These Kashmiris are wild animals and can only be tackled by force

I request all those who were busy criticizing our security forces in Kashmir for the past few days to read this news article carefully.

Till few days back, many of our readers had criticized the way of tackling the law and order in Srinagar by our security forces.

I have been strongly debating the issue on this forum for the past two months. We all need to understand that these Kashmiris can never ever be true Indians by heart. They can be physically present in India but their heart beats for Pakistan.

We have always seen one side of the picture; that is the security forces using force on these protestors. Has anyone ever thought of how insane these protestors are; that if they are not controlled in the initial stage; they can set buildings on fire. If they are not even controlled now; they can set afire petrol pumps; showrooms; army offices and what not.

This is the manner in which these Mules celebrate their festival?? Are these the teachings of their so-called holy Quran. An American church has rightly called for the burning of these so-called holy Qurans.

These goons that can set afire the buildings present in their own state can never be holy; nor do they have any agenda. The bottom line is that these miscreants are been paid by Pakistan to create tensions in the state of Kashmir.

I also dont understand that what for; has our government tamed the Hurriyat in our country. Just make all Hurriyat leaders; esp. Geelani stand in a line; and shoot them.

Chinar (Platanus orientalis) plants available at Chenab Industries Kashmir-CIK

Chinar Leaf
The director, Jammu and Kashmir Medicinal Plants Introduction Centre JKMPIC, Sheikh Gulzaar planted chinar saplings in JKMPIC, Pulwama here yesterday on Monday. While taking to media persons on the occasion, he said Chinar is a heritage tree of the country and as such is a protected plant. Until 2007, Chinar plantation day was observed on March 21 “World Arboretum Day”. However, keeping in view the magnificent and majestic look and attachment and concern of the people of the country of Kashmir with this tree, state government decided to observe March 15 of every year as Chinar Plantation Day, since 2009.

http://cikashmir.blogspot.com/2010/09/chinar-plants-available-at-chenab.html

The director said another advantage of pre-poning the date from March 21 to March 15 is that longer period for plantation. During last two years 12373 saplings of Chinar have been provided free of cost to the people for plantation in different areas of the country Jammu Kashmir Medicinal Plants Introduction Centre has established nurseries for propagation of Chinar saplings and during current plantation season and 93373 saplings are available for distribution.

Sheikh Gulzaar said that anybody who is interested in plantation of Chinar tree can contact the concerned Jammu and Kashmir Medicinal Plants Introduction Centre and obtain Chinar plants.

As per the un-authentic data of 1970, about 42000 Chinar trees of different age groups and sizes were existing in thecountry . But with the passage of time, turmoil, development programmes and population explosion, Chinar trees have faced the brunt of greed like the forest and other plants had to face.

Under such circumstances, JKMPIC took the serious initiative for raising the Chinar saplings for sustained efforts for annual plantation of saplings.

In order to determine the actual number of existing Chinar trees in the Kashmir , a preliminary census was initiated by the Jammu and Kashmir Medicinal Plants Introduction Centre from 2002 which was completed in 2009.

Medicinal plants of India Directory ver.02 released

Medicinal plants play an important ROLE IN HUMAN LIFE TO COMBAT DISEASES SINCE TIME IMMEMORIAL. Srinagar, August 25: The rural folks and tribals in India even now depend largely on the surrounding plants/forests for their day-to-day needs.

Medicinal plant are being looked upon not only as a source of health care but also as a source of income. The value of medicinal plants related trade in India is of the order of 5.5 billion US$ (Exim Report-1997) and is further increasing day-by-day. The international market of herbal products is estimated to be US $ 62 BILLION. India share in the global market of medicinal plants trade is less than 0.5%. In view of the innate Indian strengths, which include diverse ecosystems for growth of medicinal plants, technical/farming capacity, strong manufacturing sector, the medicinal plants sector can provide a huge export opportunity after fulfilling domestic needs.

The present e-book covers systematic account of most different plants with pictures used in medicines. It covers Medicinal Plants containing alkaloids, steroids, flavonoids, glycosides, terpenoids, additives and other active matabolites. We hope that this e. book will be useful not only for technologists, professionals, but also for farmers, traders, students, NGOs, institutions, exporters and importers of Medicinal Plants.

Pakistani flags fly over Kashmir

Srinagar, August : In disputed state of Jammu and  Kashmir, the APHC Chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and veteran Kashmiri Hurriyet leader, Syed Ali Gilani have expressed complete solidarity with the government and people of Pakistan on the flood disasters in the country. Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Syed Ali Gilani in their separate statements in Srinagar on the occasion of Pakistan’s 64th Independence Day, today, prayed for the stability, prosperity and progress of the country.

They thanked the government and people of Pakistan for their continued moral, political and diplomatic support to the Kashmiris’ just struggle for right to self-determination.

The Crescent and Star flutters in the hearts and the minds of the brave people of Kashmir. No amount of repression and obfuscation can hide that fact. The Kashmiris once again proved it in the dog days of August. What do you say about a people that hoist Pakistani flags and hold freedom rallies on August 14th (Pakistan independence day), and then the next day on August 15th (Indian independence day) they burn Indian flags and host black flags across the state.

