission for Political and Legal Affairs of the Communist Party of China Central Committee.
Meng was speaking to Hong Kong-based Phoenix TV.

He made the comments, without giving further details, on the sidelines of a regional security meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in Tashkent, capital of Uzbekistan, on Thursday.
Two people were killed and another 40 injured at noon on Monday when Usmen Hasan, his mother Kuwanhan Reyim and his wife Gulkiz Gini, from the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region drove a jeep into a crowd after crashing into a guardrail on the Jinshui Bridge, which spans the Forbidden City moat.

Two knives, an iron baton and flags related to religious extremism were found in the jeep, Xinhua News Agency reported.

Five accomplices, also from Xinjiang, were arrested. Police found knives and at least one "jihadist" flag at the temporary residence of the suspects, who admitted that they knew Usmen, and to conspiring to plan and carry out the attack.

On Friday, public security authorities released fresh details of the attack. All the eight people came from Hotan in Xinjiang. They prepared 40,000 yuan ($6,570) for the attack and collected 400 liters of gasoline from various gas stations.

They had checked the site three times before they launched the attack, according to a report by China Central Television.

The United Nations and the United States listed the ETIM — which wants independence for an "Eastern Turkistan" — as a terrorist organization in 2002. China listed it as one of the four terrorist organizations related to "Eastern Turkistan" forces in 2003.

China said the group was responsible for an attack on armed police in Kashgar on Aug 4, 2008, four days before the Beijing Olympics.

Fourteen officers were killed after being hit by a truck driven by an attacker. Earlier that year, police busted a terrorist cell run by the ETIM that had been plotting to carry out suicide attacks, poisonings and kidnappings of Olympic athletes.

Ma Pinyan, a senior anti-terrorism researcher and deputy director of the ethnic and religious study center at the Xinjiang Academy of Social Sciences in Urumqi, said, "ETIM, which is one of the main terrorist groups posing a severe threat to Xinjiang, has been the subject of crackdowns by the Chinese authorities for years.

"As a result, border areas with China in neighboring countries have become hotbeds for its activities, which are aimed at continuously providing training for people in Xinjiang and masterminding attacks."

Security in Urumqi has been stepped up since the day of the attack.
Meng briefed fellow SCO members Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, four of which share a border with Xinjiang, about the attack.

He said many countries, including China, are under threat amid increasing global terrorist activities and China is more determined to fight against violence and terrorist crimes.

Zhang Xinfeng, director of the executive committee of the SCO's Regional Anti-Terrorism Agency, said it will help China "get to the bottom of the case" by cooperating with the investigation, Xinhua reported.

Yang Yujun, a Defense Ministry spokesman, said on Thursday the Chinese army will combat various terrorist activities when necessary according to government instructions under the National Defense Law and the Emergency Response Law of China.

He said terrorism is an international enemy that many countries' armies have been ordered to combat.
Pierre Picquart, a China observer and professor of geopolitics at the University of Paris-VIII, said China is no exception to terrorism, as it is becoming more open.

"French President Francois Hollande has expressed his willingness to have more political exchanges with China, which should also include cooperation on fighting against global terrorism," he said.

"This type of terrorist attack can happen anywhere, in any city, in any country. Therefore, we have to take effective and important action and cooperate to fight all types of terrorism."
Li Xiang in Paris contributed to this story.

Buy Atropa belladonna
Atropine is a naturally occurring tropane alkaloid extracted from deadly nightshade (Atropa belladonna), Jimson weed (Datura stramonium), mandrake (Mandragora officinarum) and other plants of the family Solanaceae. It is a secondary metabolite of these plants and serves as a drug with a wide variety of effects.

In general, atropine counters the "rest and digest" activity of all muscles and glands regulated by the parasympathetic nervous system. This occurs because atropine is a competitive antagonist of the muscarinic acetylcholine receptors (acetylcholine being the main neurotransmitter used by the parasympathetic nervous system). Atropine dilates the pupils, increases heart rate, and reduces salivation and other secretions.

