Sugar beet feed

Sugar beet feed the secret to cattle feeding success

Whether feeding youngstock, beef cows or dairy cows, the secret to success lies in maximising the benefits that come from their unique digestive system. The rumen is capable of converting huge volumes of lower cost plant material into high value meat or milk, but only if supplied with the correct balance of feeds to maintain a good healthy fermentation.

The speed of this fermentation is driven by how quickly the energy in the feeds is broken down in the rumen, but maximum efficiency – and the most efficient conversion of feed into production – occurs only when the rumen microbes receive a more controlled supply of nutrients. If too much energy is available too quickly, the result is an excess production of lactic acid in the rumen, creating an acid environment (low pH) that disrupts normal rumen activity.

The result is a condition called acidosis, a digestive upset of the rumen that can either be acute (causing a dramatic and immediate drop-off in feed intakes, growth and milk production) or can occur at a less obvious, sub-clinical level. This sub-acute ruminal acidosis (SARA for short) will produce a general reduction in animal vigour, feed intake and productive performance that can easily go unnoticed.

The other key indicator that acidosis might be an issue is very loose dung. Typically seen when cattle are turned out onto lush spring grass or fed a ration containing too much cereal, it’s a clear signal that a more balanced diet is needed.

And this is where sugar beet feed has such an important role to play. Many energy feeds contain high levels of starch (e.g. cereal grains) and low levels of digestible fibre, which together this can create an acidosis risk. What’s needed is a balancing source of energy that breaks down in the rumen more slowly, with the digestible fibre in sugar beet feed one of the best options available.

Including sugar beet feed in youngstock, beef or dairy rations is probably the most cost-effective way to help create a balanced supply of energy in the rumen and help reduce the incidence of acidosis. Ideal as a supplement fed alongside grazed grass, silage, cereals or cereal-based concentrates, the result is better feed intakes, more milk and better growth – not only are digestive upsets avoided, but the improved rumen fermentation will convert all feed more efficiently into production.

Sugar beet feed is also highly palatable, with the additional molasses added to many sugar beet products helping to further drive feed intakes and increase production. Beef cattle fed dry cereal-based finishing rations benefit hugely from the improvements in rumen fermentation and intake that follow inclusion of sugar beet feed, whilst the digestible fibre in sugar beet feed is known to promote milk fat production.

Feeding sugar beet feed as a replacement for part of the cereal-based concentrates fed to dairy cows is one of the best ways to maintain or improve milk butterfat percentage, particularly important when supplying milk for cheese production on a ‘constituent’ contract or even when just trying to achieve a minimum butterfat level.

Arifa Bibi Stoned To Death in Pakistan for Possessing a Cell Phone

A young mother of two has been put to death in Pakistan for possessing a cell phone.

Arifa Bibi was sentenced to death by stoning by a Pakistani tribal court, and was executed on July 11 at the hands of her family. Her uncle, cousins and other family members threw stones at the woman until she died, all because she had a mobile phone. She was buried in the desert far away from her home village, and according to reports, her family was not permitted to be involved in her funeral.

Stoning has been a common sentence in countries like Pakistan for a long time and is used against women and other vulnerable groups. Since the stoning of Arifa Bibi this summer, women’s rights groups have launched an even stronger campaign to put a ban on stoning.

Naureen Shameem, representative for women’s rights group Women Living Under Muslim Laws, says that stoning is used against women in particular as a way to control them.

“Stoning is a cruel and hideous punishment,” said Shameem. “It is a form of torturing someone to death. It is one of the most brutal forms of violence perpetrated against women in order to control and punish their sexuality and basic freedoms.”

The Asian Human Rights Commission explained the act of stoning against women in a recent press release.

“Stoning to death is a barbaric act from a primitive society,” reads the press release. “Society is sent the message that violence is the way to deal with women and other vulnerable groups. Women’s rights are negated through the use of these forms of punishment. Pakistani society has degenerated to the point that, for a woman, keeping a cell phone has become serious crime. It is treated as a worse crime than gang rape, murder and bomb blasts, through which many people are killed on a daily basis.”

Groups are currently petitioning the United Nations to enact a worldwide ban on stoning. It is not known what progress has been made on that front.

Carob tree-Ceratonia siliqua

Ceratonia siliqua seeds

Ceratonia siliqua seeds for sale in India

Carob tree
Family: Leguminosae
Medicinal use of  Ceratonia siliqua: The pulp in the seedpods of carob is very nutritious and, due to its high sugar content, sweet-tasting and mildly laxative. However, the pulp in the pods is also astringent and, used in a decoction, will treat diarrhoea and gently help to cleanse and also relieve irritation within the gut. Whilst these appear to be contradictory effects, carob is an example of how the body responds to herbal medicines in different ways, according to how the herb is prepared and according to the specific medical problem.