It says that the the Kashmiris in their hearts and in their souls are Pakistan. they listen to Pakistani songs, watch Pakistani Television and root for the Pakistani cricket team during the India-Pakistan matches. Pro-freedom, Pro-Pakistan and Anti-Indian demonstrations continue in Srinagar. “They” hide the pictures of the Pakistan flags, but once in a while, they slip up. Keep an eye out, you will find hundreds of green Muslim flags mingled in with Pakistani flags in the crowds, and atop building in Kashmir. You see them burning the Indian flag and kissing the Pakistani flag. They yearn for freedom and they aspire to become Pakistanis. Pakistan is their destiny and “Azadi” (freedom) is their dream.

Every year on 14th Aug (Pakistani Independence Day), Pakistani flag is hosted every where in Kashmir, including the govt. buildings and on 15th Aug, same people burn the Indian flag.

APHC leader, Yasmeen Raja led a big procession in Pampore in connection with Pakistan’s Independence Day. A Pakistani flag was unfurled while children sang Pakistan’s national anthem on the occasion.

Hurriyet leaders, Agha Syed Hassan Al-Moosvi, Aasiya Andrabi, Masarrat Aalam Butt, Farooq Ahmed Dar, Jammu and Kashmir People's Leauge, Tehreek-e-Hurriyet, Democratic Freedom Party, National Front, Peoples Freedom League, Jammu and Kashmir Salvation Movement, Mass Movement and High Court Bar Association in occupied Kashmir in their statements felicitated Pakistanis on the Independence Day. The APHC-AJK chapter organized a function in Islamabad, today, to extend felicitations to the people of Pakistan on this occasion. It was presided over by Convener, Mehmood Ahmed Saghar.

Meanwhile, despite curfew and stringent restrictions, forceful anti-India demonstrations were staged in Hazratbal, Pattan, Bandipore, Budgam and Seloo. Several people including a 5-year old girl were injured when Indian troops resorted to heavy baton charge and excessive teargas shelling to disperse the protesters in Islamabad, Ganderbal, Pattan, Bandipore and Seloo. Thousands of people, today, participated in the funeral of a youth who was killed in the firing of Indian troops on protestors in Trehgam, yesterday.

On the other hand, Kashmiris on both sides of the Line of Control and the world over will observe the Indian Independence Day, tomorrow, as Black Day marked by complete strike in occupied Kashmir and protest rallies in world capitals. Call for observance of the Black Day has been given by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Syed Ali Gilani. The occupation authorities have made unprecedented arrangements to thwart protest demonstrations on the day. Curfew has been imposed in several cities and towns. (Writer-South Asia)

There are Kashmiris Who want Freedom from India or Pakistan says Bipasha Basu

By: Sheikh Gulzaar
Srinagar, 12, August: Two years in the making, Bipasha Basu’s Lamhaa is finally up for release today. Though narrated as a thriller, at the core of it, the film carries an issue-based subject. Considering the fact that Kurbaan, which released last year, too was an issue-based film (despite the thriller treatment) and still didn’t work at the box office, isn’t Bipasha worried about the fate of Lamhaa?
Bipasha Basu

“Well, honestly I really don’t know much about such matters. How can one predict? Audiences are very moody and sometimes they ignore even good films. The business of films is so unpredictable and you don’t know how your product is received by the audience. Of course, I do wish though that people watch Lamhaa. There couldn’t have been more topical film than this”, says Bipasha, who is having a mainstream release to her name (if one ignores the atrocious Pankh) close to nine months after All The Best.

“Lamhaa is important because it talks about the country that we are living in and the situation which is prevalent here”, reflects Bipasha. “Today we are talking about Kashmir but the reality is such that this could happen in any state in our country. We constantly hear about how Kashmir is a disputed place and how there are people who want freedom from India or Pakistan. But then we just pause for a second, have those mixed emotions and move on. That’s not fair because we should not be okay with the stalemate situation out there.”

With a definite subject clarity coming from the man at the hot seat, Rahul Dholakia (the director), Bipasha has come to realize the plight of an average Kashmiri in on her own small way. In fact, the character played by her also mouths a statement, ‘Yeh gussa hamein virasat mein milta hai’, which pretty much sums up the core of the film in a big way.

“Absolutely”, Bipasha says immediately, “This dialogue really makes an impact. You can, I can talk about it but would realize the truth behind it only after talking to a Kashmiri. It is a different situation when you actually see their plight”.

On a parting note, she makes a call to the youth of India. “I just hope that youth watches Lamhaa as well other than the frothy films that release practically every week”, she says, “One should watch all kind of films. With the kind of infrastructure, dedication and conviction that has gone into the making of Lamhaa, we should encourage the effort more than ever”. (Writer-South Asia)

by Tanveer Habib: I am sorry to say that both are strong enough to be compared with each othjer. While Sajjad is young and dynamic Geelani sahab is more determined unchanging and sound. Both are needed by the people of Kashmir very much. last night on CNN-IBN Sajjad sahab himself said that it was below his dignity to speak against Geelani sahab, so why create a divide? I was really angry with Sajjad sahab for being in the fray for elections carried out by India but now i realise he is an asset and we need him. I would like him to unite with Geelani sahab as soon as possible. We need him.