Atropine is a core medicine in the World Health Organization's "Essential Drugs List", which is a list of minimum medical needs for a basic health care system.

New Delhi helps Geelani to uproot NC in J&K Geelani active supporters of PDP

mustafa-slide-14-11-2012Srinagar, Oct 30, CNS: National Conference legislator and former Minister, Dr Shiekh Mustafa KamalWednesday accused New Delhi for harbouring Syed Ali Geelani to weaken NC in Jammu and Kashmir.
“Not only Pakistan but New Delhi is also providing monetary assistance to Geelani and other like-minded separatist leaders to uproot National Conference form the political map of the State,” Kamal told Srinagar based news agency CNS adding that people have lost faith in Geelani.
Kamal alleged that Geelani was released to persuade people especially the supporters of Jamat-e-Islami to caste vote in favour of Peoples Democratic Party candidates in forthcoming Parliament and Assembly Elections.
“Geelani and Company will now visit NC bastions to enforce election boycott and would urge upon Jamat-e-Islami supporters and leaders to help PDP during elections,” he said.
He said that PDP and Jamat-e-Islami are hand in glove while Geelani is playing a key role in strengthening their bond. “They should know that they can’t uproot NC as it is the only party in Jammu and Kashmir which has a strong base. Geelani, Jamat-e-Islami or PDP will never succeed in their designs.
National Conference Additional General Secretary lashed out at Hurriyat leaders and said that they are playing negative politics to digest the funds which they receive both from India and Pakistan.
“What these Hurriyat leaders could do for people when they are themselves scattered and disintegrated. If their agenda is one, then why they have opened their shops separately. The fact is that they fill up their coffers and befool fool,” Kamal said adding people of Kashmir should try to find out the reasons why these separatist leaders are not ready to share the same dais.
Kamal reiterated that Geelani was not arrested by the Government but sometime authorities imposed restrictions on his movement to avoid untoward incidents. (CNS)

Growing Lavender

Lavender is a commonly used household herb, though it is better known for its sweet-scented aroma than for its medicinal qualities. However, it is an important relaxing herb, having a soothing and relaxing affect upon the nervous system. The flowering spikes can be dried and used internally in a tincture, though the extracted essential oil is more commonly used. It is not often used internally, though it is a useful carminative and nervine. It is mainly used externally where it is an excellent restorative and tonic - when rubbed into the temples, for example, it can cure a nervous headache, and it is a delightful addition to the bath-water. Its powerful antiseptic properties are able to kill many of the common bacteria such as typhoid, diphtheria, streptococcus and Pneumococcus, as well as being a powerful antidote to some snake venoms. It is very useful in the treatment of burns, sunburn, scalds, bites, vaginal discharge, anal fissure etc, where it also soothes the affected part of the body and can prevent the formation of permanent scar tissue. Edible parts of Lemon Balm : Leaves - raw or cooked. A pleasant lemon-like aroma and flavour, they are used mainly as a flavouring in salads and cooked foods. A lemon-flavoured tea can be made from the fresh or dried leaves. A bunch of the leaves can be added to china tea, much improving the flavour, the leaves are also added to fruit cups etc. They are used as a flavouring in various alcoholic beverages including Chartreuse and Benedictine.

Other uses of the herb : The growing plant is said to repel flies and ants. It is also rubbed on the skin as a repellent, though the essential oil would be more effective here. An essential oil is obtained from the plant (the exact part is not specified, it is probably the entire plant and especially the flowering stems). It is used medicinally. The whole plant is very pleasantly aromatic, the aroma lasting for a long time after the plant has been harvested. It is therefore a very useful ingredient in pot-pourri.

Propagation of Lemon Balm : Seed - sow spring or autumn in a cold frame. Germination can be slow. Prick out the seedlings into individual pots as soon as they are large enough to handle and plant out into their permanent positions when the plants are at least 15cm tall. If there is plenty of seed it can be sown in an outdoor seed bed in April. Plant out into their permanent positions the following spring. Division in spring or autumn. Very easy, larger clumps can be replanted direct into their permanent positions, though it is best to pot up smaller clumps and grow them on in a cold frame until they are rooting well. Plant them out in the spring. Cuttings in July/August.