Propgation details:

The seedpods are also used in the treatment of coughs. A flour made from the ripe seedpods is
demulcent and emollient. It is used in the treatment of diarrhoea. The seed husks are astringent
and purgative. The bark is strongly astringent. A decoction is used in the treatment of diarrhoea.

Edible parts of Ceratonia siliqua : Seedpods - raw or ground into a powder. The seedpods are filled with a saccharine  pulp and can be eaten both green or dried. They are very sweet but fibrous, the pulp can be used as a  chocolate substitute in cakes, drinks etc. It is rich in sugars and protein. The pods contain about  55% sugars, 10% protein and 6% fat. Seed - rich in protein. A flour is made from them which is  60% protein, it is free from sugar and starch and is suitable for baking. It can be used as a  chocolate substitute. An edible gum is extracted from the seed, a substitute for Gum Tragacanth
(see Astragalus species). A stabilizer and thickening agent, it is also used as an egg substitute.
The roasted seed is a coffee substitute.

Cross LOC Trade in Kashmir

10 kg cocaine recovered from cross LOC trade truck

While claiming that the Rs. 10 crore worth cocaine consignment, seized from a truck across the LoC Hizbul Mujahideen, the Jammu and Kashmir Police have arrested an alleged operative of the militant outfit from the capital city on Friday. in Baramulla district, had been smuggled in for

The North Kashmir Deputy Inspector General of Police J.P. Singh confirmed the Baramulla Police operation and told The Hindu that one Shehzad was picked up from Fruit Mandi area of Srinagar. “Driver of the seized truck Abdul Ahad of Mawar, Handwara, revealed during sustained questioning that the cocaine consignment was for Hizbul Mujahideen’s Shehzad. We got him to Srinagar to call Shehzad to Parimpora. As soon as Shehzad reached the given spot, we took him into custody”, DIG Singh said.

Mr. Singh claimed that Shehzad was an “overground militant operative closely linked to Hizbul Mujahideen’s top brass in Pakistan and Jammu and Kashmir”. “He admitted to being the importer of the cocaine consignment but maintained during the preliminary questioning that the contraband was supposed to be delivered to another operative whose particulars would be communicated by the organisation from Pakistan”, Mr. Singh said.

Case FIR number 47 under section 6 of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act has been registered at Police Station Sheri in Baramulla district. Shehzad’s antecedents and background could not be verified immediately from independent sources.

Nine packets of cocaine, each weighing one kilo and valued at Rs. 10 crore in international drug markets, had been seized from a cross-LoC trade truck earlier on Friday. Entire fleet of the trucks that had gone across the LoC to the Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir’s Trade Facilitation Centre at Chakoti to deliver goods on Thursday, was intercepted and thoroughly checked at a barricade on Baramulla-Uri Road on Friday.

The DIG said police had received information about the possibility of smuggling of drugs and arms through three particular trucks. He said that the contraband was seized from a truck bearing registration number JK02F-0127. It had been concealed in a tyre in the tool box of the vehicle that had carried a load of bananas from Srinagar to Chakoti.

The barter trade of over two dozen listed items operates for four days a week through Uri in Baramulla district of Kashmir valley and Chakan-Da-Bagh in Poonch district of Jammu. As a significant feature of the confidence building measures between India and Pakistan, the cross-LoC trade has been in operation since October 21, 2008. Cross-LoC travel had been resumed after 57 years in April 2005.

While as the PoK government has set up the TFC at Chakoti for delivery of the goods imported from Srinagar, the J&K government has a similar facility at Salambad, short of the Aman Sethu bridge, the zero-line on LoC in Uri. Goods imported from Muzaffarabad are delivered there for trans-shipment to Srinagar and Baramulla.

Even as some prohibited items, including rounds of ammunition and Pakistani SIM cards have been recovered from some vehicles and passengers in Jammu, it is for the first time in the last five years of the cross-LoC trade that a sizable quantity of cocaine has been allegedly smuggled in and seized.

Attack On 'Dr. Sheikh Jalal' Inhuman

Sir Dr. Sheikh JALAL
By: ABUL HAQ
Forces of terror are raising their ugly head in the Kashmir valley all over again; however there has been a major shift in their strategy. Militants no longer go after poor villagers of remote areas; they have little use of such people since only a mass scale operation in rural areas creates the desired impact and such an operation has become difficult in view of the reduced strength of their groups, their limited personal capability and the enhanced vigilance of the people. What militants now look for is lucrative targets in urban areas; a police post that is thinly guarded and an eminent personality are considered to be the most rewarding hits.