Manmohan is fast becoming Jagmohan for Kashmir. Zafarul-Islam Khan

Kashmir: Act before foreign forces land in Srinagar
The Valley today is a Kosovo-in-waiting. The government should act now before it is too late.

By Zafarul-Islam Khan

New Delhi (2 August 2010): For the last two months only bullets are talking in Kashmir. Dozens of lives, mostly school-going young men and women, have succumbed to the bullets fired by the security forces directly into their chests. Ten such victims have died within the last twenty four hours for pelting stones and violating curfew. The central cabinet?s security committee met last night without the attendance of even the  governor, the de facto ruler, of the state. Today the dummy chief minister of the state was called for a meeting in Delhi and assured that direct central rule will not be imposed on the state.

The situation in the Valley has not deteriorated within a day or two and forces across the border alone are not responsible for the chaos seen in the length and breadth of the Valley. Today?s chaos in the Valley basically reflects the failure of the central government which despite declarations and promises to the contrary, has utterly failed to negotiate with the people who matter in Kashmir, which has thrown in the dustbin the autonomy and self-rule proposals presented by its own trusted hands in the state. Musharraf and even the current Pakistani government have been time and again offering proposals to arrive at a settlement of sorts taking into account the ground realities but visionless people in Delhi have squandered the opportunity. The army bullets once again prove what our enemies claim that India is interested only in the land of Kashmir and not in its people. Manmohan is fast becoming Jagmohan for Kashmir.

The way forward is to sack the childish government of Omar Abdullah, set free all activists and political leaders arrested during the last few weeks, withdraw the army and allied forces from all inhabited areas in the Valley, impose governor raj for a fixed and declared period of six months, accept the autonomy proposal presented by the J&K Assembly during Farooq Abdullah?s tenure in 2000, announce a general amnesty for all militants and welcome those who crossed over into POK, hold a fair election with none barred from contesting and monitored by foreign observers like Jimmy Carter and representatives from the UN, EU, OIC etc and let the real winner rule the state. Meanwhile, India must engage in a serious and purposeful dialogue with Pakistan taking into account the various proposals offered by Musharraf and the current government in Islamabad.

Failure to work on these lines will be fatal. The protests in the Valley are quickly taking the shape of an intifadah which no amount of army bullets will be able to control. Rather, these criminal bullets and their innocent victims will invite foreign intervention. Let the short-sighted strategists in Delhi realise that foreign intervention is no longer a myth. A prolonged protest, wanton wholesale murder of the civilians and children by the security forces and collapse of the dummy civil government will be enough to pass a resolution in the UN to authorise foreign military intervention and the small men in Delhi will not be able to prevent such forces from landing in Srinagar. The Valley today is a Kosovo-in-waiting. Act now before it is too late.

700 Kashmiri youth arrested, many detained under PSA

Srinagar, July 16 In disputed state of  Kashmir, Indian police have arrested around 700 youth during the past four weeks for participating in anti-India demonstrations in the Kashmir Valley. The police officials told newsmen that the youth had been arrested in nocturnal raids, Kashmir Media news Service reports.

The police have filed false cases against the arrested youth besides slapping draconian law, Public Safety Act against many of them.

Srinagar city has been on the boil after the killing of 17-year-old, Tufail Matoo in police action on June 07. The anger further simmered after the killing of Rafiq Ahmad Bangroo, 23, and Javaid Ahmad Malla by paramilitary CRPF.

The occupied valley witnessed a series of massive protests after the killing of 15 people including a woman in police and CRPF firing since June 07.

Dozens of youth were arrested for participating in protests demonstrations in Baramulla, Palhalan Pattan, Sopore, Islamabad, Pulwama, Kulgam, Ganderbal and Shopian areas. “Around 300 youth have been arrested from Srinagar alone,” said a police officer.

The officials said that of the 700 people, 500 have been booked while 200 are currently under detention. “We have also slapped PSA against many of them,” the police official said adding that the PSA would be slapped against more detainees in the coming days as their dossiers were being prepared.

Letter to the editor

Dear Sheikh Sahib,

The playing of Indian occupational Forces convays carring solidiers arms and ammunation, mules, fodder and other itoms is an open Chanakyaneti as not even pedestrians are spared the wrath of the armed men. People of this country traveling in buses, cars, trucks, scooters and pedestrians have to make way for playing of Indian Army Convoys and even a ambulances carrying patients for medicine facilities  have to stop and at times patients die half way as delay caused by playing of Indian Army Convoys deprives them of timely medicare facilities. Even students carring school bags fear the worth of the Kashmirian Freedom Fighters (but armed), whistling all around adding to noise pollution and carrying stick and rod beating everyone that come their way thank heaven they do not open fire perhaps they fear Fidayeen.

How cruel they will be, but they have to quit my country one day the Russians withdraw from Afghanistan.

All Hindus Wake up!