Cultivation : Planting is usually 40,000 plants/Ha. with propagation from seed or cuttings. The plants have a life of 10 years but are usually replaced every five years with crop rotation to rejuvenate the soil. Propagation in the northern hemisphere is from April to July.

Harvesting period : In the first year the crop is in August, thereafter two crops are experienced. The first in June and the second in August.

Harvesting methods : Usually by hand on a clear warm day as the leaves will turn black if harvested wet. For good appearance leaves should not be left in the sun.

Pre-Treatment : Weed control is recommended (Pank). It has been reported that, in Egypt, irradiating seeds has an effect on growth, essential oil content and composition. The quantity of herb was reduced but the oil content was increased, with the irradiation dosage varying the proportion of the constituents.

Preservation and Storage : The oil should be stored in filled sealed containers, out of light and kept cool. The oil is subject to oxidation.

External Forces increased funding of separatists: J&K Police chief

Arrests and killings of militants not our objective
External Forces increased funding of separatists
Geelani and other separatist leaders have no base in Kashmir: Ashok Prasad

Srinagar
: Director General of Police Ashok Prasad Friday said that latest developments along the Line of Control are the source of concern and they are minutely assessing the situation and trying to figure out whether the strategy adopted by militants are short or long term.

“As per intelligence reports External Forces have increased the funding of separatist leaders and they are getting huge amounts from across the border while the militants along the Line of Control have become more aggressive now which is a cause of worry for us,” Prasad told Srinagar based news gathering agency CNS adding that such changes can create problems for us in future.

He said militants have changed their strategy now and instead of infiltrating during the dead of night, they have started sneaking into our side openly and frequently they resort to heavy firing on Indian posts.“Militants have changed their strategy and we are keenly assessing the situation. As per our reports there are at least 400 militants keen to infiltrate into Kashmir Valley,” Prasad said.

DGP said that at least 80 militants have managed to infiltrate successfully in recent times and they are present in different parts of Kashmir Valley. “Last year as per intelligence reports, this number was 120 but this year it diminished to 80. There is no need to panic as police and security agencies have ability to neutralize them,” he said.

Prasad told CNS that although the number of militants present in Valley is about 180 but, “only 7 to 8 militant leaders of Hizbul Mujhadeen are enthusiastically active in North and South Kashmir. Once these 7 to 8 militants are neutralized, militancy would almost disappear and even stray attacks on security and police personnel would stop,” he said.

“Militants of HM are present in Sopore area while in South Kashmir a group of Lashkar Toiba headed by Commander Qasim is active. Militants in Lolab, Rajwar and Tral are leaderless and no threat to us,” he said adding that militants have started targeting policemen,  and security personnel to demoralize them.

Ashok Prasad said that after failing to achieve their objective in attacking Sarpanchas and Panchas, militants changed their strategy and they have two objectives behind targeting security personnel. “One is to demoralize them and the other is that they should over react after every attack. “We are consciously avoiding both and are not giving them open hand,” he said.

He said that LeT, HM and Jaish Muhammad are providing logistic support to each other and carry out joint operations.

While replying to a question, Prasad said on the eve of Zubin Mehta’s musical concert, militants had planned to strike in Srinagar, Shopian and Pulwama. “Militants managed to strike in South Kashmir, however, we neutralized them in Srinagar and arrested 4 of them who during interrogation confessed that they were involved in several militancy related incidents,” he said.

He said we are following three fold-strategy which includes minimum visibility of security personnel, low profile and zero collateral. “If this policy could be reversed, militancy would come down to zero level but common people would feel the burnt which we don’t like,” he said.

“Arrests and killings of militants is not our objective. Our objective is that peaceful and conducive atmosphere should prevail in the State so that people could participate in electoral process and elect their representatives who could sit across and resolves all the issues politically and amicably,” he said.