It is against this backdrop that the strike on the eminent cardiologist and former Director SKIMS, Dr Sheikh Jalal-ud-din has to be seen. The Doctor is a respected member of the Kashmiri society, known for the years of self less service that he has rendered to the state, his community and humanity in general. Like other intellectuals of his calibre he also would have been quite lax so far as his security is concerned considering it to be an unnecessary appendage; after all, who would want to kill a person who has only saved lives and not harmed even a fly. The good doctor has for many long years of his life remained cocooned within the folds of his noble profession; he had no enemies to be afraid of. It is these very qualities of the doctor that converted him into a prime target for the evil forces.

A few days of reconnaissance would have created the opportunity to go for the attack, the militant were quite certain that an escape route was easily available. It is the escape route that is most important for the modern militant who values his life more than anything else. If this was not the case he would go for a fidayeen attack on some military post or some big well guarded political leader, but that would have meant certain death. Going for a soft, harmless target like Dr Jalal-ud-din fulfilled his sadistic impulses and personal security requirements; above all, the necessary impact would be there for all to see and the security forces would be seen as incapable and inefficient.

It was sheer providence that Dr Jalal-ud-Din Survived the attack even though his two security guards were not as lucky. It would be difficult to ascertain the complete sequence of events but it can be said with a reasonable amount of certainty that the brave policemen performed their duty to the hilt and managed to keep their charge relatively safe while taking the brunt of the attack on themselves. Thus the evil plan of the militants got thwarted What is most distressing is that the militant cadre has lost the very religious sanctity on the basis of which they launched their so-called Jihad in the Kashmir valley. Why otherwise would they attack another Muslim old enough to be their father in the holy month of Ramadan? Would Dr Jalal have expected in his wildest dreams that something like this would happen to him at this point in time? What enmity did these killers have with the person of Dr Sheikh
Jalal and why in the process did they take the lives of two innocent soldiers? The conclusion that can be drawn from this unfortunate incident is that the militant movement in Jammu and Kashmir has completely lost out on its religious and ideological moorings and has become the den of common criminals bent upon creating mayhem with the demented view that they would be able to brow beat the State, its people and the security forces into submission. In other words, they carry a wholly warped view of their importance and capability. The only solution is to hunt down these rats as soon as possible and rid the region from the menace once and for all. One small step taken in unison would produce the desired results.

One would like to bid a speedy recovery to Dr Jalal-ud-din as would millions of others, the entire sadistic and irreligious incident only goes to prove that God Almighty stands by his own.

Millitants kill 12 in Kashmir

Srinagar, September 26:
Millitants  from Pakistan killed six policemen, four soldiers and two civilians in an audacious attack Thursday in Jammu and Kashmir. Resisting BJP's calls, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said he will go ahead with peace talks with Pakistan in New York.

Three days before Manmohan Singh and his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif were to meet, heavily armed men first barged into a police station in Jammu region, killing eight people, and then drove off with a truck to attack an army base where they killed an officer and three soldiers.

Buy Medicinal seeds
It was one of the worst terror attacks in recent times in Jammu and Kashmir. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said the terrorists involved in the attack had sneaked into the state from Pakistan in the last 12 hours. He also hoped that the mayhem would not derail the India-Pakistan talks.

Three militants reached the Hira Nagar police station in Kathua district, located seven km from the Pakistan border, and attacked it with grenades and automatic weapons.

In no time, eight people lay dead: six policemen, a shopkeeper and the driver of a truck parked in the complex. Four others were hit, suffering critical splinter and bullet injuries.

The guerrillas escaped in the truck, drove on the Pathankot-Jammu highway and opened fire at Samba town.

Military sources said the militants then entered an army unit around 35 km from Jammu, killing Lt. Col. Bikramjeet Singh and three soldiers. Some soldiers were wounded.  In response, the military flew in commandos by helicopters to the attack site.

An incensed Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) immediately asked the government to axe the Manmohan-Sharif talks.

"The terrorists have attacked India almost at will," BJP president Rajnath Singh said. "The PM is in a hurry to start dialogue with Pakistan. There should be no talks with Pakistan unless there is a conducive environment."

His colleague and former foreign minister Yashwant Sinha said such "attacks always happen with the backing of Pakistan Army... Therefore, call off the bilateral talks".

In Washington, Manmohan Singh said that "such attacks will not deter us and will not succeed in derailing our efforts to find a resolution to all problems through a process of dialogue".