All Hindus Wake up! (or should it be Muslims?).......
(((Of course Muslims, not Hindus, because it's not the Hindus who're sleeping but the Muslims))))

While Muslims and Arabs are sleeping and unable to solve the problem of Palestine, Hindus working in the Gulf and Arab countries are encouraged to go pro-Israel, and anti-Muslims.

Protocol of Hindus
This book was introduced into the London book market for 5 days before it was withdrawn due to the fear of harassment and discrimination against Hindus in the Arab world.

The source of this information comes from the U.A.E Sharjah broadcasting Channel presented by Ra'ad Aman; the program name: "Foreign writings".

Book Title:" All Hindus Wake up"

Subheadings: "The protocols for Hindu leaders"
The Author: Dr. R. Singh

Only 13 of these protocols are mentioned; there're more to it.....

1. Hindus must consider the state of Israel as its most friendly ally due to its negative attitude towards Muslims.
2.. Spread sinful acts and values within Muslim communities.
3. Hindu temples must be built in all places possible (there are many these days) and be visited every day. Also the statue of "Ram" be placed in the work place.
4. . Regular meetings be held to plan ways for working against Islam.
5. Distribution of drugs, and prostitution to be carried out within Muslim countries and communities.
6. Sexual relationships with Muslim women is encouraged to ensure the production of Hindu babies within Muslim communities.
7. If you are a pharmacist or doctor, try at all costs to enduce congenital defects in the feteous.
8. If you are a nurse or doctor, whisper "Ohm" into the newborn's ear.
9. Try to spoil or damage goods in Muslim shops, if you are employed by them.
10. Become their friends, gain their trust and stab them in the back.
11. Turn others against them.
12. If you work in their homes, try to influence their children or wives, and the way of their thinking.
13. Wear a black string around your wrist. (what's the reason after that?)

Kashmir Bleeds!

Srinagar: In the promo of the new flick of the Bollywood “Lamhaa”, Sanjay Dutt says “Mein Kashmir Mein Huun , Duniya ki Sabsay Khatarnak Jageh” ( I’m in Kashmir , the most dangerous place in the world)… Dangerous it is... 11 people killed in one week including a nine year old child and news keeps on pouring. Sanjay’s statement sounds a true reflection of today’s Kashmir.

You can’t kill people at will and expect them not to protest. Protests are the strongest tool of democracy and no power on earth can stop that. Similarly silence does not help anyone but addressing the cause does. It’s time for India to get over its obsessed notion that they can get things done by a bullet but in the bargain they are creating more anger and hate to the extent never seen in Kashmir. People in the country are answerable to their conscience, if they claim to follow Ahimsa and internationally try to stand on a high moral ground. How hallow it is, has to be witnessed in Kashmir of today. If you remember that during the trail of Jassica Lal’s murder case the whole of India including the media went into frenzy to get justice for her. Similarly when the Mumbai attack happened in which innocent people died, people from different walks of life including Kashmiris stood up to condemn the killings and same was with the Nithari murder case and numerous such examples where Indians have been united to get justice for their people. Then why this double standards when something more barbaric happens in Kashmir where 11 people are mercilessly killed in one week including a 9yr old boy. Not even a single voice was raised from the length and breadth of India condemning these horrendous killings. To rub salt on the wounds the paramilitary comes out with the most bizarre statement saying they fired in self defense only to retract later, saying they never fired. Was a nine year old kid strong enough to challenge the whole Indian military might that he was killed? Do you approve of it? Aren’t we humans or its only about the land that you love. Why is it that when it comes to Kashmir Humans rights have no value? I am surprised with the statements of the CRPF trying to tell us that they are the only righteous people around and all others are lying. The comment of the Home Secretary G.K Pillai, that CRPF has shown restraint in not firing and that all these people who were killed are not innocent is, to say the least, ridiculous. He commended his forces for doing a great job. This shows how insensitive they are to the sufferings of the people. He says that the Nine year old kid was kept in front to be killed. Either he is too naive to the actual happenings or maybe they are up to something.

The past few days rumors were rife that Omar Abdullah was to resign and lots of social networking sites asking for it, which the CM empathetically set aside in his press conference. I can’t speak on behalf of Omar nor do I have the right to do so. I condemn the killings as all others do. No civil society would approve the use of brutal force against people. As I had said in my earlier article that killing should never be an option, but having said that I don’t understand how it would help to calm the situation if Omar Abdullah resigns. Can anyone please tell me? and who after him? The one who is responsible for bringing armed forces including the demon Jagmohan to Kashmir or the other who started the whole Amaranth controversy and the Chalo phobia or are you talking about the one who was more interested in his pillion rides, or are we talking about the turn coat who cannot set his house in order and doesn’t even know why is he, where he is. Name one person worth his salt to head the state. Why would we oppose someone who is clearly the most 'no-nonsense' CM Kashmir has ever seen in recent times. I do not want to be a loudmouth who opposes just because conventional wisdom dictates that. Wasn’t It on his intervention that the Machhil fake encounter surfaced? Was anyone aware of it ? Did anyone protest or demand an inquiry? Things would have been long forgotten had he not put his foot down and asked for all encounters to be re-examined. Now that an unfortunate incident like this has happened you can’t blame him for this when the force in question is directly under the control of the centre. Even then the CM had asked the CRPF in clear terms that no fire arms should be used, but even then they disobeyed. In such a situation if someone has to resign then it should be the Home Minister P. Chidambaram. If he offered his resignation when 73 CRPF personnel were killed by Maoist in West Bengal why doesn’t he resign today when the same force has unleashed a reign of terror against the innocent citizens of his country. If he cannot tame his forces he has no right to head them. It’s under his direction that these forces work here. These armed forces are armed with impunity under the draconian Armed Forces Special Powers Act, and their acts are beyond the purviews of the judiciary or the state government. The readers are intelligent enough to understand this. I know it’s difficult to comprehend the fact that young people are getting killed and we have all the reasons to get emotionally charged up and condemn the killings but blaming Omar without knowing the reality is being dishonest.