While replying to a question, Director General of Police Ashok Prasad said that he has not placed Syed Ali Geealni under house arrest. “It is Code of Criminal Procedure which has imposed restrictions on Geelani. Geelani is free to offer Friday prayers at Hyderpora Masjid but he always insists that he would offer prayers at those places where chances of violence are maximum.

“Geelani should contest elections and prove his representative character. Geealni and other separatist leaders have no base in Kashmir and they knew it well they would not not be able to make it if they contest elections,” he said.

Prasad further said that the matters relating to police department particularly about releasing of ration money and police promotions have been taken up with higher ups and these would be resolved soon. (CNS)

Red alert in Srinagar

Buy Balloon Vine seed
Jammu and Kashmir Police Saturday sounded an alert after several cases of motorcycle thefts were reported from various parts of the Jammu and Kashmir's summer capital - Srinagar.

"Police have started investigations into bike lifting cases that have occurred in the past few days in Srinagar. Four bikes were reported to have been stolen from different places in the city," a police spokesman said.

Security agencies are looking into the possibility of militants having stolen the motorcycles for use in subversive activities, police sources said.

In the past, militants have used stolen bikes to carry out attacks on security forces in Srinagar and elsewhere in the valley.

The attack on an army convoy at Hyderpora here on June 24 which left eight soldiers dead and several others injured was also carried out using a motorcycle snatched by militants from two students in a nearby locality, the sources said.

The common pattern in the four theft cases reported over the past few days is that all the stolen bikes are at least 13 years old. (PTI)

Distinguish between killers and Mujahideen: slain cleric’s mother

By Ahmed Ali Fayaz
In a significant development within the separatist fold in Kashmir valley, the mother of  Maulana Showkat Shah, the Jamiat-e-Ahl-e-Hadith [JAH] chief who was assassinated in a bomb blast here on April 8, 2011, has publicly assailed the secessionist ideologue Syed Ali Shah Geelani over glorifying her son’s alleged killers as ‘Mujahideen.’

Mr. Shah’s mother Aamina has not spared the JAH leadership or the Omar Abdullah government for their “lackadaisical attitude” in bringing her son’s assassins to justice.

“When Showkat sahib was martyred, all the resistance parties, including that of Syed Ali Shah Geelani, [had] jointly investigated the matter and, with the help of the Mujahideen, come out with the names of those who conspired against and killed him,” Ms. Aamina said in a statement on Sunday and reminded Mr. Geelani that the two militants — Javed Munshi Billa Papa and Nisar Khan — had been identified as the cleric’s assassins.

Ms. Aamina has bitterly reacted to Mr. Geelani’s statement in the local newspapers and asked him how he could describe the same persons as Mujahideen and demand their release from jail before Eid-ul-Azha.

Ms. Aamina called it a historic development that the “unknown killers” had for the first time been identified and named by a committee, whose constituents included Mr. Geelani’s organisation, other separatist groups as well as the militant outfits.

“After this, these leaders including Geelani sahib came to console me and I still remember the words of Geelani sahib, who, drawing similarities between the killings of our great Khulafai Rashideen, said that Showkat sahib was killed like those Khulafa [caliphs] were. Today after reading his statement I want to ask him: why this double speak now?” Ms. Aamina said.

She pointed out that Mr. Geelani had also glorified eminent cleric-politician Mirwaiz Maulvi Mohammad Farooq’s assassin as a ‘Mujahid’ in the same statement. “If this is what they believe in, may I ask these leaders why they visit the families of those killed and shed tears?”

She said that “no leader or commoner” would remain safe in Kashmir if separatist leaders like Mr. Geelani failed to distinguish “between a killer and a Mujahid.”

Kiwi fruit- Chinese gooseberry seeds

Kiwi fruit nutrition facts

Kiwi fruit, also known as Chinesegooseberry, is one of the delicious fruits with full of promising health promoting phyto-chemicals, vitamins and minerals. This widely recognized, wonderfully unique fruit is native to eastern Chinese "Shaanxi" province. This exotic fruit is also recognized as China’s national fruit.