Conveying his condolences to the families of those killed, he said: "This is one more in a series of provocations and barbaric actions by the enemies of peace."

In an obvious reference to Pakistan, he said: "We are firmly resolved to combat and defeat the terrorist menace that continues to receive encouragement and reinforcement from across the border."
In Srinagar, Omar Abdullah said "it would be great injustice" if the India-Pakistan dialogue process got stalled following the terror attack in Jammu region.

He blamed the attack on "forces inimical to peace between India and Pakistan" and said it was aimed at derailing the Sep 29 meeting between Manmohan Singh and Sharif in New York.
He said it would be difficult to speculate if the attack had the backing of the new government in Pakistan.(IANS)

Insider’s info on Hyderpora attack can’t be ruled out: J&K Police

Dr. S.Jalal

Militants change strategy, carry out lethal attacks

“Security forces are investigating the possibility of insider’s information about the movement of an Army convoy that was attacked at Hyderpora in Srinagar last month in which eight Army personnel were killed and over a dozen were injured”, a senior police officer said here.

Militants chose an Army vehicle in the convoy with un-armed soldiers for the lethal attack on Hyderpora Bypass, a day before Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh visited Srinagar last month.

“We can’t rule out insider’s information about the particular vehicle of the convoy in which the Army men were without weapons. The attack was targeted at that vehicle only when there were up and down convoys plying on the highway. We are investigating various angles about what led to the targeting of that particular vehicle”, the officer said.

He added that militants have infiltrated into security forces ranks but police have been able to identify and nab them. The officer cited the example of Constable Abdul Rashid Shigan and Sub-Inspector Shiv Kumar Sharma alias Sonu who were working at the behest of the militants and were involved in the militancy related incidents in the State.

“We were able to identify and arrest them. We can’t rule out more infiltrations in police. Such infiltrations do take place in the security force ranks in conflict situations”, the officer said.

The officer said that militants in Kashmir have changed their strategy with the aim to inflict more casualties on security forces and in return incite them for collateral damage that could lead to public anger against the Government and street protests.

“Two police men were killed at point blank range in Hari Singh Street, Srinagar on June 22 in busy market place but we didn’t fire back as it could have caused civilian casualties”, the officer said.

The officer said that such type of provocative attacks where they were expecting collateral damage was Bemina attack on CRPF camp in March this year where children were playing cricket, Hyderpora attack on Army convoy, and attack on Dr. Sheikh Jalal in busy street at Pampore where two police men were killed and the doctor was critically wounded.

“The aim of these attacks at public places was to incite the security forces for collateral damage so as to incite people against the Government and trigger street protests”, the officer said. “But security forces didn’t fell prey to the militant designs and maintained utmost restraint during recent attacks on the security forces”, he added.

The officer said that soon after the attack on Army convoy in Hyderpora, Police directed the Army not to open fire. “We told the senior Army officers that there was no point to fire back as the militants had fled and the firing can only cause civilian casualty”, he added.

The officer said that this year there were more lethal attacks on the security forces in Kashmir valley in which casualty figure on security forces is higher than the previous years.

With the changing strategy of carrying out lethal attacks on security forces, so far 33 security men were killed in militant attacks since March this year. The biggest one being the Hyderpora attack of last month in which 8 Army personnel were killed and over a dozen injured.

Militants in most of these lethal attacks took security forces by surprise. In March 13 this year, 5 CRPF jawans were killed when militants attacked them at Bemina and most of the jawans were without weapons as they were on law and order duty.

In Hygam Sopore, militants on April 26 attacked a police party and killed four police men. The police party had gone to investigate a theft case which militants had faked.

In Tral on May 25, four Army men were killed when militants took them by surprise after trapping them in their drag net.

Ginkgo and Skin condition

HERB HELPS SKIN CONDITION

Up to two percent of the population has vitiligo, a difficult-to-treat skin disorder in which a loss of pigment-producing cells creates white patches on various parts of the body. A recent review of potential natural treatments for vitilago highlights a study using 40 mg of Ginkgo biloba, three times per day for six months. Of those taking ginkgo, disease progression was halted in 80%, and 40% experienced complete repigmentation, compared with only 8% in the placebo group. "Ginkgo’s apparent efficacy without the need for phototherapy – thus eliminating the adverse events inherent with phototherapy make sit a therapeutic option worth investigating," said the authors.