As Omar said in his press conference I also feel that the political parties have become traders of death. They look out for someone to get killed so they would get an opportunity to exploit the situation. They are equally responsible for the situation that Kashmir is in now. And finally, if you want to help, come up with some concrete ideas about how to stop this. Avoid the crowd. Do your own thinking independently. Be the chess player, not the chess piece.

RAW planning to attack political leaders, separatists in Kashmir: Lashkar

Srinagar: 27 June: Lashkar-e-Toyiba, spokesman said some un-known place to Ed. Ginkgo biloba Seeds avilable in Kashmir

Kashmir is a Resource for Medicinal Plants
Medicinal plants can be a big business in Kashmir
Mother of Herbs, J&K can be Superpower Medicine and Perfumes

More than 5000 aromatic/medicinal plants have been discovered in disputed sate of Jammu Kashmir till date. Scientific observations reveal that the state could become the super power in the future for Herbal Medicine and perfumes if the huge resources are exploited properly and effectively. Scientists have so for prioritized over seven hundred medicinal plants yielding high quality chemicals and other ingredients used in life saving medicaments and aromatherapy and in cosmetics.

People in the west have craze to spray their bedding with flavors before going to sleep. Aromatherapy is gaining laurels the world over with Kashmir Lavender being the crown in the world of aroma. How many people know world’s best aroma is produced in Gulmarg?

Rose of Tangmarg (Rosa Domascena) is the best rose of the world. This rose is resistant to al diseases and as such is the craze for aromatic industries. (Source: Dr. Bashir Ahmad, Gazetteer of India, State Gazetteer Unit, State Editor)

A plant commonly called as Soungul/Pooes-Tul (Taxus Baccata) collected by Dr Bashir is believed to yield some alkaloids that are used as anti-cancer drugs in the world of ailments. The plant needs to be studied seriously.

Vanwangan (Podophyllum Emodi) is found growing all over Kashmir from 6000-10000, especially in Fir forests of Gulmarg and Gurez valley. The root of the plant yields Podophyllum resin, which is very popular in modern medicine. It is a powerful purgative and its action somewhat corresponds to that of mercury, hence it is named Vegetable Calomel.

Dr Chopra of the Calcutta School of tropical Medicine comments on the Kashmir plant. “The resin obtained from the specimen sent from Kashmir generally looks somewhat different from that of the imported drug, but physiologically it is quite as effective. The percentage of resin obtainable from Kashmir rhizome is 10 to 12 percent as compared to the foreign varieties, which contain only 3 to 4 percent. The rhizome analyzed is of excellent quality and the possibilities of manufacture of the resin on commercial scale would be considering.” Dr Chopra made these observations in 1928. SN Kaul in his book Forest Products of Jammu Kashmir writes, “The drug was in great demand some time ago and large quantities were put into the market which resulted in considerable reduction in price. Kashmir has been exporting large quantities of the drug to England. The drug is so plentiful in Kashmir that the total demand of the market can be met from Kashmir alone.”

Another important plant is Kuth (Saussurea Lappa). The Sanskrit name of Kuth is Kashmirja, which means “produced in Kashmir”. Even today its growth is limited to Kashmir.

Kuth: Kuth is used as an aromatic, stimulant, as a medicine for cough, asthma, fever, dyspepsia and skin diseases. It is also used in stimulating mixtures for Cholera and prescribed as a stomachic, tonic, for ulcers and in rheumatism. It is also used as a depurative and aphrodisiac.

According to Kaul, Kuth is a plant of great economic value. Stewart in his book on Punjab plants published in 1864 states that in the year 1837 7000 maunds of Kuth were exported via Calcutta to China.

The government has banned unauthorized possession of Kuth for obvious reasons. However, experts suggest extraction and export of the drug on a large scale for economic upliftment of the state.

Experts accuse the government of failure for ignoring these resources. They believe that Jammu Kashmir can find a place in the economic map of the world if appropriate measures are taken before it is too late.