The kiwifruit plant is a semitropical, deciduous, large woody vine belonging within the family of Actinidiaceae; Genus, Actinidia. Scieintific name: Actinidiachinensis.

The journey of this humble gooseberry from China's mainland to Oceania, and thence to worldwide be quite interesting! During early years of twentieth-century kiwifruit seeds were carried to New Zealand by missionaries where it has become naturalized. From New Zealand, the fruit spread all across the world, and now grown at a commercial scale in many European and as far as in California regions in North America.

During each season which lasts from September until November, The kiwivine bears numerous ovals shaped, fuzzy, brown colored fruits.

ovals shaped, fuzzy, brown colored fruits. Each fruit measures approximately the size of large hen’s egg, and weighs up to 125 g. internally; its flesh is soft, juicy, emerald green with rows of tiny, black, edible seeds. Fruit texture is similar to strawberry or sapodilla and the flavor resembles a blend of strawberry, apple and pineapple fruits.

Several other cultivars are grown apart from the common kiwifruit variety. "Hardy kiwi fruit" (A.arguta) also known as baby kiwi, are much smaller than "Fuzzy kiwifruit" (A. deliciosa). Their size is similar to that of a large grape with smooth, edible skin. Inside, "hardy kiwi fruit" resembles "fuzzy kiwi-fruit" in color, texture, but usually has intense flavor and sweetness. "Gold Kiwifruit," developed by hybrid technique by agricultural research department in New Zealand, has a smooth, sparse hairs, bronze skin, a pointed cap at one end and distinctive golden-yellow flesh with less tart and more tropical flavor than green-kiwifruit. Commercially, it has a higher market value than common green kiwifruit.

Health benefits of Kiwi fruit

  • Kiwifruit is a very rich source of soluble dietary fiber (3.8 g per 100 g of fruit OR 10% of RDA), which makes it a good bulk laxative. The fiber content helps to protect the colon mucous membrane by decreasing exposure time to toxins as well as binding to cancer-causing chemicals in the colon.

  • The fruit is an excellentsource of antioxidant vitamin-C; providing about 154% of the DRI (daily-recommended intake). Consumption of foods rich in vitamin-C helps the body develop resistance against infectious agents and scavenge harmful free radicals.

  • Kiwi fruit contains verygoodlevels of vitamin-A, vitamin-E, vitamin-K and flavonoid anti-oxidants such as beta-carotene, lutein and xanthin. Vitamin K has a potential role in the increase of bone mass by promoting osteotrophic activity in the bone. It also has established role in Alzheimer's disease patients by limiting neuronal damage in the brain. Total antioxidant strength measured in terms of oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) of kiwifruit (gold, raw) is 1210 µmol TE/100 g.

  • Research studies have shown that certain substances in kiwi-fruit functions as blood thinner function similar to aspirin; thus, it helps prevent clot formation inside the blood vessels and protect from stroke and heart-attack risk.

  • Kiwi-fruit seeds are an excellent source of omega-3 fattyacids. Research studies show that consumption of foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease, stroke, and help prevent the development of ADHD, autism, and other developmental disorders in children.

  • Fresh kiwi fruit is a very rich source of heart-healthy electrolyte "potassium." 100 g contains 312 mg or 7% of daily-recommended levels of this electrolyte. Potassium is an important component of cell and body fluids that help regulate heart rate and blood pressure by countering malefic effects of sodium.

  • It also contains good amounts of minerals like manganese, iron and magnesium. Manganese is used in the body as a co-factor for the powerful antioxidant enzyme, superoxide dismutase. Magnesium is an important bone-strengthening mineral like calcium.

Peoples’ Conference Chairman Sajad Lone

Sajad Lone Sahib
Peoples’ Conference Chairman Sajad Lone has expressed, dissatisfaction, pain and dismay on the Sheikh Imran and Sheikh Farhad to life in prison.