Cutivation of Ginkgo tree

Two recent studies support earlier research on the use of ginkgo for improving cognitive function, particularly in older people with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

Seniors with dementia scored better on memory tests and had other improvements. In the first, researchers from Ukraine enlisted 400 patients with dementia in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, 22-week study. They found that treatment with a gingko biloba extract (240 mg per day) to be associated with improvements in scores for a simple and short test for assessing cognitive impairment of memory and attention (SKT test) and neuropsychiatric symptoms. In addition, care giver distress scores were reduced significantly among care givers of patients in the ginkgo group, as compared to a worsening found among care givers of patients on the placebo. The researchers reported significant differences between the ginkgo and placebo groups in terms of apathy/indifference, anxiety, irritability/lability, depression/dysphoria,and sleep/nighttime behavior. They say the results suggest that supplementing with an extract of gingko biloba may benefit patients with dementia.

In a second study by German researchers, 404 patients with mild to moderate dementia (333 with Alzheimer’s disease and 71 with vascular dementia) supplemented with the same type and dose of gingko biloba extract for a period of 6 months. Similarly, the herb was found to improve cognitive functioning, non-cognitive symptoms, and functional abilities. Patients treated with the gingko had improvements on the SKT cognitive test battery as compared to deterioration or no change inpatients on placebo. Scores on the Neuropsychiatric Inventory (NPI) also improved in patients taking the supplement, compared to either a slight deterioration or only slight improvement in placebo patients. The researchers say that supplementation with gingko may be of benefit to patients with mild to moderate dementia due to either vascular dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.

Walnut plantation/Cultivation of Walnut

WALNUTS SLOW GROWTH OF PROSTATE CANCER

Research in mice by UC Davis shows that walnuts slow the growth of prostate cancer.
Mice fed a diet with walnuts had smaller, slower growing tumors, the researchers reported in the current issue of the British Journal of Nutrition.

A low-fat diet is often recommended for reducing the risk for developing or slowing growth of prostate cancer. However, the UC Davis study suggests that not eating walnuts may be a mistake.
Walnuts are rich in omega-3 polyunsaturated fats, antioxidants and other plant chemicals. Eschewing walnuts may mean foregoing the protective effects of walnuts on tumor growth.

One in six men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer, usually later in life. One in 36 will die from the disease because most tumors do not spread beyond the local site, according to the National Cancer Institute.

“Our findings suggest that eating a diet containing walnuts may slow prostate tumor growth so that the tumor remains inside the prostate capsule,” said Paul Davis, research nutritionist in the Department of Nutrition and researcher with the UC Davis Cancer Center. “If proven applicable in humans, men with prostate cancer could die of other causes — hopefully old age.”

The research was funded by the California Walnut Board, according to a UC Davis Cancer Center press release. Visit The Sacramento Bee (Sacramento, Calif.) at http://www.sacbee.com

e rediscovery of a different variety of seeds from diverse cultures is always an exciting development. Sabja, a type of Tulsi seeds, is well-known in Aryuvedic medicine. These are the seeds of sweet basil, also called Thai Holy Basil, which is different from holy basil, the tulsi plant revered in India.
Native to Asia, particularly Maharashtra in India, sweet basil has been used for thousands of years as a culinary and medicinal herb and is also known for its therapeutic benefits. The seeds resemble the South American Chia seeds and are tiny round black, become gelatinous when soaked in water for about an hour. They form a translucent gel like membrane around each seed, resembling frog eggs. They are used in drinks in Asian countries such as Thailand and desserts such as Arabic falooda or sherbet.
In the past, basil seeds were used to relieve indigestion, sore throat, constipation and diarrhoea. Few studies suggest that the fibre in the mucilaginous layer surrounding the seeds after soaking is responsible for its bilk-forming laxative effect.
Perhaps, the gelatinous texture and high soluble fibre (80 per cent) of the swollen basil seeds helps make a filling drink, which could help curb appetite if consumed before meals. Although research is still in the preliminary stage, basil seeds may help control blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes, according to Sutter Gould Medical Foundation. Keeping blood sugars stable in weight watchers has the potential to help reduce appetite and food cravings.
In Thailand, three published studies have described the use of sweet basil seeds in treating constipation, diabetes and lowering high cholesterol levels. Interestingly, basil seeds are served with sugar syrup during Muslim fasts, to replenish lost nutrients.
In Southeast Asian cuisine, these seeds are often combined with water, sugar, honey and sometimes coconut milk to create sweetened beverages, some of which could be thick with a consistency similar to tapioca. The traditional recipes are high in sugar, which can be replaced by an alternative sweetener to reduce sugar calories. Its distinct texture creates an interesting and nutritious addition to desserts and puddings. Soaked basil seeds can also be added to your favourite juice, tea or sprinkled on top of salads. But do remember to soak them in hot or cold water for about an hour before using. Children and elderly could choke on swollen seeds and should be discouraged from consuming them.