Ginkgo biloba: Ginkgo biloba is the oldest known species of tree on earth. Fossils have been dated to over 220 million years old. Fossil records have shown that ginkgo trees flourished across the North American continent till 7 million years ago. Due to the climatic changes our planet has been through and the impacts from space and ice ages, the ginkgo was only found in southeastern China. It was saved from extinction by Buddhist monks. The monks cultivated the ginkgo at their temples for more than 1,500 years. Near 800 AD the Buddhist monks brought the ginkgo to Japan. In 1691 the German Engelbert Kaempfer found the ginkgo in Japan. Kaempfer brought seeds back to Europe. The ginkgo has now been distributed all over the world again. The ginkgo makes a beautiful shade tree and is a slow growing deciduous tree. It's fall foliage is a wonderful butternut yellow and tends to drop all at once within 48 hours when the time comes in fall. Jammu and Kashmir Medicinal Plants Introduction Centre collects rare and vanishing species of plants, herbs and spices. For the past 20 years and devoted to developing many varieties of plants Ginkgo biloba, Saffron that can survive in difficult conditions. For trade enquries: cikashmir@gmail.com, home: http://chenabindustries.blogspot.com

The flora : The flora of Himalayan Kashmir comprises about 3,054 species. About 880 species are found in Ladakh. The flora of the Jammu district comprises 506 species. These figures include only the angiosperms, gymnosperms and pteridophytes. The species lists of different districts are being continually updated in taxonomic publications. The lower plants like fungi and algae have not been studied exhaustively; information on the micro-flora of isolated regions is available for some plant orders and families only. The plants of the western Himalayas are well known for their medicinal properties.

This area is a storehouse of medicinal and aromatic plants, which are used in pharmaceutical and perfume industries. The list includes 55 species of important medicinal and aromatic plants. There are 11 medicinal plants in the temperate, cold, arid regions of Jammu and Kashmir. Several medicinal plants grow wild in the temperate and alpine habitats. Some native medicinal plants have been taken up for cultivation, e.g. Dioscorea deltoidea is now cultivated for its tubers which are rich in diosgenin and yield cortisone, a steroid hormone.

Indian Media and Entertainment Industry :List of TV Channels released:

By: Sheikh GULZAAR
Srinagar : The domestic entertainment industry was estimated at nearly Rs 225.0 billion and provided employment opportunities for nearly 6.0 million people in the year 1999. In terms of foreign exchange earnings, the industry contributed around Rs 4,000.0 million in the year 1999. In the current year, this is likely to increase to around Rs 10,000.0 million. This projected growth is likely to occur on account of the increasing migration of the Indian population across the globe, extensive outsourcing of content such as animation by world leaders in the entertainment industry and the imminent broadband revolution in the industry. However, massive investments are required in the area of telecommunication infrastructure with industry friendly government policies. With the domestic consumer already having access to global entertainment avenues, globalization in this industry will only increase at a far greater pace in the coming years.

Changing lifestyles and increasing disposable income levels has facilitated the increasing penetration levels of the media and entertainment industry. Recent estimates indicate that around 68.0% of total adult population have access to the conventional forms of media. The urban middle class population has grown over the years and currently accounts for over 40.0% of the total population. The southern states have a distinct edge in terms of media penetration. For instance, Tamil Nadu and Kerala have penetration levels of over 80.0% in case of mass media. Similarly, in the case of televisions, penetration levels increased to an estimated 75.0% of all urban households in the country. Satellite channels have been the fastest growing category in this segment.

Product Profiling AND SegmentationIndia is a vast country with numerous official languages and a literary history that can be traced back to the birth of civilization. Over the years, the industry has made tremendous progress in terms of technology and attaining self-sufficiency. With around 10,000 publishers and around 40,000 new titles every year, the domestic market is indeed a large market. In recent times, global authors have started to get their works published by domestic majors. This is likely to give a fillip to the industry in the near term. Simultaneously, domestic authors are gaining popularity across the globe. The low cost of production acts as a major attraction to global publishing houses.

From around Rs 6.0 billion in the year 1998-1999, production levels increased to around Rs 7.0 billion in the year 1999-2000. During the same period, import levels increased from Rs 1.4 billion to around Rs 1.50 billion. Similar to its counterparts in the entertainment industry, domestic publishers are witnessing a rapid inflow of pirated books. Recent estimates peg the level of piracy in the domestic market at around 80.0%.

The Indian Music Industry- Exponential Growth Ahead…
The Indian entertainment industry is incomplete without the inclusion of music. Over the years, the importance of music has only increased, especially in case of the movie industry. Of late, movies have gone on to become huge successes largely on the backdrop of good music. While the popularity of film music increased, it also resulted in the growth of other segments such as remix, Indi-pop etc.

Distributors- Enjoying High Bargaining Power…Despite major changes occurring in the industry, reliability on distribution network still persists. Timing is highly crucial in the music industry. New releases have to reach the target audience well on time. Hence, only majors with a wider reach are able to sustain their leadership and generate profits. Furthermore, distribution companies retain a major part of the profits generated in this industry. As a result, several music companies have diversified into setting up of their own retail stores. HMV is a pioneer in this area and has an excellent chain of stores at its disposal. This helps the company to gauge the consumers’ changing perceptions and revamp its product offerings accordingly.

Low Margins- A Major Problem Area…
Estimates peg the cost of producing a cassette at around Rs 35. Purchase of the music rights is the single largest cost component. This is compounded by the incidence of taxes and royalty that account for another Rs 2-Rs 3 per cassette. Furthermore, margins to the traders, manufacturing and transportation charges account for a large chunk of costs.