Sajad Lone said that because of such precise attitude towards Kashmiris, there is a well-founded perception in Kashmir that Kashmiris have become canon fodder and that the only sin that Kashmiris need to commit to languish in jails is to be Kashmiris. It seems like Kashmiris are being progressively seen as opportunities to demonstrate the politically saleable aspects of ruthlessness and iron-handedness at the national center-stage.

Stating that the most tragic reality is that successive governments in J&K have allowed the unabated persecution of Kashmiris, Sajad Lone said that PDP rather than taking out protest demonstrations should introspect and answer how it extended legal help and sought justice from the West Bengal government for these two youth when they were in power. NC is sticking true to its role of culling and oppressing Kashmiris, a trait that has been the hallmark of NC’s politics since so many decades, he said.

Sajad Lone said that, rather than grabbing such tragic instances as political opportunities, Kashmiri leaders should treat these issues on a moral, humanitarian, non-political basis and ensure that injustice is not meted out to Kashmiris. There are a lot of under-trial Kashmiris languishing in jails without proper legal-aid and representation. It is the duty of Kashmiri leaders, regardless of their political intentions or affiliations, to ensure that these Kashmiri youth are legally well represented and are safeguarded from a growing blood-thirst to persecute them.

“Unfortunately however our successive government as well as the political parties in the State have been more interested in extracting political nectar out of these cases,” he said, adding that this attitude of persecution was contrary to the pre-requisites of reconciliation and would have far-reaching consequences in Kashmir, further alienating and isolating a common Kashmiri, filling him with a fear of harassment and discrimination.

“There is an omnipresent fear and sense of hounding in Kashmir and such unfortunate cases will further propagate this fear,” he said.

Cultivation of Asparagus

Asparagus is a perennial vegetable grown for its delicious young shoots. Rich in B vitamins, vitamin C, calcium, and iron, asparagus is one of the first crops of spring harvest. Fresh-picked spears are far more tender and tasty than store-bought ones.

Asparagus thrives in any area having winter ground freezes or dry seasons. The mild, wet regions of Florida and the Gulf Coast are about the only places where it’s difficult to grow.

Planting
Select and prepare your asparagus bed with care; this crop will occupy the same spot for 20 years or more. It can tolerate some shade, but full sun produces more vigorous plants and helps minimize disease. Asparagus does best in lighter soils that warm up quickly in spring and drain well; standing water will quickly rot the roots. Prepare a planting bed about 4 feet wide by removing all perennial weeds and roots and digging in plenty of aged manure or compost.

Asparagus plants are monoecious—each individual plant is either male or female. Some varieties of asparagus, such as ‘Jersey Knight’ and ‘Jersey Giant’ produce all male or primarily male plants, so they’re more productive—male plants yield more harvestable shoots because they don’t have to invest energy in producing seeds. Choose an all-male variety if high yield is your primary goal. If you like to experiment, you may also want to grow an heirloom variety or a purple-stalked variety like ‘Purple Passion’. With an all-male variety, twenty-five plants are usually adequate for a household of four; plant double that amount for standard varieties. (Ardent asparagus lovers recommend tripling these quantities.)

Starting asparagus from 1-year-old crowns gives you a year’s head start over seed-grown plants. Two-year-old crowns are usually not a bargain. They tend to suffer more from transplant shock and won’t produce any faster than 1-year-old crowns. Buy crowns from a reputable nursery that sells fresh, firm, disease-free roots. Plant them immediately if possible; otherwise, wrap them in slightly damp sphagnum moss until you are ready to plant.

To plant asparagus crowns, dig trenches 12 inches wide and 6 inches deep (8 inches in sandy soil) down the center of the prepared bed. Soak the crowns in compost tea for 20 minutes before planting. Place the crowns in the trenches 1½ to 2 feet apart; top them with 2 to 3 inches of soil. Two weeks later, add another inch or two of soil. Continue adding soil periodically until the soil is slightly mounded above surface level to allow for settling.