This tendency to pay rather low prices for Indian music titles is prevalent even in the overseas markets. For instance, while a consumer is willing to pay around US$9-US$11 per cassette for an international music album, he is ready to pay only US$2 for an Indian music album. Such low margins results in music stores only unwilling to retail Indian titles. Consequently, Indian music titles are predominantly found only in Mom and Pop stores in the US.

Generally, in the domestic context, prices are determined mainly by the acquisition price of the music title, the stars involved and the target audience. With music not being on the priority list of a huge chunk of the population, any price hike results in demand shifting to pirated products. Also, there exists a differential pricing policy with regard to classical/ devotional music albums. While the target audience for film music is rather large, the customer base for classical/ devotional music is rather low. Hence, these albums are retailed at higher prices. Also, demand for classical/ devotional music tends to be seasonal in nature. This has a strong bearing on pricing policies.

The Indian Motion Picture IndustryFrom the days of shaky pictures and poor sound quality, the domestic film industry has gone on to become highly sophisticated in terms of infrastructure and product offerings. Furthermore, the domestic film industry is the largest in the world, producing over 800 films per annum, across 52 different languages. The industry generates employment opportunities to nearly 2.5 million people. By the year 2005, this is projected to increase to over 4.0 million. Currently, the industry is witnessing a period of rising pre and post-production costs.

The Changing Television Industry…Since the advent of deregulation in the domestic television industry, the going for Door Darshan has been rather tough. Various private satellite channels have emerged as strong competitors. This is evident from the recent decline in the revenues of Door Darshan. From around Rs 5.7 billion in the year 1996-1997, revenues declined to Rs 3.99 billion in the year 1998-1999. The year 1999-2000 has seen a improvement to Rs 5.0 billion, largely on account of cricket revenues of Rs 1.6 billion.

Simultaneously, revenues for DD Metro have also declined from over Rs 786.0 million in the year 1998-1999 to Rs 460.0 million in the year 1999-2000. Similarly, in terms of coverage and viewership, DD has witnessed an increased in the year 1999-2000.

Around 90.0% of the country’s population had access to DD, while area-wise coverage was estimated at around 75.0%. During the period June 1999-January 2000, viewership of DD’s programs during primetime increased by over 57.0% in the metros and mini-metros. Major reasons for this increased viewing is on account of improvement in the reception quality of signals, presentation of programs and a wider range of programs for viewers.

Satellite Cable Television- A Major Growth Engine…The boom in the satellite cable television segment has been a major cause for the high growth in the entertainment industry. The cable subscriber base has increased from around 0.05 million in the early 90s’ to around 24.0 million in the year 1999-2000. This is further estimated to increase to nearly 48.0 million by the end of the current year. With the rapid proliferation of channels (over 75), and imminent possibilities of the privatization of Door Darshan, growth in this segment is projected to be rather high.

The Coming of Regional Channels…The satellite television and software (content) industries are all set to witness a surge in demand in the coming years. Increasing emergence of regional channels is the major growth driver behind this likely growth. Subsequent to the advent of satellite television in the early ‘90s, regional channels are currently the key focus areas for majors. This is likely to offer a wider range of programs to viewers across the country. Furthermore, factors such as a decline in the pricing of color televisions, technological advancements etc have resulted in a wider audience base. This has resulted in regional advertisers clamoring for a bit of the action. With only around 30% of all households in the country speaking Hindi, this development was inevitable.

While in the past, Door Darshan monopolized the regional landscape with its 14 channels, over 20 regional channels are likely to make their debut this year. While in the South, the current trend is to diversify into news based channels, other markets such as Gujarat, Maharashtra, Punjab etc are witnessing their first dose of regional satellite television. This huge demand has even prompted global major News Corp and market leader Zee TV to look at this market.

Emerging Trends and New DevelopmentsSome of the major fast growing segments in the domestic industry include the music, cable and satellite advertising, infrastructure, exports, animation and FM. The domestic music industry was estimated at around Rs 17,000.0 million in the year 1999 and is projected to grow to around Rs 30,000.0 million by the end of the current year. The export segment is also expected to increase from around Rs 4,000.0 million to around Rs 10,000.0 million during the same period. Revenues from the animation segment are also forecasted to increase from Rs 2,200.0 million to nearly Rs 4,400.0 million by the end of the current year.

In order to capitalize on this fast growth ahead, companies are making large-scale investments in terms of infrastructure. For instance, the Modi Family has invested around Rs 1,500.0 million towards the construction of multiplexes that can screen around 16 films simultaneously. At the same time, majors such as Zee Telefilms and Eenadu TV are expanding their horizons to other markets as well.

TheGlobal Media AND Entertainment Industry- A Snapshot…Changing consumer choices, advent of new technologies and rapid globalization has been the growth drivers of this industry. Increasing penetration of the Internet has changed the dynamics of the industry. The US market has witnessed the maximum impact on account of these changes. Reports indicate that entertainment related expenditure is projected to increase from around US$675 per person in the current year to around US$814 by the year 2003.

Despite such increased spending, majors are also witnessing faster increases in costs. With margins coming under pressure, majors are trying to develop new distribution channels to minimize the impact of such cost increases.

Emerging Trends and New DevelopmentsIn the long term some of the major developments likely to have a deep impact on the global media and entertainment industry include,
· Shifting Preference For Internet-Based Content And The Emergence Of Interactive TV
· Proliferation Of Wireless Application Devices
· Large-Scale Migration To E-Tailing
· Development of Sophisticated Telecommunication Technologies
· Faster Globalization
· Growing Popularity of Mega- Theaters, Super Stores Concept etc
· High Degree of Consolidation in the Industry
· Increasing Digitization in the Industry
· Convergence of the Entertainment, Information and Telecommunication Segments and
· Rapid De-regulation in the Industry

Phenomenal growth in the cable and satellite television business has presented new revenue streams for global entertainment majors. Reports indicate that movie majors are projected to witness revenues of around US$ 11.0 billion by the year 2002 on the sale of their content to satellite television networks. This represents an increase from the 1998 level of nearly US$7.0 billion. As a part of the ongoing “Americanization” of the world, companies such as CNN, HBO, Espn etc have started to focus on their regional versions. Consequently, the scenario in the European, Asian and Latin American markets is fast changing.

However, this globalization process is likely to take some time with the respective governments of various countries still protecting their domestic media industry. This is largely on account of the politically sensitive nature of this medium. With the liberalization process gathering momentum across the globe, these companies will be forces to reckon with in the future.

However, Piracy Remains a Key Issue…Piracy remains the single-most important issue across the global entertainment industry. Estimates indicate that the revenues lost on account of piracy in case of the music industry is around 25%. Furthermore, this level is likely to increase to 40% in the near term. Consequently, the music industry could be affected to a larger extent than its counterparts. This is largely on account of the highly fragmented nature of this industry. Smaller players are likely to suffer the most.

In this regard, the major initiative taken by the industry to protect its intellectual capital is the launch of the Secure Digital Music Initiative (Sdmi). The Sdmi comprising of around 150 companies has adopted the first set of standards to prevent the piracy of music. April 2000 was decided as the deadline for the second phase of regulations. The members of this initiative include music distributors, on-line PC communications service providers. PC manufacturers, home electronics appliances manufacturers etc.

The Internet is not perceived to be a threat by certain majors. Sony Music for instance has been aggressive in formulating an e-strategy. The company has forayed into activities including the promotion of digital broadcasting. Also, strategic alliances have been forged with majors such as EMI, Universal Music, Warner and IBM in order to facilitate the download of full-length CDs. IBM and Microsoft are intensely competing to gain a foothold in this emerging area. IBM and Sony Music have formed a partnership to deliver pirate-free songs over the net. Microsoft, on the other hand tied up with Musicmaker.com to enable users to access the latter’s entire product catalog over the net. Other players including AT& T, Matsushita and Seagram are also trying to foray into this segment. Seagram has formed an alliance with Bertelesmann AG, Germany in order to compete in the on-line music retail segment.

However security protection is still in a primitive stage in this area. For instance, when Microsoft launched its Wmdm software, hackers cracked the software code within hours and distributed the same over the net. Despite such initial problems, there exists a huge potential for music software. In the long-term, companies need to develop technologies that facilitate the freer flow of content rather than trying to enforce more stringent regulations that are only difficult to monitor.

Future Outlook…
The Indian entertainment industry is on a high growth path. Domestic majors are finding better earnings potential in the huge overseas markets. At the same time, corporatization is finally starting to emerge in this highly unorganized industry. This is likely to instill a greater discipline in the functioning of the industry and lead to greater consolidation in the future. The domestic consumer will opt for more sophisticated technology in the near future. Consequently, domestic majors will have to redefine their product offerings.

With literacy levels forecasted to increase in the future, the publishing industry will continue to witness growth. Advent of new technologies such as e-book etc will take a longer time to have an impact on the domestic market when compared to the global markets. While piracy levels are declining slowly, better copyright laws and the rapid implementation of the same are imperative to preserve the creative talent in this industry. The government needs to implement the same in order to facilitate the high growth in this industry.

PPP Chief Arrested from PPP Headquarter Rajbag today by State Police

Srinagar, March 12, 2010: The Flying Squad of J&K Police raided the PPP Headquarters, Rajbagh today and arrested the party Chairman Hilal Ahmed War. War’s arrest is seen as a preventive measure by the State police against a possible post-namaz rally that the Hurriyat (G) had announced. Chairman PPP, while endorsing Hurriyat (G) Chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani’s call had urged the people to take to the streets and register a peaceful protest in the form of a rally. “People should come out in large numbers in response to Geelani Sahab’s call and protest peacefully,” said War.

The PPP Chief has been lodged in Police Station Rajbagh. A party spokesperson condemned his arrest in strong words saying it amounted to State oppression and a denial of right to expression. “This highhandedness of the State shows the times we are living in. If one is not even allowed to demonstrate peacefully, it leaves a big void for violent demonstrations,” said the PPP Spokesman. Geelani and War had urged youths to make sure no stone-pelting incident occurred.(Writer-South Asia)
